Using your protection from being traded to force a trade to 1 or 2 teams is what some would consider a dick move.
But isnt that pretty much the whole idea for that clause to exist.
I mean, not for being a dick, but its all about protecting your own destiny from your whole family being traded to wherever you actually dont want go. Thats literally the whole reason for the clause.
Thats why they want that clause in the contract, and actually using that negotiated clause is "sort of a dick move" just isnt right. Both sides knew what they were signing and if CBJ org didnt see this as an possible result for that clause then its really on them and not on Werenski. Im sure if Werenski actually played bad the first years of this contract CBJ would have not blinked an eye to find a way to get rid of him on any possible way with inside and out of the contractual clauses.
CBJ asked, Werenski gave an honest answer. He is not forcing a trade, just told them not likely signing back when current contract is done. I think thats respectable, tbh. Telling it early on so the org can do what they feel is best for them with that information. Information that for example Tavares or Marner havent given to their orgs, leaving them on a difficult spot and losing them for free.
Whatever happens between this and then, as long as it happens by the contract both parties signed, is now up to the org.
They can also decide to go all in for the next 2 years with their starplayers Werenski and Marchenko and try to win the cup, or they can try to max out the trade-value of those guys. And I actually think if they did the first thing and even had some success doing so, maybe you could re-consider signing back in two years if you are Werenski, no? Its not like Werenski hates it in Columbus. But the way they are handling their businesses is just not in the right place at now and where he is sitting it doesnt look very realistic to chase the Stanley Cup with the Blue Jackets for the remaining of his career, and if CBJ isnt going to fight back with it and instead just sell their stars thats another strong signal nothings gonna change anytime soon, so he prefers to see the options that are open for him when his contract runs out. Whats so "dick" about that.
GM's have been handing them out like who cares, and have gotten away with it for way too long. Whenever a GM trades a guy with a family to a bottom feeder team with highest taxes in the world or send some guys playing a bus-league AHL or buyout a player we all just go "well, thats their contractual right and its best for the team sooo.. should just have played better" , but when the players actually use their negotiated contractual rights to not go somewhere they dont want to its "phew, what a dick".
