Player Discussion Zach Hyman

How’s he looked so far for you guys? Any chance he plays with McDavid like he did in the preseason?

He’s looked great. He’ll probably end up playing with McDavid again, I think Tippett is just looking to see how good the 2nd line can be and to “load up” the 1st for when at home and having last change. Personally, I’d prefer to have McDavid and Draisaitl centre their own lines again

He's referring to the fact that the Tavares contract prevents the leafs from keeping Hyman. The Leafs would be a better team with Hyman and another 5.5m player, than they are with Tavares.
I dont think there was ever a situation where we paid Hyman anything close to 5.5. He's just not worth it. Especially on term. Hes one of the
top players in the league for Taking hits. That doesnt age well.

But Tavares’ deal is going to age well? It’s already looking like a massive mistake simply because of what it did to the Leafs cap structure.

I guarantee Leaf fans would be arguing he's worth every penny if you had the cap to give him that deal.

I wouldn't say that. Were talking about different things. Hyman plays a style that means he won't be able to play much in about two years. You can't absorb triple the hits of most players and expect to have a lengthy career

There are also rumblings that we might only run Drai and McDavid at home with last change.

I guess it all depends how Hyman-Nuge-Yamo do. If they can produce some points there might be no reason to split up the top line

The fact we are talking about that now should concern prople
Yes but that doesnt mean he's going to be bad within a year or two. Hes basically guaranteed to play at his current level for a couple years. People love to think further ahead than they need to. Just look at the people last year who said the Oilers get bad marks for goaltending because of Smith's age.

I'm guessing that within 4 years, maybe 3, Hyman will take a step back but by then he can go to the bottom six and take on fewer minutes. We may have a couple bad years at the end that are like Neal. Or, he may be LTIR worthy. Or maybe we can trade him with a sweetener. Or maybe he will age well

Everyone knows that this was a win now move. We needed a few win now moves

That is logical but that doesnt mean it will happen. There are other factors such as the player himself. There have been players who have played physical into a long career. Some players absorb hits better than others. Not all hits are the same. Some players have better physical ability to take hits.

Based on what I've seen so far, I'm not seeing crushing hits on Hyman. I'm seeing tons of those little nudge hits along the boards when he fore checks.

Flyer fan living in Toronto here to see what's what with Hyman's situation.

So, Oilers have Draisaitl and McDavid together? I thought for sure Hyman would play with one of them, and prove his AAA+ value contract immediately. But if Zach helps power-up a 2nd line, well, it might be the right experiment. I gotta remember to tune into an Oiler game soon to see him, and how the new 1st line experiment is working too. Pretty big potential for good stuff.

Enjoy Zach!

This is a Bingo! comment. Leafs simply could not even dream of affording him, without making their top-heaviness even top-heavier, and exposing themselves to even more of the exact same risk.

So, here I go with a late-night NHL hockey game start...very very rare. All to see how the new Oilers function!

A revelation to this team. Has the potential to be Ryan Smyth of this era. Already making an untold impact to the psyche, attitude and swagger of this team.

As Tippett said he scores a lot of goals from the 1 inch line, but you need guys willing to go there. Oilers have desperately needed this type of player who goes to the dirty areas so consistently. PK/PP/5v5, every aspect of the game he touches we get better. SHG, GWG, PPG, 5v5 - he has scored every which way.

The 2nd goal he scored against Vegas was a beauty of a one timer earned through his zone entry and net drive.

I knew Hyman would bring a lot of what he has to this team in terms of effort and determination. I also thought he'd be a guy who could clean up a lot of garbage. But I have to admit he has been a lot better with the puck than I expected.
