As a Canucks fan who really doesn't like either team:

Nylander>>Zacha
Marincin>McLeod

Seems pretty terrible for the leafs

Marincin is the worst player in the deal AINEC. The gap between McLeod and Marincin is far bigger than the gap between Zacha and Nylander, so no from this Devils fan

Nylander was less than impressive in the AHL playoffs. Soft, no sense of urgency, he only looked good on the PP.

He was sick.

Also, because of his smooth style, any time Nylander's team loses or he doesn't rack up a bunch of points he's going to be ripped apart by some people for being "soft" and "no sense of urgency".

Towards the end of the playoffs, once he recovered from his illness, he was absolutely dominant. He had the hat trick game, but even in the next game where they were eliminated he was all over the place creating tons of chances. But, since he wasn't taking short strides and spinning his legs at 3000 RPM, people probably thought he was lazy that game too.

I'm surprised so many Leafs fans are against this deal. The way I see it Zacha and Nylander are about equivalent as prospects and McLeod >>> Marincin.

Ok, the Leafs has some good potential centers.
So do the Devs.

Why should either of us do this.

The only difference are the Leafs have the higher end C's

Hear me out on this one.

With Matthews, the Leafs have their future 1C locked up for the next 7+ years. I see Nylander as an offensive center who seems to find more success when he's the focal point of an offense, which he'll likely not get to be very often with all the talent in Toronto.

Why Toronto does this:
Zacha looks to be a very safe pick to be a solid two-way 2C who can play in all situations and provide a big shot on the power play. McLeod promises to be a solid 2 way 2C/3C with speed to burn. Having 2 big, speedy centers (who both have great games for wing too) with strong 2 way games who can carry the puck and chip in on offense like that would be the perfect fit behind / alongside Matthews and Kadri.

Toronto's forward group could look something like this by 2017-18:
JVR - Matthews - Marner
Kadri - Zacha - Soshnikov
Brown - McLeod - Bozak
Kapanen - Gauthier - Hyman

That is big, fast, and skilled down the middle (aside from goat, who's just big). Of course you have the option of moving Kadri / Bozak to C. Or you could trade one or both of them to pick up a top 4 D.

Why NJ does this:
This gives NJ the young playmaking center they've needed and adds a solid young defensive defenseman to help fill the hole left by Larsson's departure and give Santini more time to develop.

Hall - Henrique - Bennett
Cammalleri - Nylander - Palmieri
Boucher - Zajac - DSP
Kalinin - Fiddler - Josefson

That's 2 pretty good looking scoring lines with a solid 3rd line that can chip in as well. Having Nylander with 2 snipers like 'eri' brothers could be pretty fruitful.

Thoughts? Way off on value? Does it make sense for either side?

Leafs come out like bandits.

Most of it has to do with not needing to trade Nylander to begin with while the rest has something to do with having even fewer NHL-quality defensemen, especially for 17/18 like OP is suggesting.

If Marincin can carry the form he held in the second half of last season into this season (and by extension, into 17/18, as that is the earliest year in question), then the Leafs might as well hold onto him for that long and have another defenseman with experience rather than throwing in yet another rookie into the mix like Valiev, Loov, Dermott, or Nielsen.

And that's not even bringing up Mike McLeod getting decent ice time as a rookie in place of Kadri or Bozak or whoever on the third line (all of whom have NHL experience which, if the Leafs are in and around the playoff picture, would be nice to have).

It's just a trade that doesn't need to be done. That's why you have "so many Leafs fans" against the deal.

might have gotten Nylander for Larsson, huh

Yeah, exactly. I think we'll just keep Hall, then.

Because the OP is a Devils fan who hates all our prospects and wants them all gone.:shakehead

When that's your motivation, you usually don't come up with trade proposals other fans find rational.

The leafs are giving away the best 2 NHLers in this deal. Now in terms of value i'd probably say that new jersey is giving up slightly more but by a very slim margin. Now is that slim margin enough for the leafs to trade 2 NHLers for 2 prospects?

Absolutely not. Most will say that Marincin is the least valuable player in this deal, which i can agree with. However the leafs are extremely thin on the back end, and he was easily our best defensive defenseman to finish last season. He was starting to gain real confidence and followed that up with a solid performance at the world championships earning himself a top player selection for Slovakia.

Leafs win this deal.
Devils win this deal.

Nobody will ever agree on the value of their own here vs. the value of the other.
This proposal has had it's time.

Like that Kessel scrub who's too damn soft to ever win a damn thing in his entire life.

Nylander is coming off a big year, and Zacha is a full year younger. We won't know until we see how Zacha does during a full season of pro hockey

Fair point. He's a really good prospect that I'd love to have on my team...I just don't see him as MUCH better prospect than Zacha to justify trading Zacha AND McLeod for him.

It's a weird proposal that doesn't make sense to either team. IMO

against a struggling leafs team playing for 30th, and a goalie that couldnt stop a beachball.

it was 1 game....

Context is everything.

He was referring to the poster that said he looked "okay" in his one game. Which is completely false.
