Yup, I like him as a player and seems like a good person. But you don't lock up term and money with a player like Zadorov. Spend it on Hanifin.
Whoever signs Zadorov is going to regret it. He is great as a #4/5. He also looks great on the highlight reel. However, he really is not suited for a full time top 4 position. Even at 4 years by 5 million, he becomes an anchor quickly.

He is not #4 and 5 mills is crazy. He is bottom pairing D that gets an overpay for intangibles.

For the Leafs to get Zadorov, they would need to dump cap like Klingberg. And to dump Klingberg will cost the Leaf assets in the form of sweeteners. So it would require the cost to get Zadorov + the cost to dump Klingberg. Totally not worth it.

I think his value depends on how things go in Winnipeg and Washington. If Dillon and/or Edmundson become available, the supply in that market segment will push the price down.

Except for every big hit, he is woefully out of position on twice the number of plays. He's a high risk, high reward player -- no doubt. I just don't see how his rewards outweigh the risks, unless he's paired with a really good partner.
Yeah, he will be the next Tyler Myers if he gets a big contract. There is a small chance he puts it all together but every time he has moved up because of injuries he has been over his head. Totally the type of Dman I'd over pay for a run if I thought my team was close though

This season? Have you watched them both this season? Zadorov looks like a top pairing defenseman this year. He's been our best player. It's why he's pissed about ice time.
lol no he doesn't

It has to be. Toronto is dollars in and out. They would need to dump a Dman in a trade they got one as well. They aren't moving Rielly or Brodie if I had to guess, neither are they moving McCabe who they paid a first for his contract.

So then the options are Gio (not happening mostly because he is old and is finishing his career here), Lilly (makes too little money to make it work and is also the future of our defense behind Rielly), or Klinger.

Klinger out, Zadorov in, picks and prospects make up the differences.

Could see something like Klingberg + 3rd + Hirvonen/Holmberg/Steeves for Zadorov + contract
Hirvonen/Holmberg/Steeves is just garbage low-value prospects. It would cost a 2nd just to dump Klingberg. So assuming Klingberg is included:

2nd + Klingberg + ??? for Zadorov. What is the ???

Zadorov isn't very good himself. We want him because he is physical but our fans will bitch about him all the time. He'll play like 13 minutes a night for us and hit and do small things for a higher cost than Schenn did for us who already proved to work in the role.

If people think Zadorov is getting a first or something that is nuts. Maybe Brad is that bad of a GM if he considers that.

I agree with you that its nuts to equate Zadorov to a 1st. But its also nuts to think adding Klingberg tot he deal would not incur a sweetener to dump him.

Also nuts to think anyone would put value on Hirvonen/Holmberg/Steeves. They are dime-a-dozen prospects that teams are chaulk full of.

Toronto doesn't have a second round pick in 2024, 2025, or 2026.

We're fairly pick-starved in the early rounds, unfortunately.

People say this and then every year the Leafs trade prospects in these deals and then suddenly they traded some great prospect and the rest are trash.

Leafs have lots of good prospects those were just ideas. Certainly not getting a Cowan or Minten or someone like Knies or Robertson for a rental

They really aren't. Klingberg will take a 2nd to dump. Zadarov will get more than a 3rd and meh prospect

No he won't. He expires at the end of the year. I would rather keep him than pay a 2nd to dump cap. Some team will take him to make a deal work we are already paying value in.

That's not true at all. Its hyperbole.

Its the Bracco effect that Leaf fans can't escape. A belief that your trash prospects are made of gold because you view them through rose colored glasses.

No one wants a Hirvonen/Steeves etc. Those are trash prospects and you know it.

And he was the best defencemen end of season last year on the Flames. His pro’s are way higher than his con’s. Under rated.

Keeping him hurts the team. He's not a NHL player anymore. You're dreaming if you think a team takes him for free.

Underrated. Passionate. It'll be sad seeing him go. This team is in a messy spot. Trying to keep players who don't want to be here. This guy loves Calgary and is much better than most people who don't watch every game of the Flames think.

Wherever he lands, I wish him well.
