A lot of people criticized me for saying I prefer him for our team than Taylor Hall. Now you see why.

Fan affiliation with players is complex. A lot of people like the shiny players. Years ago we had the Hemsky fans here calling Ryan Smyth a hack a way punter (Ryan Smyth with 36 goal seasons) People liked the flare of Hemsky and thought Smyth was along for the ride. Weird what people think on such things.

In this comparison Hall is the flashy marquee player. But Hyman is the player that does most to help your team bag wins and get the results. I go to war with a Smyth or Hyman, and I keep making that comparison. Its apt.

That said Hall could've been resurrected here, and I think he would be a solid team guy here, but hockey life has been kind of cruel to him.

Eating crow here as well. I compared his play last season to Kassian's on a contract year and expected him to mellow down.

I like him as a player type very much. He brings it every night. Hard to play against.
Compliments others who have more weaknesses, reminds a bit of the great Jere Lehtinen.
I don't think he is overpriced, term is long yes, but please guys we can worry that in 5-6 years from now. Let's be happy now because he elevates #97 game into new level and gives us better chance for the cup.

Have to add... he could play for Flames / Canucks too. :shakehead

Has impressed me so much more off the ice as well... what a likeable person. I can see why he was a fan favourite in Toronto. He is alot faster than I thought he would be and has a better shot and hockey IQ than I thought. Toronto's loss is surely our gain in this case.

I knew Hyman would bring a lot of what he has to this team in terms of effort and determination. I also thought he'd be a guy who could clean up a lot of garbage. But I have to admit he has been a lot better with the puck than I expected.

This is one of the things I appreciate most about Hyman. The effort was always outstanding but the play died on his stick when he was a rookie. He’s obviously put in a lot of work to improve his ability to carry the puck and it shows. He gets pigeon-holed as a great complementary player for an elite center, but the truth is he’s turned himself into a legit top 6 winger regardless of who he plays with.

After watching last night's game I was thinking about how mad some of us have been that Hyman doesn't always get to play with mcdavid. And I realized something: surely the major reason the coach has been switching up the top lines is just to throw opponents off their game plan. Think about how different it is to prepare for the oilers when you're preparing for 97-29 on the same line versus when they are spread out. It is a totally different team in many respects and I think tippett is a genius for doing it. Planning your line combinations as the opposing team has to be a nightmare, not knowing whether you will get the balanced or the top heavy oilers. Thank you Zack for making this a possibility!

Tippet said hed be running 97-29 at home and split on the road. Which makes sense when you have last change

I know he isn't Ryan Smyth. But I think in terms of drive, and what he brings to a locker room, he's kind of like Smyth and we desperately needed that.

And I think the Leafs are missing that!

Edit: I'll add that Smyth was 30 when we went to the finals and he had 6 years worth of top 6 play after that.

I'm so sad when you talk about Smyth-another reason to despise six rings.
Regardless...
I thought Hyman was a good energy and glue guy for Toronto but i was very leery of his bad knees at the time.
Now he Has brought closing, work ethic, enthusiasm, bleeds energy and leads with attitude and example.

Still somewhat worried about his knees after seeing him play.

I read up on his injury history. I might have missed some (I haven't found a great source for a complete injury history) but his injuries seemed relatively minor apart from a torn acl in one case. It doesnt seem like a bum knee like how Hemsky was out for the same shoulder all the time. Also I bet medical technology and other adaptations have advanced, even in recent years.

I definitely dont see evidence of weakness when hes skating. He seems like one of the better skaters on the team so far

I was happy the moment I read that we were looking at him. I knew he would be a 100% fit here. Get one more guy like that on this roster and we are pretty set.
