Well when you look at it that way you do have a point. These past few years, with the exception of Cole Caufield five years ago, Montreal's drafting has been far from stellar.
We have Slafkovsky, Caufield, Guhle, Struble, Harris in the line up right now.

With guys like Reinbacher, Hutson, Mailloux coming up and others in the AHL.

All drafted in the last 5 years.

I'm surprised at the return.
Chevy miss the last 5 years?

There must have been a bidding war.

Hughes hasn't given us any reason to believe he would do something so stupid. Not gonna happen.

He's talking about Sean missing them, not the Jets.
In the press conference today, Hughes said that he told Monahan he would trade him at the trade deadline if the Habs is not in a good position to make the playoff and the Habs would be in a position to resign Monahan. So no, Hughes doesn't want to resign Monahan to a long term contract.

Hughes set his price and Jets met it.

Hate to give up Monahan. He's smart player. Good production for his speed.

32nd first round is pretty much a second...
Like 33rd second round is pretty much a first? Anyway kinda hope it will be a 32nd pick (and kinda don't for obvious reasons), Monahan is a good player and was a good vet to have these past two years on a rebuilding Habs team. Hope he gets some success in Winnipeg.

You think Sean Monahan plays defence first? He doesn't play defensively at all. What are you talking about?

His a one-way forward with outstanding face off abilities.

The knocks on Monahan are health, lack of defence and lack of physical play. You read the wrong scouting report if you think Sean's gonna come to Winnipeg with a 200 foot game.
What a crock. Do you watch the games? Monahan has been solid defensively, including killing penalties. I don't care what he was in CGY, it's 100% irrelevant. This questioning Monahans defensive play TODAY is totally in contrast with reality.

Not too pressed about this trade from a Jets POV. His defensive issues should be helped a bit by playing a much more structured defensive system. He does things that the current Jets group does not - wins faceoffs and helps the PP. He pushes some players playing above their heads into more natural spots. The 1st isn't that vital, especially considering the Jets own Montreal's 2nd, we could be talking about 10 spots here. Didn't give up any prospects at all which further makes the 1st not a huge loss. Also, who else out there was really available at the C position anyway?

Montreal gets their 1st. Both sides should be happy. Fans love to talk about who wins. Both teams win if they get what they want.

I said he was worth a 2nd rounder, maybe a bit more. But thought a 1st rounder would only happen if the GM buying him was desperate.

Looks like I was wrong.

Good of you not to be a prick about it. I can see why your fanbase is so well liked.
Sounds like you were the prick and continue to sound like one. How do you expect people to react to your "prickness"

Because everyone is talking about the Jets first like we're in some dire need of more prospects. If the 20 some first rounder could become a Jet in 5 years from now I would be shocked.

Jets needed a centre who wins draws, plays PP, and can generate some offence. That's what they got

For those that hating giving up our "first", how many players here would you say are impact players? Now with all the players there, calculate the odds of one actually becoming an impact player.

Thing is, as smugly as it sounds, most Habs fans are a lot more knowledgeable than your standard issued NHL fans on here.
Yeah most of us actually watch other teams since we've had a bottom 1 on ice offensive product for the totality of the 21st century so far :laugh: At least that's why I started really getting into hockey

The issue is that there are a lot of us.... which means a small percentage of unrealistic, underinformed people still ends up being a lot compared to other fanbases.

And, as a general rule, the louder the poster, the less informed they are, so that small percentage takes up an inordinate amount of room on boards.

I just wish people would choose to interact more with the reasonable takes and waste less of their cyber-breath on the wackos.

Both teams win

Montreal gets a late 1st.

Winnipeg gets a 2 center and still has 5 million in space to get more and they keep their prospects. It’s win win. Monahan fits here long term. I’m sure 55 and 37 are happy.

Jets essentially got Lindholm for just a 1st. They aren’t that far off career points wise. And Monahan paid peanuts. Jets will add another player also. Win win.

I honestly came in here and was confused af why habs and jets fans were talking about their teams in the lindholm thread

I thought for sure monahan could be had without giving up a first.. nice trade for mtl

You seemed to have read to many bogus posts from ignorant wannabes experts on here. This notion he sucks on D is simply not true. CReated by HF posters to attempt to lower his value when Hab fans were saying he is worth at least a 1st.
This seems to be a common thread about any Habs player on the trade block.

It’s a good move for both teams. The Jets have lots of good prospects they keep - and it will be a late first. I suspect Hughes is going to package that pick anyway for a young forward. Habs have 5, 1st rounders in the next three drafts

It becomes a battle of hyperbole. Someone claims he's good defensively, others say he isn't, louder, his supporters say he is, even louder....

Monahan is no Selke winner, and he shouldn't matchup against high-end dynamic offensive threats, but that doesn't make him terrible defensively, either. Heck, last season the Suzuki line was at its best defensively when he was on it, since he'd backcheck better than his linemates who'd overcommit on offense.

I think it's way too early to say anything negative about the Canadiens last two drafts. Anything before that would be irrelevant since it was done by prior management.
