The Leafs were very generous to the league and Zach Hyman, they let everyone talk to him weeks in advance of FA. They didn't have to do that. Usually if someone wants a player that is available on July 1st, they have to pay for the privilege and many don't end up signing. The Leafs already did both sides a solid. Now, Edmonton wants the Leafs to sign and trade to adjust the cap just right. Oh, but they'll only give up a 6th for walking them to the finish line. I think I would dig my heels in on this one. They used the Leafs, the Leafs should now be fairly compensated or they can deal with a higher AAV on a 7 year deal. The Leafs helped the Oilers and they want their help again. The first one was free, this time it'll cost ya.
Sadly Dubas doesn’t have the balls for tough negotiations

Exactly... Contract that came up before Covid were signed high expecting cap to go up to 90-100 mil in 2-3 years...

Contracts that are up last year and this year and next with a flat cap are getting less money and term. Its a huge deal.
Can you name other teams and players that are in as bad of cap hell because of recent contracts that anticipated a higher cap?
I don’t think there is a GM in the league that blew it as bad as Dubas

Here’s my guess for the compensation… 4th round pick this year.

Money talks at the end, not loyalty to a city or organization. It was the same with Marner and Matthews or Tavares and the same with Hymen.

Don't blame them at all by the way. Take as much as you can. All business.

But the don't pretend to be the hometown boy who only wanted to play here. But that's on the GM too

Dubas couldn't have predicted COVID-19.

But he consistently overvalues his players and his team.

And, he should have known Marner was never going to live up to 10.8 AAV. It was obvious at the time and the solution was to bridge. But he paid out overpay money

What? How? That was a narrative around here. One I believed in at one point, but never once did management insinuate that Zach would stay on the cheap

Zach Hyman is leaving the Maple Leafs, expected to sign in Edmonton shortly - The Athletic

The negotiations are over. Zach Hyman is leaving Toronto.

At the end of weeks of negotiations, the Maple Leafs simply weren’t able to approach a massive competing bid by the Edmonton Oilers for the 29-year-old winger, who has been in the Toronto organization since 2015.

Edmonton had been granted permission to talk terms with the pending unrestricted free agent before the opening of free agency next week. Hyman is expected to sign either a seven- or eight-year deal with the Oilers that will pay him between $5 million and $5.5 million a season.

That deal could get done as soon as Friday night, if a trade can be facilitated between the two teams.

“It wasn’t even close,” a source with knowledge of the negotiations said of the offers from the Leafs and Oilers.

The only remaining holdup to getting Hyman’s name on a contract with the Oilers is a negotiation over a sign-and-trade with the Leafs. Hyman can only sign an eight-year contract if his rights are then traded by the Leafs.

In return, Toronto would receive an asset — likely a low-level draft pick.

If that trade cannot be negotiated between Leafs GM Kyle Dubas and Oilers GM Ken Holland in the coming days, the Oilers will only be able to sign Hyman to a seven-year deal with a higher salary cap hit.

In either situation, the contract will be for approximately $40 million.

The one notable irony is that the some of the same posters who whined about overpaying are now whining that Dubas didn't sign Hyman to a $5.5 million on a long term deal.

This shit writes itself some days.
Many want that? Sounds exaggerated, I can't believe anyone does.

It clearly bothers you because you take the time to voice your frustrations with these people it's irking you isn't it eating away at you keeping you up at night stressing you out graying your hair don't let it get to you pal
No worries for me at all. This is a board where we express opinions.

For the record, if I had any hair left, it would be grey.

Good for Hyman... following the example set by Hyman, Marner and Matthews.

Good luck Dubas....gonna be hard to get any players with loyalty with the precedence set by the top players.

Also I'm unsure why he allowed teams to negotiate early with him, without them having to pay a draft pick if they signed him to ANY deal.. not just a sign and trade.
