Maybe from a strict "value" point of view, it's like getting two prospects for the price of one, but as nice as Zacha looks behind Matthews, it feels like the Leaf are shaving off quite a bit of top end potential in Nylander for more forward depth. And at this point in their rebuild, that isn't a direction they can afford to go in. I'd rather have a high end offensive center on the second line than a boring safe, big body, two way option (by your own description). Also, aren't the Devils grooming Zacha to be a LW?

He played center in his games with NJ last year. I think people are clinging to that idea because someone said he'd be a better winger in the NHL. Seems to be doing fine at center so far to me.

Some Leafs fans in this thread are completely drunk. This is an absolutely absurd price for the Devils to pay for anything.

Nylander has done nothing in his development path to suggest he's not capable of becoming a #1C, he's excelled in every league he's been in. He's clearly the best piece.

So to downgrade him to Zacha, a small but noticeable downgrade IMO. Just to pick up Mcleod? Depends on how high you are on him. I'm and apparently lots of others seem to not be high on him.

In short the Leafs are trading the guy who has the best chance at becoming a #1C out of the deal, to pick up a likely middle sixer. The Leafs have Kadri and Matthews to fill out the rest of the top 9. Where does Mcleod fit in?

The Leafs won't be trading William Nylander anytime soon. And if by some chance they did, it would be for an equally valuable asset on the blueline. Not other forwards.

I respect the OP's offer and attempt to provide value, but it's not a deal that makes sense for the Leafs right now.

From a pure value perspective in a vacuum maybe the trade favors the Leafs, but does not address our needs in any way.

Our biggest need right now is RHD, we aren't going to move top shelf assets for lesser pieces at the same position.

He was the highest on McLeod (by far) all season long. Had him at #3 for a while. While I don't agree with that whatsoever, he isn't just some random nobody.

Mcleod will prove better than #12 IMO. Around 6-8 in a re-draft.

Zacha will likely become a winger with Mcleod, Quenneville, Blandisi, Henrique, Zajac

Quality exceeds quantity. If we're going by upside, and to use an analogy you might comprehend, would you trade Erik Karlsson away because you've been offered Nick Leddy and Travis Hamonic?

It seems to me that value favors Leafs, but I don't think this deal works for them anyway. At the moment, Leafs are in a state of uncertainty. It's easy to talk about what pieces would be missing, or how a future lineup could look, but that misses a pretty important point:

We have absolutely no idea what Leafs a few years into the future needs.

The only major pieces that are established on this team is JVR, Kadri, Rielly and Gardiner. The rest is a question of prospects. That means that it would be stupid of the Leafs to trade just to win a bit value while they are trying to lay the rarest, most important pieces of the puzzle. What if Matthews doesn't give us all the offense he projects to? We might end up needing a duo of top centers, where the other piece is an extremely rare offense driver.

Until we have answered the central questions about this team, I don't see any of the central pieces move. Even for a value-wise good trade like this.
