Waived: Zadina (Clears) - Contract Terminated, Signs with SJS

Failure to report would terminate the deal and he could become a UFA. Clean slate for all involved.

Contracts can be terminated by mutual agreement, he doesn't need to wait until the beginning of the season. He has to clear unconditional waivers first.

He's walking away from $2.7M, since he'll get bought out anyways.... but yeah huge risk for him. If he manages to hang on for 3 seasons at $900k, then he'll break even.

It's insane to me to think that he believes he's going to do better than that deal, but to each his own, I guess.
I don't know if he thinks that he will get a better deal, because that would be insane.

I assumed he's realized that contract is keeping him from getting a job on a different NHL team so he's starting from scratch. Which is slightly less crazy I guess?

My thinking is that Zadina sees a "better deal" as one where can sign for cheap and bounce around the league on waivers and also gives him a "European Out Clause" so he can go back home if he ends up clearing waivers and isn't on an NHL roster anymore.

Pretty wild gamble to walk away from a guaranteed $2.74M (considering he's a likely buyout next summer) to just do whatever the Wings ask for the next season before he gets to be a 24YO reclamation project UFA next summer.

I don't see him ever being more than a 20 goal scorer max. And that's his ceiling. I doubt that unless he goes to some complete dumpster fire team where he gets PP1 time...

That's kind of fair move just to play hockey. Can't blaim the guy, sometimes there's more important things than money on the play.

The only way he manages to stay in the league is if he can ride Vrana's coattail (or a similar player he clicks with). I doubt he scores 20 even with PP time because he keeps whiffing on slappers. He never adjusted his timing from junior speed to NHL speed passes.

Well, with Erne, Cholo and Zadina gone, Stevie finally got rid of the AHLers, aside from Lindstrom. Maybe Joey as well. I have a hard time rooting for Joey after his foot stomp move.

I think we all agree this team still needs a scoring winger, I'm hoping for Tank on a one year contract.

To be honest, that is a pretty bold move from Zadina.

He knows he can't make the red wings now. He knows his contract makes him unmovable. So he is saying. Its fine, I'm not greedy, I just want to earn my way onto a hockey team.
He wants a legit chance on a new team.
Good for him...

He hasn't thought this through though... what teams are WEAKER than Detroit??

Not many. Someone will give him league minimum and a 2-way deal for sure.
Anaheim, Montreal, Chicago??

I am not sure if he will ever make the NHL at all at this point. But I can say this, him turning down that money to try..

Thats a bold move cotton!

But...he'd be paid more by reporting to Grand Rapids.

Filip Zadina Contract, Cap Hit, Salary and Stats - CapFriendly - NHL Salary Caps

Minors salary of $915k.

If he's on a league minimum 2-way contract is $750k now? So his minors salary would be half of that.

I am not sure you understood my post.

I am saying he Is willing to give up millions, and sign a HORRIBLE deal with a BAD team (there are only a few worse than us)... Because he thinks a change of scenery is better than going to GR.

He absolutely is throwing money away..

Thats what I mean by BOLD. :)

Can never say that Zadina isn't willing to bet on himself. Unfortunately, this situation has even more potential to come back and bite him than 'fill their net with pucks' did. Pretty dumb move IMO. Athletes have extremely limited prime years to make their money in the first place. Throwing away what could potentially be the biggest contract he'll ever get could have big repercussions on his financial future.

Pretty much this.

I'd take those 30min bus trips in Switzerland rather than 10h travel between AHL cities.
I would take the 10h bus rides for two years along with the several million more I would make in the NHL vs the Swiss league. Then go play in the Swiss league after that.

I'd put the chances at damn near zero that he doesn't regret this decision if his bet on himself doesn't pay off.

Sure, if money is the only factor in life.

But you won't get the chance to get NHL contract and continue at NHL by air travellling.

I wonder why are you people so against Zadina, whatever he does on his decisions?

This a favor for our team. A BIG POSITIVE. We should be happy. We move on. But keep bashing now about his personal decisions, and before it was bashing about being a shit player.

So f***ing what if he is losing money and betting against himself ? He has all right to do so, and we should respect him about his personal decisions. And not keep bashing.

It's definitely not the only factor, but it's not an insignificant one either.

Like I mentioned in another comment, these guys only have limited time to make their money. The worst case scenario here is obvious. Zadina signs a 1yr league min contract, shows more of the same, and doesn't get another NHL contract afterwards. Then he goes to Europe with $3M dollars less than he would have, and finishes his playing career without all of that money. Then 40 year old Zadina regrets making that decision because his playing days are behind him and he'll never be able to make that kind of money again. Just saying it's a massive risk. And we're not talking about sending him to the gulag here lmao, just playing in the 2nd-3rd best hockey league on the planet for a couple years.

But he's made his decision, hopefully it all turns out ok for him. Definitely going to sting quite a bit if by some miracle he does manage to break out though lol.

Don’t think this is a wise move for Zadina. Leaving money on the table that he might never make back (from the NHL anyways).

I can definitely see somebody taking a flyer at him for a league minimal contract, but he’s definitely not doing himself any favours by holding a mini temper tantrum.

I thought this would actually be the year for him to break out, but all that he is doing is creating even more unnecessary pressure for himself.

Hope he’s training hard this off season, because he’s sure as hell going to need more than some good luck to succeed next year…

That would be a monumentally dumb decision. He is going to show up wherever he gets sent. He's got $4.5M coming to him over the next couple years.
Guess I wasn't wrong about this despite the contact being back loaded. Bold move on his part.

I'd love to hear the 1 on 1 discussions with his agent. Wonder what that sounds like and who is pushing for what.
Agreed.

Maybe it took a break for him to arrive at this conclusion but if this has been going on you'd think the agent would've floated it before the trade deadline.

Also I just noticed the line under your username, lol! Good reference to a great movie that never got the attention it deserves.

This works out perfectly for the Red Wings.
I support Zadina’s decision completely !

Good luck on your PTO with Anaheim or Chicago…
