You’re completely missing the point to freak out and mention a superstar Bruins defenseman and honestly one of the GOAT defenseman. No one here is saying McAvoy is a Bourque/Chara/Orr. Do I think he will go down as a Bruins great defenseman? 110%.

However, the one thing these defenseman had in common were that they were the Top Dog for their defense core. Do you see that guy coming anytime soon? He has to be better than McAvoy which would give Boston TWO #1 quality defenseman. Unrealistic right now.

McAvoy is THE TOP DOG and a f***ing good one at that. He’s just scratching the surface as @LouJersey just said. Lock him up, blank check, whatever.

So essentially…. You can’t let superstars like McAvoy dictate your cap but you don’t sign them because worse/overpaid players are dictating your cap?

How does this make sense to you? If you’re going to overpay anyone, why wouldn’t you overpay the game changing players?

You have to work with the cashflow you have available not spend everything on one player and forget about the rest of the team makeup. Charlie signs for 11 per and we miss the playoffs for the majority of his new contract. Is this what the fans want?

You should not have to overpay for any player, they should just be fairly compensated. I know DS has overpaid prior and this is why we are in the current situation. He also did not utilize this year's cap availability to really improve the team.

well that and the fact his teams got knocked out by 2 of the 3 best players that ever played the game. He built four teams minimum that would have won cups IMO had they not played Gretzky, Messiee and Lemieux.

First of all it’s not going to be $11 per. It’s going to be somewhere between 9-10 per.

Second, have some of you not learned from the Seguin trade disaster? This guy is a franchise #1 defenseman and probably future captain at some point. You don’t let him go under ANY circumstance. You pay him. Sweeney has been lucky with getting players resigned for less. Won’t happen all the time. With the way some D have got paid this offseason, Charlie is deserving of $9 million+ per year. It won’t be $11 per. Won’t even ask for that unless he wanted out of here. Wouldn’t be shocked if he is locked up before the season starts. 8 years somewhere around $9.5 per.

I`m not even worried about it as Sweeney, if anything, has shown to be a very solid GM when it comes to re-signing and at fair value

For one, Zdeno Chara's $7.5 was 12.6% of the cap in 2011 when we won the cup. Charlie at $11 under the current cap would be 13.5%, which is high but not absurd.

Two, and more importantly IMO, thinking long term, this will be a steal. Lock him up for 8 years. The cap allowance has grown 26.7% in the last 8 years, and there's no reason it won't grow and fast once fans are allowed for a full season since there's been a flat cap with Covid and the new TV deals.

In 2006 Chara made 17% of the cap, by the time the original contract ended it was down to 12%. If we have similar growth, by the end of a hypothetical 8/88 McAvoy contract, for example, he might make only 10% of the team cap hit.

He's a franchise defenseman, a perennial Norris contender, just entering his prime now. Don't nickel and dime him. That's a Harry Sinden move. LOCK HIM UP. LOCK HIM UP. LOCK HIM UP.

Not the same. Chara got signed by the worst team in the league practically. Mac plays for a good team in the league. There is a difference. It’s like people are hoping he gets over payed. Charlie isn’t a PP guy yet. He’s still improving I’ll give you that. Is he a 9 mil guy. IMO no. Not yet.

Mcavoy has finished 5th and 10th in Norris voting the last two years so he’s widely regarded as a top 10 defender in the entire league. Get out of here with the 2nd pairing defender BS.
