Player Discussion Zach Hyman

Hey, Oilers! Leaf fan coming in peace! Zack Hyman seems to be amazing for you! Can you share if you guys like him? I really loved Hyman on the Leafs. He is a true fighter and you always know that he will give his best in all circumstances. Sometimes his hands turn to stone, but his grit is always there. All the best and cheers!

His hands aren’t so bad when you’re used to watching Alex Chiasson.

He came as advertised. Heart and Soul guy who gives it every shift.

Obviously the scoring pace won't keep up, and who knows how the back half of that deal will work, but right now he and Foegle are exactly what we were missing on our wings.

I grumbled to friends that even if Hyman ended up like McDavid's Kunitz, the term was too long. Instead he's looking even better than Kunitz did with Crosby IMHO. Legitimately making a case for being our third best player and looking like a bona fide 1st line winger every game so far.

Leafs fan here, I've been a huge Hyman fan ever since he started with us as you can see by my avatar, which I've used since he started with us. I wasn't sure that his absence would be this huge of a disaster in Leafland but now our first line of Matthews, Marner & Ritchie have 1 point combined in 5 games (2 for Matthews).

I've been a dye hard Leaf fan since 1976 but once Hyman went to the Oilers, now they are my second favorite, almost first. The Leafs are disgusting so far, picking up exactly where they left off in the last 3 games in the playoffs, just can't score anymore (and now they have JT back so that excuse is gone). And we've only played against cellar dwellars from last year (Habs? need I say more).

Hyman is a hard guy not to like. It sounded like his first choice was to stay in TO but the $ didn't work out for him and Dubas. Once that was past him he keyed in on Edmonton, he seems happy here and is playing very well for us. If things aren't going well for you guys, feel free to watch Hyman and drop by here and adopt us as your #2 team.

He just brings his lunch bucket and plays that all out heart and soul type of game that is quintessential Canadian style hockey.

He’s also a very impressive person off the ice. In his interviews he always comes across as intelligent, engaging, and a thoughtful person. His leadership skills and intangibles (which do matter a lot despite it being a meme on HF in regards to Toews) shine through when you hear him talk.

He reminds me of a better skating and more skilled Ryan Smyth in a lot of ways.

I knew Hyman would bring a lot of what he has to this team in terms of effort and determination. I also thought he'd be a guy who could clean up a lot of garbage. But I have to admit he has been a lot better with the puck than I expected.

I remember seeing this goal and being very impressed with it. He basically outmuscles and outworks Nurse and then bursts to the net and showed very good finish to boot. I think that overall he will be playing with more passers than with Marner and Matthews. Marner is a very good passer and playmaker while Matthews is more of a shoot first player. McDavid by nature is a pass first guy so Hyman should get a lot of primo chances playing with 97.

I have a strong feeling that Hyman was that missing piece that could bring the cup back to Edmonton, just like when we traded Kessel to the Pens (or even Bozak to the Blues). The Pens had it all (Crosby and Malkin) but could not get over that hump until they got Kessel from us, then won the Cup twice.

I'm not only going to be watching Hyman but if things keep going the way they are with the Leafs, I'll be jumping ship to Edmonton for a while. In Hymans first season, most Leaf fans thought he sucked and was slowing down the top line but I knew he was the reason that line was so good, that's why I chose him for my avatar.

We have had a very good start to the season but our question marks are currently 2RW, 3LD and in goal. Our 4th line could be doing better, but overall things are clicking nicely in spite of having so many new faces: Hyman, Foegele, Ryan, Perlini, Keith, Ceci and Bouchard (to a degree since he didn't play regularly last season). If the team stays healthy and could add at the deadline who knows just how far we might go. Connor and Leon have had to pull many corpses into the playoffs in the past, this time they have an actual supporting cast and guys that have had rough recent seasons in Koskinen, RNH and Kassian are now playing some damn good hockey. It's a fun time to be an Oilers fan.

I wish you guys all the best! I really think you deserve the Cup. If you win I will be really happy for all of you! :)

We accept Leaf turncoats here, feel free to join Western Canada’s team. We welcome all.

Also for the Leafs/Ontario fans lurking and posting here, the Oilers are tied with the most Canadian players on their roster at 17 and the most from Ontario with 11 in the NHL.

I didn't know this. That's dope!

They previewed in the broadcast yesterday that the Oilers and Knights were both the most Canadian teams in the league with 17 each. With the Knights being much more of a Western Canada type team. The Oilers have 11 players from Ontario.

How long before a Harold Ballard wants to trade teams again...

Fantastic how Hyman is doing here. He's that elite complementary topsix player that completes our lineup. With Jesse also becoming a star we have 5/6 topsix pieces in place. Hyman was always going to do very well here.

very glad he's on our side now. hyman's style changes the entire complexion of the oilers top 6

For so long when Mcdrai aren't together on a single line, the opposing team could give an oiler puck carrier space and double up on Mcdavid. With Hymans abilities in tight, he will make team's pay if they let him dangle in the corners.. Really adds a new element. Foegel looks like he could one day make these plays as well, so hopefully he soaks in the Hyman greatness.

We're Ryan Smyth country. Hyman was always going to work out gold here around the net. With the kind of elite help on the PP, and on first or 2nd line Hyman is going to be lighting the lamp a lot. People will be surprised maybe how much.

We were missing that solid front of net chaos bumper player. through the years we'd even auditioned lessers like Chiasson and Letestu in that spot. Finally we have the real thing. Hyman here is bad news for NHL opponents. He's the one tumbler that was left to crack in the combination safe lock. our PP is cheat code level now.

Agreed, except the bolded isn't just because of Hyman. It's even more because McDavid has a one-timer now which allows much more flexibility, and I think that's what has allowed Nuge for example to attempt many more cross-seam passes. The puck movement between Nuge, Drai, McDavid, and Barrie looks significantly improved which is saying a lot considering how good the PP has been the past few years.

Funny that the prototypical "outwork the opposition" team in Vegas happens to be more Western Canadian... the stereotype (which is a positive one imo) fits perfectly.
