Why would Columbus take a other forward over a defenseman coming back? Makes no sense whatsoever.
They most likely wouldn't.

If they accepted a deal from Dallas, and the centerpiece that we know of was Harley... not Robertson.. that tends to give you an idea of what kind of player the Blue Jackets are coveting in a return.

Harley, last I checked, is not a forward :naughty:
So, good luck winning a bidding war Toronto.

So NHL players get the highest % of their contract guaranteed,
No. NBA is fully guaranteed. NFL the guaranteed money is all that matters, so it’s kinda moot on whatever stupid number they make up for the cap.
the longest term,
for avg joe, not really.

For a higher caliber of player, it is way more of the norm (no one side has to though). This is a GOOD thing for teams though and something they push for— and bad for these higher caliber players. Covid made everyone forget that you used to be able to lock your stars up for 8 years (even more before they capped it) then the cap would rise while their hits stayed the same.
and by far the most easily accessible trade protection?
because of the longer length of contract. Which is my point. All of these factors lead to conversations where player says “Ok I’m committing to you for the better part of a decade and not chasing every cap increase. I will also trade some $$$ off my salary for a clause to ensure I can’t be dealt at a moments notice because I wouldn’t agree to this same contract if it was for X team and I’d want to hit FA. So I want to make sure you can’t trade me.” Which is very fair.

NHL also has a brutal RFA system. 7 yrs / 27 years old. NBA is 4 years. NFL is three (really 4 in practice). Neither are as restrictive. This artificially keeps salaries down as well.

Overall back to me refuting the tweet for its utter lack of context: the point is the NHL has designed a system to make it easier to keep star players long term and the norm has been for star players to sign long deals. Because of this the environment sets itself up for no trade clauses to be much more desirable/necessary than they would be in other pro sports leagues. So of course there are more.

If everyone stops giving out clauses I think the high end players that don’t need as much financial security are going to counter by taking very short, more expensive contracts that give them virtually the same amount of control as an NMC. And would fans like that?

You think Werenski said no to Dallas because they wanted Robertson? So decimate their D core with young wet behind the ears D prospects for the hope of scoring 10 goals and giving up 8?

I don’t know what the Leafs or Lightning can even offer that would come close to fair here.

Neither team has good assets.
None of that matters if he's only willing to go to 2 or 3 teams. Comlombus will just take the best offer from one of them

This is my head cannon.

Thomas Harley finds out he was trade fodder in this failed trade and demands to be traded.

Dallas caught in a quandary trades him to Columbus for Kirill Marchenko. But now they got room to sign Robertson.

So they sign Robertson to an 8X$14.

Then they flip Marchenko and Seguin to Toronto in exchange for a first. Seguin is a cap dump.

Toronto than trades Marchenko to Boston for Minten and their 1st round pick back.

Boston flips Marchenko to Detroit for Larkin.

Detroit then trades Marchenko to Toronto for Minten and their 2027 unprotected first.

Toronto trades Marchenko to Montreal for Hague and Montreal's 2027 first.

Finally Toronto flips Hague and a first plus Cowan to Columbus for Werenski.

If you take a look through the thread, the trade was around Harley. Werenski rejected because he wants to stay in the East. Besides that, he has never requested a trade so he may say no to any team.

This isn't the NBA

It's so funny how many people are ignoring the Dallas trade offer that Columbus accepted. It's literally the best way to gauge what Columbus is willing to accept.

What kind of dmen of Harley's caliber does Toronto have to offer? Hmm... nothing huh? That's a shame. But wait, let's just get Knies to roleplay himself as a defenseman and Toronto fans may be onto something!

Gotta say though, this whole Werenski situation is so bizarre.

You can't trade a Norris winning defenceman and get wingers in return. Knies, Cowan and crappy picks? Would be a horrible return. But this is Waddell we're talking about here.

This is confusing, what exactly is Werenski so mad about??

Dude wants out, Columbus tries to get him out and he’s pissed??? Lol

Sounds like he is actually content on not leaving, and that Columbus is demanding he waive his NMC to go to somewhere he doesn't want to go, so he's enforcing the trade protection he negotiated for.

Sounds to me that the narrative that Weresnki wants out actually isn't true

he never asked out, he just said he won't extend but will honor contract per report.

CBJ trying to trade him early and bec of leaks that made it sound like he asked out and fans are mad, he's pissed also. He doesn't want to leave unless it's to teams like TBL. within his rights. next year his NTC is reduced and CBJ will have more trade options. Cooler heads may prevail and they work out a trade still later.

Harley may look at it as a badge of honor that he is being talked about in the same breath as Werenski by being the main piece coming from Dallas. I don't think it's going to effect him one bit. If anything he plays stronger having more to prove.
