If it came down to TO vs Van for Zardorov who has what is would take to make the deal, the best offer.

Now rememeber Big Z contract expires this season.

Both clubs will have cap issues next year too

Presently TO looks to be the solid club making the playoffs for a few years in a row.

Vancouver has Demko.

Calgary needs a fit for Huberdeau and good defence prospects

The Canucks could offer Garland, a 50pt player with retention of 1.5 mil a year with 3 years left on his deal. Include one of three "AA" D prospects and add a later round draft pick, they do have more to offer than TO.

TO's cap issues may come down to choosing between Nylander and Marner and Nylander does play center and would fit nicely with Huberdeau. TO's cap issues may be worse than the Canucks due to clause contracts. Other than Nylander they could offer up injured Liljegren and Timmins but that would hurt their depth. And Nylander is worth too much more than just Zardorov, Calgary would have to add.

Could be a block buster though.
Zardorov, Markstrom/Vladar and for Nylander, if they can get him to waive his clause, Jones and Timmins/? with a pick or a 3 way deal of some sort.

TO still needs a goalie so maybe they go in that direction first. Klinberg for Zardorov? Both expiring at the end of the year but Klinberg also had a clause.

Fun to imagine Zardorov dressing for TO or Vancouver tonight. :D

I wonder if Garland at 3.5 mil, a 50 point player not playing PP time, might entice Calgary? He might wake up Huberdeau's game some, he would certainly add to scoring.
Garland is closer to 5 mil.

Bruins need this guy and probably going the other way need to be Grzelcyk +
He has Bruin written all over him, he would also get a instant raise coming to the states. I doubt Calgary would just take Gryz ,probably needs a sweetener not too sweet though.

Wouldn't suprise me if he was traded to Boston for another UFA Matt Grzelcyk if the Flames could convince Grz to sign an extension there. Grz is a very good regular season player but really struggles in the playoffs, I think Z would do very well in Boston's system.

I would be shocked if we added a player like Grzelcyk. That is the exact kind of player we don't want to bring in.

Something about US taxes being way less than those in Canada. :thumbu:
What about being paid in US dollars while living in Canada and other tax exemptions available to professional athletes? It would be interesting to see the real comparisons. Cost of living, housing, etc... Unfortunately we'll never see the exact numbers.

Ah. What's the difference between Mass/US and Alberta/CAN given his salary?

Something about US taxes being way less than those in Canada. :thumbu:

Combined tax rate in Alberta for Zadarov is roughly 48%. In Massachusetts, it's roughly 42% depending on how he files. Given how expensive Boston is compared to Calgary, the rate of exchange on the dollars, and how a bonus-laden contract can easily work around tax implications, a move to Boston is definitely not guaranteed to pocket him more money.

I don't want him on the Leafs because I think he is another 3rd pairing D and they have enough... but if we got him, I'd love to see a couple of shifts of McCabe/Zadorov... would be people flying everywhere... has to be two of the top open ice hitters (struggling to think of too many more)
It'd last a couple of shifts for sure because McCabe will get injured again.

Perhaps, but he could be easily moved if they so chose.

I don't like the idea of moving one guy for another guy you want to trade. I can't see any reason he would get more than Zadorov so why not just trade Zadorov for the pieces we want?

The problem is, that if BOS wants Zadorov they have to move Gryz for picks to be able to add Zadorov's salary. That means they are trading Gryz to a team that is looking for D while giving up picks.

So then the question becomes... why wouldn't that team just deal picks themselves to CGY for Zadorov? I would think most contenders looking to deal futures for a D for the playoffs would prefer the Zadorov type (rightly or wrongly)... which is why BOS would want to make the swap themselves.

Z is flawed but I think people dismissing him as a rum dum third pairing tough guy are selling him way way short. He’s huge, can skate, annihilate fools and has some tools even if the production has never aligned or the physical ability comes with some mental gaffes.

He checks a lot of the boxes that GMs are willing to pay a lot for as a deadline rental.

This will cost more than your UFA depth forward and a 3rd or rando uninspiring prospect.

Z will be highly coveted even if you think he’s overrated.

Oh my God, THANK YOU!

It fascinates me how little so many people seem to know about comparative economics aside from “taxes”.

Zadorov has Leafs overpay written all over it.

They already overpaid Reaves to solve their “toughness” problems. They’ll now take another shot at Zadorov.

Actually not that surprising. He wants to get paid on a longterm deal which it doesn't seem like the Flames are willing to offer

Oh well. After a game like tonight, his value should be pretty high

Can your trade value be high when you’re playing for a dumpster fire of a team and have requested a trade?

If I’m another GM, I’m lowballing.
