Well Brisebois took over a very good team that could not win it all, made some important tweaks and produced 2 winners. The nucleus was Yzerman's teams but don't overlook it was Brisebois that got them home.
Also if you look at Tampa's drafting record in the nine or so years Yzerman was GM it isn't very good. 2011 was a great draft but the last impact guy they drafted was in 2014 getting Point in the 3rd round. And signing guys like Stamkos and Hedman to great value contracts is much easier in a state with no income tax. He's a good GM but not as good as you make him out to be.

2011 got him a bunch of the core.
2014 got him the star C he needed to transition from Stamkos as the leader.

He traded Conacher for Bishop and then had the balls to jump in and grab Vasilevskiy before Bishop was done.
He missed on the Drouin pick and then played chicken with him and got Bargain Bin to give him Mikhail Sergachev for him.
He got McDonagh who was a huge part of this past Cup run for Namestnikov and a couple other prospects and picks, none of which have had anywhere close to the impact he has.

The Lightning were a 62 win team in 2019 as fully Yzerman's team. It is unbelievable the lengths some people will go to in an effort to diminish the effect of a guy. JBB has done a fabulous job keeping it together and making the moves to bring it along, but man, it's far easier to maintain a great team than it is to build one.

If anyone remembers Yzerman in the 80's his nickname was "Captain Choker", until all the studs and Bowman came aboard he had accomplished nothing except rack up points (one dimensional) and make Ysebaert look good at times on his wing.

I like how "new" fans only read the revised history of Yzerman.

People are acting like the Canes traded a perennial Vezina candidate. It may come back to bite them but why not wait until it happens before overreacting?
Well he is a perennial Vezina Candidate.. So is any goaltender that plays in the NHL.. :) I Hate the move as a Carolina fan but obviously the staff doesn't see him in that vein..

Simply put, the Canes gave up on a goalie with a bright future, simply because they didn't want to pay him an extra 1m-1.5m. Look if Ned had demanded a ridiculous salary/term etc... I'd agree with you but the kid wanted an extra mil!!! lol The pro's far outweigh the con's of taking a chance on him in this situation. They had already spent a lot of time developing him in their farm system. I'm sure if your team did this, you would also be upset over it.
Did stevie draft him? Curious if they have history?

Fleeced?

Maybe let's wait to see how Nedelkjovic does playing for Detroit instead of playing behind a ridiculously good Carolina team before we call it getting "fleeced", no?

Nedelkjovic let in a bunch of softie stinkers in that Tampa Bay series. I'm not convinced he's going to be this great starter moving forward.
Guessing the OP would have said Toronto fleeced Boston for Raycroft the day after that trade was made too.

Did stevie draft him? Curious if they have history?
Did he ever work for the Hurricanes?

It's a bad look for the Canes however you want to argue it. Giving up on a goalie with a solid first season simply because you don't want to pony up an extra 1.5m over 2 seasons. If Ned, had not panned out, oh well... it didn't cost the team much to take the chance. Obviously Yzerman believed in taking that chance. Meanwhile Carolina is still looking for a goalie.

To be fair what else can he say. he won't say HAHAHA we Got them good. cause there's a respect thing and it'd affect other relationships.. with people he needs to deal with.
He usually says nothing. That quote was telling.

Tell that to Captain Edward Smith!

But I agree with your post. The stretch to dismiss Yzermans contributions at times is absurd. And that is accepting the very good job done since he left

Probably a dumb question but prospects get moved and i don't follow that aspect of the game closely.

Stevie Y will have the Wings contending again. Only a question of how long it takes him.

Wait..I thought these two teams would never ,make deals , don't the owners hate one another.
Wasn’t it the Canes that made Feds a offer that Detroit had to match and ended up paying Feds 28M for the few games Feds played because making the Finals bonus. The most any player ever made in one season.

You have no clue what you are talking about. Yzerman played with a bunch of 3rd and 4th liners with brutal goaltending for most of the 80s, and most players would have gone nowhere with that.

Mr Ilitch is dead and Karmanos is not principal owner anymore. Don Waddell was Red Wings assistant GM back in 97-98 season, i guess they are open for business nowadays

Imo the canes think Ned is a flash in the pan, which we have seen happen many many times at the goalie position. They’re trying to win so they didn’t want to rely on him while Detroit isn’t trying to win yet so it really doesn’t matter if he keeps it up or not. The ultimate judge of this deal will be how Ned progresses

Yzerman returned home! The bottle of whiskey he drank didn’t stop Steve. This is very important news. I'm glad for him.

Ned is from Ohio, played junior in Plymouth MI and then Flint MI, and his girlfriend is in medical school there. He was really well liked in the Canes organization and given that he was all but guaranteed to get 2-3 times his prior salary from a neutral arbitrator, there was nothing personal behind the parting of ways.

Nobody has actually said that it was a bit of a sweetheart deal to send him home, but the stars really aligned around sending him to the Wings. On top of Ned’s connections there, it’s also a team that can give him a good opportunity, and they had the ability to trade negotiating rights with a decent veteran.

In all likelihood Waddell could have gotten a little more back in the trade if he shopped around the entire league (like maybe a 2nd instead of a 3rd) but Detroit made sense on a lot of levels.
