A+ for the Habs. Turning Sean Monahan into two 1st round picks is hilarious. He’s done more for the Habs in 74 games than some guys who spent 10 seasons with the team.

I’m going to be in Winnipeg at the end of March, so time to dust off my Patrik Laine jersey and go pay my respects to the money man haha

Nope. I'm more addressing the hyperventilating Habs and Jets fans who both underestimate and overestimate the value of a late first-round pick. This trade doesn't move the needle at all. I'm excited that the Jets get Toninato out of the top six. Having Lowry, Namestnikov, and Toninato as your top 3 C is dreadful.
Who was hyperventilating? It was Jets fans. Go reread the garbage that was posted on the other threads. 90+% of Habs fans said fair value was a 1st or equivalent. And we know very well what the value of a late 1st is. So your insinuation that we don't, is as ridiculous as the flaming, baiting and trolling that was imposed on us for making what is clearly proven now, a fair assessment.

39 goals, 74 pts last year.

CaPdUmP

He just didn't fit with Tocchet but go off
He played with a team who is top 3 in the NHL offensively this year? Systems or not he shot 27% last year as an all time high in pretty much the history of the NHL.

Nonsense. The Habs would have gotten a first-round pick from another team. If he stays healthy it's well worth it from Winnipeg.
It's possible there's another stupid GM out there besides Chevy. Doesn't change the fact that Monahan isn't worth that kind of return.

Maybe you didn't answer your phone when he tried consulting, since you know so much.
Oh please. He doesn’t have to look to far to find good opinions on this, it was almost unanimous even before - Monahan for a 1st is not a deal we wanted to make before the trade, and it sure as hell isn’t now. Montreal fans are loving this because it’s a shit deal.

I thought Chevy was going after a big fish this year? Monahan? Just skimmed the last few responses, I'd agree that this seems like a panic response to Lindholm getting traded to Vancouver and arguably one of his most puzzling moves. Monahan will add depth, but I was expecting us to aim a lot higher this year based on the way he was talking things up. So unless we're trading our best prospects for something useful to this years playoff push with a roster player, I just don't see this trade moving the needle for us at all.

How quickly people turn on a GM that pulled a trade package for a disgruntled PL Dubois out of LA.
One move can be good while at the same time another can be bad. Brad Treliving signed Tanev and Coleman. He also signed Neal and Brouwer.

Interesting wagers by both the Jets and Canucks.

Only one or none can win this bet.
If the Western Finals is Winnipeg against Vancouver, I'd say both win their gambles. Same if one team gets to the SCF and the other re-signs the guy they acquired.

As fans, we want Cups.... as businesses, teams want continued success over time, and many home games, and Conference Finals mean a bunch of extra playoff revenue.

If he helps the Jets on their run, great. It's still a shitload to pay for a Sean Monahan.

'Tis the run up to trade deadline. We see teams pay a premium on certain positions every year and wonder why. And in a lot of cases, those teams don't really fall off if they aren't dealing their young players or prospects. This didn't touch any of their prospects and Monahan has been healthy. It's the cost of doing business.

Why wouldn’t we be happy?

We were paid a first rounder to take on Monahan, he played great for us, a complete professional, and now he got us a first rounder on his way out.

Two first rounders for free? Who wouldn’t be happy about that?

Not sure why you’d be so snarky over a trade that doesn’t involve your team.
It was great asset management by Hughes but Habs fans overreacting to anything positive just makes me laugh. Lets see if that bottom 10 1st ever plays meaningful NHL minutes. I'd bet not. Just glad Drury didnt overpay for a glorified 3rd liner.

A pick around 30 that more than likely turns into nothing. This board severely overrates draft picks.
Were you saying that when people, including many fans of your team, were saying there was no way Monahan was fetching a 1st round pick ?

It’s a decent top 10 but then falls off quick from what I’ve seen

Yeah if that is the case then people have to put jet's pick into proper perspective. I have a feeling you will see lots of first rounders being dumped at the deadline

So for about $7.2m of total spend Montreal gets two first rounders (and maybe a couple throw in picks if conditions hit). Tidy bit of business.

And to the surprised of nobody who know hockey and follow the NHL Montréal got a 1st round pick. Still baffled by people who thought a healthy Monahan would return a 2nd round pick max. I would assume people posting here would be fan of hockey and follow the NHL.
They are and they do. But IMO everything goes out the window if it concerns Habs players. They're all scraps, bums and overrated, don't you know? To think, a ridiculous number of them said Monahan was worth no more than a late 2nd, and reluctantly at that. Like there are tons of 60pt centers, great at faceoffs available for a 3rd round pick.

For sure, but its probably the best asset we could have hoped for Monahan, in terms of helping the team long term.

Maybe that pick becomes nothing, but it has the possibility of becoming more. Or even just be bundled up later down the road in another trade

I'll add this about Monahan, at least he's willing to play in hockey crazy Canadian teams and isn't some wall flower who refuses to play in Canada due to the pressure, media attn and a bit of snow. He played for the Flames, Habs and now Jets so he won't wilt due to fan & media pressure.
