Welp, I was wrong. Good on the Canadiens.

Thank you to the Jets management for making me feel so much better about the price to get Lindholm too.

Jeezus that 16 game winning streak by Edmonton is scaring two Western teams now in overpaying for mid talent
I don't think that's what did it for the Canucks. JR has the reputation for targeting specific players and overpaying for them before the deadline which is exactly what happened. As scary good the Oilers are playing right now, I don't believe it had any impact in their move.

I also believe Chevy made a move in response to what the Canucks did and again, didn't have much to do with the Oilers.

Honestly Winnipeg made out like bandits if we take into account the astronomical price Vancouver paid for a rental as well. Monahan has been even more productive than Lindholm and the Peg got him a basically half the cost of Lindholm. Good trade.
Lindholm does a lot of things Monahan doesn't. I think it actually makes the trade for Lindholm look a little worse from Calgary's perspective but more like the 3rd/4th should have been a 2nd lol

They did the same thing with Chiarot not that long ago

Kent Hughes is great at selling and negotaiing a trade but terrible at drafting in the first round

Habs have picked 3 players in the first round under Hughes.

One was the guy projected to go first overall, one was projected to be the first dman taken and went roughly where he should have, and the other was a high skill player taken at 26th overall.

All 3 of these of these players were drafted in the past 20 months. How in the F*** can you say Hughes is good or bad at drafting in the first round with that sample?

I like the fact that we don't retain on Monahan, meaning we could retain in another trade at the deadline to get rid of someone.

He sure does; Henrique is a better defender and utility player, while being probably 5% less of an offensive force

This isnt 2018 anymore
You mean the Henrique who has a grand total of 13 playoff points in 28 games all of which came 12 years ago?

I love seeing Montreal fans get so excited for a late pick in an average draft class. With them getting rid of one of their few decent offensive guys, it should help their second rounder we have get even better. At least we can use that second rounder to bring in another piece or keep the pick. Vancouver set the price high during a thin centre market, with a couple more centres available, he wouldn’t fetch a first. I don’t mind the trade though. Monahan will play with solid offensive guys in Ehlers and Perfetti, I think he’ll out perform expectations. Chevy has killed it in trades for the most part, I’ll trust his decision for now.

This is the 3rd time that Winnipeg has traded a 1st for a rental. The picks dealt for Stastny and Hayes were used on Sandin and Heinola respectively.

Odds are that this trade won’t mean much 5 years down the line. Winnipeg probably won’t go deep in the playoffs (based on pure probability). Montreal most likely won’t draft anything meaningful with that pick.
You are probably right...how about you take back the 1st and save us the trouble of finding a worthless player to fill the pick;)

Hughes is a magician, holysh**.

Wow great job Montreal. This is a good trade for both sides, but incredible that the Habs got a 1st for taking Monahan and just flipped him for another 1st now, phenomenal GMing right there.

Monahan is a stud. Obviously hurts Mtl and will hurt the dressing room and winning culture but getting a late 1st is a good asset. Nice get for the Jets

Lindholm does a lot of things Monahan doesn't. I think it actually makes the trade for Lindholm look a little worse from Calgary's perspective but more like the 3rd/4th should have been a 2nd lol
Sure, Lindholm is better defensively but Monahan has been playing on a bottom 5 dogshit team and still producing. The difference between them is a lot less than many on this board are claiming although Money comes with injury concerns hence why I think this is a pretty fair trade for both sides.

This is irrelevant to how they are playing this season
It isn’t to a GM.

Between two players that produce equally, do I want one that actually produces in the playoffs or not for my team’s playoff run? Hmm tough one.

Agreed, but adding Monahan doesn't get us to the finals, so Chevy better use that cap space and add 1-2 more good pieces or this trade was kind of pointless IMO
The conditional 3rd was a dumb add for the Jets. They won't win the cup regardless and they can't trade the 3rd until next year (after their playoff run is over). ergo. They handcuff'd the 3rd round pick and made it untradable this year.

People criticizing Monahan really don't know what they are talking about.
He has played very well on a team that does NOT have great wingers.
He is healthy and can play in almost any situation.
A first is what the market was set at when Vancouver picked up Lindholm.
It was great asset management from Hughes but the Jets did get stronger.

If you think this was too much now, just wait for trade deadline day!

Great asset management by Hughes.

Really happy for Monahan too.

Not sure why people are shocked. Worse players routinely go for 1st rounders at or approaching the deadline especially when the draft class isn't considered great.

Because he went for Monahan he has more flexibility to make another move that maybe needed.
It's not a bad deal as Jets were desperate for center depth but feel they could have gotten a better player adding more assets but he is cheap. Hopefully it works out for both teams
