Definitely going to sting quite a bit if by some miracle he does manage to break out though lol.

Won't sting at all because that miracle wasn't going to happen in a Wings uniform. It would have been nice if Stevie had traded him for a second rounder last offseason, but Draper would have picked another NPDT benchwarmer with that pick.... so probably doesn't matter.

If anyone's gonna make Stevie regret a decision, it's more likely to be Yamamoto, not Zadina.

Me neither. I can respect it, but it's still monumentally stupid.

Lots of stupid decisions this offseason, lol. He basically bought himself out. At least we can end teh Zadina debate now.

I don't hate Zadina as a person, just don't like the way he plays and hated the contract. If he has the balls to terminate that contract then I wish him the best of luck. Not our problem now, no reason to hate.

somewhere around nothing
I just realized the pro scouts are:
- Maltby, a grinder
- Boyd Gordon a 4th line center who can't skate (former Cap)
- Chris, Stevie's brother
- Kyle MacKinnon, an AHL center

I think it's time to revamp that office, along with the NA amateur scouts
Exception of Maltby, those are the new hires.

Chrissy Y and Mackinnon was hired in 2019, Gordon was hired during the last season. New chief amateur scouts was hired in 2019 Wallin, and Rezmierski who left to Anaheim.

Other new scouts who were hired in 2019 are
- Rob Rassey, left in 2021
- Bryce Thoma
- Kevin Gibson, son of Kirk Gibson
- Phil Osaer, goalie scout & development coach
Two new scouts was hired in 2021
- Corey Crocker
- Greg Hawgood
Only scouts who are left from the previous regime are
- Brendan Flemming, hired in 2017
- Kelly Harper, hired in 2013
- Mark Mullen, hired in 2016
- Ross Yates, hired in 2018

Marty Stein was kept for few years but he was let go in 2021, he was originally hired in 1996.

So Yzerman has changed 50% of the amateur scouting staff and 75% of the pro scout staff.

Contracts can be terminated by mutual agreement, he doesn't need to wait until the beginning of the season. He has to clear unconditional waivers first.

He's walking away from $2.7M, since he'll get bought out anyways.... but yeah huge risk for him. If he manages to hang on for 3 seasons at $900k, then he'll break even.

The trebuchet didn't launch him very far with the weight of that contract holding him down!

I actually knew he revamped the NA scouts because I predicted he would when he picked mostly Euros in the first draft.

I'm just saying they suck. He needs to do a better job of hiring. Nepotism hire, a nobody, and Boyd freakin Gordon, who fell over more than Raz.

I guess I'm just still hating on Gordon the player, but none of them impress me. Gordon would skate with his knees locked up and fall over, lol. My nickname for him was Bambi (on Ice.)

Good riddance. Guy has done absolutely nothing but he's too good to go to the minors. What an ego. Glad we're getting the cap room back.

It sounds like Zadina will not report to the AHL which would terminate the contract but would Detroit automatically assign him to the AHL, or would that be something that would happen if he didn't make the team out of training camp?

It sounds like both parties are intending to just void the contract now and not worry about it.

Us geniuses officially expect a full apology from all the "give him time" people.
"Give him time" is vastly different from saying "he'll take off and you'll look like a big dummy!". For the record, I hated the Zadina pick. I wanted Dobson or any of the higher rated D-men that year. I was still willing to give it time after the first couple years which is not a bad approach when evaluating prospects in their early 20s.

I'd love to hear the 1 on 1 discussions with his agent. Wonder what that sounds like and who is pushing for what.

It is weird because the comments from Yzerman and Lalonde seemed genuinely pleased with his work ethic and effort to get back from the injury. I know a lot of that is just lip service, but he did look improved late in the season compared to the beginning of the season. I know that isn’t saying much, but the comments did feel honest to me.

We know Yzerman isn’t one to drag something out if it doesn’t work. You look at some of his moves in Tampa, how he handled Mantha, Vrana, etc. He didn’t give Zadina that contract on a whim because he was afraid of losing the player for nothing.

Why Zadina would feel the need NOW to become a problem child reveals quite a bit about how he handles adversity. If I’m Yzerman, he now becomes no different than any other locker room distraction. I don’t know how you allow him back in for camp even if he wanted in. He’s trying to call the shots and be given his role, that breeds poor relationships internally.

I mean it was becoming clear that Yzerman/the org (could be Chris) were looking to go balls deep into the overpaid veteran market. Why would he want to stay if the writing on the wall was that he would be sitting in the presser?

The rumors about Zadina’s availability via trade goes back to before the draft. He was making it onto the offseason trade rumor lists. He didn’t just now decide to request a trade because of free agency; this has been in the work for a while.

I don't think Yzerman/the org make it a secret what their plans are to their players.

$2.7M dollars? (That's assuming buyout next summer) I'll sit and watch some games for that kinda money. Does the team press box have beer? Preferably Guinness?

Stevie flat out said "a couple weeks prior to the draft", so that rumor is confirmed. Interesting read because it sounds like Stevie thinks he can still make the league. I don't see it, but we all know where I stand.

Still wish him the best of luck, he wasn't gonna improve in Detroit. He needs to find a linemate that he clicks with because he can't create plays on his own.

Like I said, I'm rooting for the kid. I eeally think we did him no favors and did a mind @#$% on him. He never fit the Blashill shit offense and they beat the 200 foot game into his head and even used it as bribery for ice time. That was NEVER his game. He was a pure shooting offence only player coming out and they f'd his mentality up so much you could see his ahole tighten up everytime he wanted to shoot. Someone brought up the hard squeeze on the stick, and I completely agree. He never seemed comfortable out there, just nervous he may make a mistake and lose ice time or be sent to GR.

Well, lets not even screw around with him now. Send him to GR and let him find his confidence and love for the game again. He is only 23 and how many 25, 26 year old guys have we given chances to? Let him play a lot of minutes at GR and then decide from there if he is fixable or not.
Sorry, but he’s now had 2 successive coaches that gave him a clean slate and he showed next to nothing. His stats were extremely pedestrian in Grand Rapids but was given a call up anyways. He was given PP time and given top line minutes as well. Yes, he had his injuries but never showed enough to justify much more patience and handholding. In spite of being overlapped by other prospects, he was given a generous 3 yr contract that the Wings hoped he could grow into. Best of luck to him, maybe he will get an invite to a camp and work his way up

I can understand the desire for a change of scenery, but with his confidence issues and vanishing scoring touch, I would have thought a stint on what looks to be a strong AHL team in need of a skilled winger would be a great opportunity for him to re-find his game.

Shocking to lose a 6th overall pick who looked OK in early viewings for nothing so early into their career. Hey ho

Weird choice for Filip to make. I don't think there are that many teams where he is a for sure in the lineup guy. Maybe 3-5 others teams and not like all those teams were necessarily waiting to add anyone, so even they might not have a spot for him. If he doesn't want the AHL for at least 900K a year for the next 2 seasons, how is Europe for less than that better?

I don’t think he cares at this point he wants out whether that means he’s in the same spot there as he is here. At least he’s get a fresh opportunity. Probably for the best of both parties to just move on. Even tho ill miss Z

Let’s think of it more like this. Let’s take Chad Smiley for instance who is currently a manager at Burger King. And now you’ve been demoted to head fry guy and you know you are getting fired next summer. You just going to sit around dunking fries for a year, or are you going to leave for a manager spot at McDonalds and prove you can make it as a fast food store manager?

There’s cuter girls in Europe than in Grand Rapids. He’ll be closer to home. A change of scenery. Besides, European players don’t view the AHL as having much prestige. It’s not all about the money.

To be fair, it’s more like being the manager at a high-end restaurant making very good money. They want to demote you to fry cook but you’ll still be making much more than you would anywhere else. Then you get offered a role as a manager at a lower end place, where you’ll be making less money than you do as a fry cook at your current employer, in the (let’s be honest here, dim) hopes you can get your way back to high-end manager.

Since when have teams and their players been able to "mutually agree to terminate a contract" with no penalty for the team or player and what prevents other players in different scenarios (injury, retirement, performance) from doing the same? I though all contracts in the NHL were guaranteed?
