This is just that scene in Family Guy where Peter, trying to get a free boat, wins a choice between a boat and a mystery box and takes the box in hopes of getting a boat.

Mike, we had the boat. No need for the mystery box. Zetts fit the timeline and by all accounts wanted to be here. How do you build a team and a culture by punishing that?

I wonder if this is a combo of not wanting to pay zetterlund and opening a roster spot for a Musty/Graf/Halts for next year?

Of course, we could also turn around and flip some of these picks to move up in the draft as well.

I also wonder if this board loves zetts more than the regular fan/Gms in the league. wouldnt be the first time thats happened.

Opening a roster spot?! All we have are roster spots, half our players are replacement level.

Ostapchuk is not a nothing player. He's going to have a long career as the type of bottom six forward you can win with.

We all love Zetts but he's just not that valuable as a pending arb eligible RFA. His PDO is on the moon this year and the Sharks clearly made the determination that cashing in now would yield a better return than signing him to a 4M+ AAV deal and trading him down the line. Either way he's a bit too old to be a long term piece here especially with Graf proving he's a NHLer and Chernyshov looking like he'll be a better version of Zetterlund relatively soon.
What makes you thinking Ostapchuk is a "forward you can win with" other than his f***ing height?

As I've said, I wouldn't have a problem trading Zetterlund if it were for an actual return that made sense. This return is garbage and probably ends up with maybe a 4th line winger who is okay for a couple years before he's quietly let go.

I think you're right and I'd throw Chernyshov in there as someone who could step into the NHL with a strong offseason/TC.

Is 50 points really "top 6 scoing" in today's scoring environment

I like Zetterlund a lot and think he's useful but on a good team he's a 3rd line scorer that can fill in higher in the lineup in case of injury

I wanted to keep him, but I can understand Mike being apprehensive if he was asking for like $7M a season
This year: 125th in points, 150th in points per game among forwards with >20 GP.

Last 2 years: 126th in points, 166th in points per game among forwards with >20 GP.

And if you look at just 5v5 numbers, he's 69th in points (leading our team) this year, and 133rd in points the last 2 years. This is with only 7 secondary assists which is very low compared to his peers.

With 186 top-6 forwards in the NHL these are comfortably top-6 scoring rates.

yeah i knew i was missing a name or two. just threw the list together quickly. But yea if you have guys coming up who need top 6/9 minutes you want to slot them into where they can be successful.

1. The cap is about to explode. You could easily hand Zetterlund $7Mx7 and in three years that'll be average middle-six winger money.

2. We have plenty of room for prospects without moving Zetterlund.

I can't wait to hear what Mike has to say about this shit.

He is, but he's not Bedard/Fantilli/Carlsson. I love Smith but I would trade him for any of those guys in a heartbeat.
Idk about that, Smith's last 6 weeks have been a stronger stretch than anything they've shown in the last 2 years

It's also just about locker room morale, but he's gonna definitely continue to be a fan favorite wherever he goes

I feel like zetterlund is closer to classic 3x3 than he was to a 5x5 kinda guy. I could see some apprehension there.

I think value is okay but totally anti vibe

The only thing I can see is that, A. They didn’t like Zetts deal or he wanted out, B. They really want to cement a 3C behind Celebrini and Smith and see Ostapchuk as having that potential.

But boy, surely there are better guys out there…

Come on dude, this is an insanely overconfident statement re:Ostapchuk. None of us know very much about him besides the fact that he is big and his production is god awful.

Agree with everything else you're saying about Zetterlund - I wanted to trade him - but this is a shitty return and I'd rather have waited until the offseason if this was all we could get.

Only options I can think of as to why this happened:

A.) Grier was NOT a fan of how rosey Zetterlund cheeks got time and time again

Or

B.) Zetterlund must have been asking for too much or gave an indication he wouldn't stay long-term

He's reportedly a strong skater for his size and has a solid track record of AHL production at a young age. Early 2nd round pick, played for Team Canada at the World Juniors, definitely not a nothing prospect.

Cheryshov is at least two years aways and will be lucky to have Zetterburg's production in his first few NHL seasons. I hope GMMG isn's penciling him in watching his highlights dunking on 17 yr olds in the OHL. Graf made huge strides to make the NHL team but he is hardly someone that can play top line minuets. Zetterberg was also a player in that just older age group than the stars to come and would bring some continuity to the team. The other moves has some purpose, this was stupid.

So shark fans get another summer with the rookie coach, new overpaid below average players to make the salary floor, historically bad defense, and watch another 0-10 start..... how many more 5+ losing streaks... but be patient and watch them draft McKenna! yey

It's possible they think the same and are planning on potentially icing those guys, giving a top 6 of Celebrini, Smith, Eklund, Merkly, Chernyshov, and Graf or someone they plan to pickup this summer, or whomever they draft in the top 3. Problem is they will need to spend some salary, and with dumping almost everyone who needed to be re-signed... lol. Either way, I think something had to be going on with re-signing Zetterlund even if that was just a piece of the puzzle.

He also has a 1.048 PDO as a grinder who doesn't drive play, he's dependent on his linemates to create the offense that he's effective at finishing and is getting great puck-luck

I don't think Zetterlund is the driving force behind his point scoring, he's a talented complimentary plug-and-play guy but I don't think of him as an automatic top-6 guy, it makes sense for the front office to put a ceiling on the salary they're willing to offer to him
