You can’t teach what he did here. He gets plastered to the wall by a 6’3 Martin…and it takes him a moment or two to collect himself and get back up. He immediately rushes to where Dahlin is going to dump the puck knowing he has to battle for the puck with the dude who just smoked him. And the dude has a head start. No hesitation. He wins the puck and gets it to Mitts for the surprise shot and score.

You either have this mentality or you don’t. You can’t learn it. We’ve talked about how he plays without fear…and we see him rush to the front of the net to battle over and over…but this internal drive and fearlessness is a very special trait. Combined with his off the charts IQ, checking detail and pure skill…I mean…13th? Really?

Thank god he is small.

I think Joe Marino tweeted something like “Benson is closer to Bedard level than But is to Benson level” and he couched it as a bit of a winking statement…but I havent stopped thinking about it since.
