I hope I’m wrong on this, but I don’t think Zibanejad is going to age gracefully as a player and remain productive into his mid-thirties. I think his production falls off a cliff halfway through this contract.
This should at least put Eichel to NYR to bed. But it doesn’t seem like Drury was able to get a discount on term or AAV.
Ugh. I feel like the chickens will come to roost eventually. But we'll need to be creative because there's no way we should sacrifice Laf, Kakko or Fox because of the money we have tied up in Kreider and Trouba. Panarin is obviously a keeper and shouldn't go anywhere.
I will repeat what I’ve said for years and what Larry followed up with:
Teams don’t fixate on salary 6 years down the line. A segment of fans do.
As for the deal itself, solid give and take by both sides. Rangers traded term for average, Zibanejad acquired security to stay in a place he has always supposedly loved.
It’s a gamble. But a manageable one.
The vast vast majority of players fall off a cliff in their mid 30's
Zibanejad is a good enough shooter that he might be productive as a goal scorer to some extent
I think paying him as a 1C but not elite 1C is about right. Fact is he has been an incredible goal scorer lately and huge offensive threat that the team needs as a 1C
People complaining about term...Guys no upcoming UFA is signing less than 7 years. These guys want financial stability, so please come back to reality. He wasn't going to sign a 5 year deal to make YOU happy.
This right here. Its
@bernmeister levels of unrealistic to expect these UFAs to accept less. Glad to have him locked up long term, amazing player.
His Fiance/wife has to be done with Med School soon right? Early retirement and stay at home husband could be a very nice option for him.
Is Strome a self rental this season?
Alright I guess, I was hoping for 4yrs x 7 mil
I’m not worried about the cap. They’ll find a way to keep who’s necessary
Clocks ticking on Kreider, he’ll be the first to get moved when the time comes. Which is why I see very little chance they name him captain
here are my comments
I wish it underscored how
@StaalsXpensiveCTDigs needs to be chided for consistently, I daresay knowingly, misquotes me selectively, out of context.
Yes, I only wanted Zib at 3-4 yrs, w/no NMC and ok or less tnc. For that privilege, I was willing to overpay him at 10.5 per. It would be short term stress but avoid long term crush and cover if Zib's production falls off a cliff then, either due to injury or age + wear + tear.
This is contrary to the inferred representation some are making that I simply wanted Zib to do less term without getting counterbalance reward for doing so.
So for those who deserve it --- and while I am specifically not naming names, you know who you are --- for being a horse's butt, bite me.
I am interested in seeing what nmc/ntc conditions are.
Barkov at 10 per was a blessing.
Had hoped if max term was employed, it would be closer to 8 or 8.25, but 8.5 is fine and not a problem.
The issue is not current cap.
The concern is 4-5 yrs from now and what flexibility will we have/not have.
Player produces and is worth the $, the issue is juggling so team can squeeze in most young talent = cheap quality depth for as long as possible within cap.

Kreider stays. While Kakko is starting to open eyes, thank God, Kreid is still our only dominant beast.
Trouba will go, Schneider establishes that. Hopefully Kreider, not Trouba is named captain, but that is not end of the world.
If my count is correct, Rangers can trade Trouba 3 seasons from now [incl. current one]. He'll be here this year. Robertson + Schneider max mins in the A. The ? is if instead of dealing him during that final year, he will relent and let it happen next season.
It is only somewhat noteworthy that he and the missus live in FL, which is to avoid state income tax. The eye opener is my understanding that the wife physically is employed in FL at present, not NY. I could be wrong on that but that is my understanding.
Trouba wanted his wife to be happy and have options.
Conceivably, there may have been a reason to have her med schooling up here. Now, post education into residency or whatever it is she is doing, I am guessing that an opportunity can be created for her wherever there is an acceptable med institution to partner for that. That could be NY, or it could be elsewhere including FL. I could see MSG making charitable donation 1m = tax write off to establish a fully funded position in FL, and if with TB, then like Stamkos + two 1sts for younger Trouba + 2 3rds. That deal would give Bolts instant half mil cap relief each year, and mitigate vs Stamkos is 3 full seasons.
Strome has to go yesterday
