lol.

Not a bad deal, honestly. I wanna be salty, but no one really predicted Monahan playing this well.

This might be one of the worst over-priced move i can think of in a long time.

THANK GOD this trade happened after Lindholm was already acquired by the Canucks.

If this trade happened before Lindholms and it was the market setter, then Lindholm would have astronomically returned more.

Not only is it an over-payment, the Jets are over-paying for the wrong player, one of which has had major major injury concerns.

So for about $7.2m of total spend Montreal gets two first rounders (and maybe a couple throw in picks if conditions hit). Tidy bit of business.

It's more than that. Monahan has actually been a valuable hockey player and teammate on the Habs.

The Habs benefited from having him on the team.

'Tis the run up to trade deadline. We see teams pay a premium on certain positions every year and wonder why. And in a lot of cases, those teams don't really fall off if they aren't dealing their young players or prospects. This didn't touch any of their prospects and Monahan has been healthy. It's the cost of doing business.
To me it feels more like this is the Winnipeg cost of doing business. This is a guy who looked like he was going to retire 5 minutes ago. You hope for a better price tag?

He's had a nice little bounceback this year but hey, somebody's gotta score the points in Montreal. I guess the fact he regularly saw 20+ mins TOI in Montreal is encouraging for his injury woes. But will he get the same amount of playtime with the Jets?

Again I totally get why Winnipeg does the trade - it's a message to the squad to keep pushing. But man did Hughes make out like a bandit here, value wise.

Montreal somehow gets two firsts out of Sean fkn Monahan... absolute insanity
Those were 2 separate deals, though.... the first one to take on a big contract of an oft-injured player, and 18 months later, the second to rent out a player after he's proven he's healthy.

If the Western Finals is Winnipeg against Vancouver, I'd say both win their gambles. Same if one team gets to the SCF and the other re-signs the guy they acquired.

As fans, we want Cups.... as businesses, teams want continued success over time, and many home games, and Conference Finals mean a bunch of extra playoff revenue.

IMO the Jets aren't going to the finals with just adding Monahan, this trade is pointless unless Chevy adds significantly more with our available/significant cap space. Monahan helps sure, but he's far from the big missing piece a close contender needs to get them over the hump. This better be only trade #1 and 2-3 trades.

I wonder if Bos was the other team who was willing to part with a first for him but Chevy added a sweetener with the cond 3rd. It just seemed like an odd throw in

Well at least it got done before March 8th…. If this was a final day trade it would sting even more lol

I'll add this about Monahan, at least he's willing to play in hockey crazy Canadian teams and isn't some wall flower who refuses to play in Canada due to the pressure, media attn and a bit of snow. He played for the Flames, Habs and now Jets so he won't wilt due to fan & media pressure.
Which is why I wouldn't be surprised to see him re-sign in Winnipeg, frankly.

Terrible trade in my opinion.

Smells like desperation which isn’t usual for Chevy

Montreals second is close to the jets first which is ok I guess.

Still an overpayment

I guess Montreal in a way helped winnipeg get a haul from la. So we owed them this.
