has he officially even asked for a trade yet? for past few months journalists have been spamming that he "might" want to leave, even when he has not said anything. same with every star player in small or canadian markets...

he never asked out, he just said he won't extend but will honor contract per report.

CBJ trying to trade him early and bec of leaks that made it sound like he asked out and fans are mad, he's pissed also. He doesn't want to leave unless it's to teams like TBL. within his rights. next year his NTC is reduced and CBJ will have more trade options. Cooler heads may prevail and they work out a trade still later.
While it's well within his rights, what team would want to keep a star player around who doesn't want to be there and is only there because of a contract. Team isn't in a window and he's not getting any younger. Once he made it clear he wasn't extending he made it clear he didn't want to be there any more. This is a topic he should have breached next offseason, but having this hanging over the heads of the entire organization for two years is just selfish.

Already claiming you're not extending when your deal is up in two years and that you're there for contractual reasons only makes it clear you don't want to be there. It's just a cowardly way of asking for a trade while claiming they never actually did.

He's making the Tkachuks look respectable.

Werenski right now

In denial?
not at all, you lose Knies in that deal and would have putrid depth after Matthews/Nylander/JT/McKenna

Literally zero top 6 players after those 4. Better hope old man JT dont decline, McKenna is great out of the gate (most #1s aren't) and that Cowan makes a 35 point jump. So you got 3 sure fire top 6 forwards. not good. If Mckenna has a Hughes like learning curve you're screwed.

Supporting cast of Robo/Cowan/Domi/Groulx/Joshua is terrible. You would need to add 2 top 6 wings.

The Defense after Werenski/McCabe is one year wonder Raddysh/Washed Morgan/old injured Tanev/old OEL/Journeyman Stecher. Where does OEL and Morgan fit with Z and Raddysh taking their offensive minutes? But overall i like the defense.

The D really has the potential to be really solid if things go right, OEL doesn't decline, Tanev stays healthy, Raddysh plays at even 60% of what he did this season, and if Morgan is just okay.

Then we come to the goalies, Pretty bad.

so you got a good defense, high end stars, no depth and no goaltending. You're sneaking in the playoffs in the last week at best.

This is my head cannon.

Thomas Harley finds out he was trade fodder in this failed trade and demands to be traded.

Dallas caught in a quandary trades him to Columbus for Kirill Marchenko. But now they got room to sign Robertson.

So they sign Robertson to an 8X$14.

Then they flip Marchenko and Seguin to Toronto in exchange for a first. Seguin is a cap dump.

Toronto than trades Marchenko to Boston for Minten and their 1st round pick back.

Boston flips Marchenko to Detroit for Larkin.

Detroit then trades Marchenko to Toronto for Minten and their 2027 unprotected first.

Toronto trades Marchenko to Montreal for Hague and Montreal's 2027 first.

Finally Toronto flips Hague and a first plus Cowan to Columbus for Werenski.

Sounds like he is actually content on not leaving, and that Columbus is demanding he waive his NMC to go to somewhere he doesn't want to go, so he's enforcing the trade protection he negotiated for.

Sounds to me that the narrative that Weresnki wants out actually isn't true
If you're married and your wife says "I plan on leaving you in two years", do you really wanna stay in that marriage?

Legit question here but was it ever reported that Werenski specifically asked for a trade or just that he told Waddell he probably wasn’t going to extend at this time?

He never asked for a trade. Just that he wasn't going to re-sign.

Seems like a topic Waddell breached and not Werenski!

You can be happy with your current job but also not want to commit to staying there past 2 years …

Using your protection from being traded to force a trade to 1 or 2 teams is what some would consider a dick move.

But isnt that pretty much the whole idea for that clause to exist.

I mean, not for being a dick, but its all about protecting your own destiny from your whole family being traded to wherever you actually dont want go. Thats literally the whole reason for the clause.

Thats why they want that clause in the contract, and actually using that negotiated clause is "sort of a dick move" just isnt right. Both sides knew what they were signing and if CBJ org didnt see this as an possible result for that clause then its really on them and not on Werenski. Im sure if Werenski actually played bad the first years of this contract CBJ would have not blinked an eye to find a way to get rid of him on any possible way with inside and out of the contractual clauses.

CBJ asked, Werenski gave an honest answer. He is not forcing a trade, just told them not likely signing back when current contract is done. I think thats respectable, tbh. Telling it early on so the org can do what they feel is best for them with that information. Information that for example Tavares or Marner havent given to their orgs, leaving them on a difficult spot and losing them for free.

Whatever happens between this and then, as long as it happens by the contract both parties signed, is now up to the org. They can also decide to go all in for the next 2 years with their starplayers Werenski and Marchenko and try to win the cup, or they can try to max out the trade-value of those guys. And I actually think if they did the first thing and even had some success doing so, maybe you could re-consider signing back in two years if you are Werenski, no? Its not like Werenski hates it in Columbus. But the way they are handling their businesses is just not in the right place at now and where he is sitting it doesnt look very realistic to chase the Stanley Cup with the Blue Jackets for the remaining of his career, and if CBJ isnt going to fight back with it and instead just sell their stars thats another strong signal nothings gonna change anytime soon, so he prefers to see the options that are open for him when his contract runs out. Whats so "dick" about that.

GM's have been handing them out like who cares, and have gotten away with it for way too long. Whenever a GM trades a guy with a family to a bottom feeder team with highest taxes in the world or send some guys playing a bus-league AHL or buyout a player we all just go "well, thats their contractual right and its best for the team sooo.. should just have played better" , but when the players actually use their negotiated contractual rights to not go somewhere they dont want to its "phew, what a dick".
