Slaf could be the better player but he comes with a wider range of outcomes and the 1OA is not a position you take a project. We've taken projects at 3OA and it's been a disaster. You don't take someone who doesn't produce and bring them onto the goalless Montreal Canadiens and think he'll develop into an elite producer.

Wright might have the lower ceiling and a bazillion warts but he is the T-1st OA for a reason and I do not see any justification for Slafkovsky to go 1OA.

If this year is representative of their capability, there is a discussion to be made. But what if Wright is the 16 years old version that had a slow start this year? Down turn down that kind of potential for someone project as a 2nd line winger... please!

I have a vision of Nichuskin personally.
Nicuhushkin was pretty much a bust for the team that drafted him and he has 1 good season to his name (Two if you count his rookie which was good for a rookie). If we are thinking Slaf develops into the next Nichushkin then we should run because that's a terrible outcome for us.

EDIT: And this isn't directed at you, but it's kind of highlights the recency bias. Nichushkin is great if you only look at the last bit of his career and ignore everything else. And it's the same with Slaf, we have to ignore the bulk of his games and only focus on a select few at the end of the season.

When I think of Slafkovsky I automatically have visions of Kaapo Kakko and Jesse Puljujarvi.
You need to remember that big guys normally take longer before they breakout. I still have confidence that Kakko will dominate games eventually. Puljujarvi still needs about 2 full seasons.

Nichushkin is a good example of how long it takes big guys to breakout. Kakko and Puljujarvi just need more time.

MTL is not know for being patient with it's players, we should avoid drafting a guy whose going to take 5+ years to become an impact player because the fans/media will no doubt get on their case long before then and try to drive them out of town.

Nichushkin’s timeline is pretty much exactly what you need to expect from big guys. I do expect him to keep his recent play up. It’s sustainable.

Before the breakout Slaf might be better then Nichushkin, I don’t know, if he has more pure talent, better opportunity, etc. but I’d put a similar timeline for Slaf before a true breakout happens.

Even if that's true he was still a draft day mistake for Dallas.

Wright seemed like intense nervous type on a Sportsnet interview this morning. A small sample size, 4 minutes but not sure if I like how he will fit in with the pressure he will be under in Montreal

It's going to be really fun and interesting to look back on this draft in a couple years, predictions and all. I've never been this invested into a draft before so I'm anxious to see how it plays out.
