The 2017 penguins won with 5 players eating up 49%, tampa was even higher than that...no team has 4 players eating 50 percent...NONE...quality cup teams and winners have players eating huge salaries yet still winning...from Kucherov, Stamkos, Hedman, vask, Malkin, crosby letang , Kessel, MAF, ....winning teams can easily sepnd 40 to 50 percent on 5 players and be successful. To make this easy for you , NO team has 4 players making 50%....lots of teams have 5 players between 40 and 50 amd multiple Cups to show for.it .....schools out ...

You're acting like depth isn't important as long as you have the "best" players at whatever cost necessary. All those players at 9.5 million (which is less than 10 FYI) were much better than Matthews when their teams won especially in the playoffs where he plays like a 7 million dollar guy if that, and had elite players like Hedman making half of what they deserve, and they were able to surround them with depth as a result. Tampa's bottom 6 in their last 3 years absolutely mogs the Leafs' and having to pay Matthews plays a part in that.

Stutzle is much easier to build a winning team around at his contract and performance (already comfortably better than Matthews this year despite being 4 years younger) if the rest of the money is well allocated

I'm sorry but one incredible season worth a Hart trophy is not enough to put Matthews in the same stratosphere as McDavid. Only to the leaf fans and media, no one else really ever saw it as a real debate.

Can Matthews get closer to McDavid's level? Sure, if he replicated his 21-22 season consistently. It's doable but A) we still need to wait and see him do it and B) it requires McDavid to stop improving (or improve slower).

Matthews is the better even strength point producer even in his off year vs Stutzle's peak.

Hes the better goal scorer, PP or ES.

And hes miles better defensively.

Its not as close as people would make you believe. Stutzle is fantastic - and maybe he gets to a top 5 calibre player one day, but hes not there.

I'm a Leafs fan and I wouldn't trade Stutzle for Matthews either if I were the Sens. Matthews can score some goals, but he runs hot and cold, tends to get dinged up, and I haven't see him reach a second gear in the playoffs. He's also about to become a UFA and ask for 12+ million a year.
