I'm biased but I believe goaltending is the most important position in the sport and the reason I'm always very angsty is that I think it's a travesty that a franchise like TML has a no-elite-experience goalie coach and bargain-bin goaltending.

Jack FAR exceeded my expectations for him, and he played well above his contract, but it's still not enough and it's not right that this team at this level with cup aspirations put all their chips in on an injury-played backup turned starter paid under 2m a season.

He was .897% and 3.15 GAA in 7 playoff games, the only games that really mattered. He was .880% 3.25+ GAA from December 15th and almost for the next four months in the regular season.

He's a nice guy, but when he plays bad, his confidence is shaken and takes him a LONG time to get his game back on.

He's not the answer, it's time to move on. His agent will want WAY too much money/term and he's not worth the risk, is too oft injured.

I'm guessing the hockey equivalent of Moneyball says you can spend less on goaltending but I would suggest having an elite big mojo goalie would actually free the rest of the team to be a little more aggressive in truly playing the way they want.
An elite goalie will certainly come in handy if the team continues to put up a limited amount of offence in Game 7s. I can understand the mentality of allocating the greater amount of cap to F and/or D. However, that aspect then becomes the manner in which the team needs to win games by more often than not.

Well Dubas found a great backup. Paid him 3.8 - thing is he isn't great at all, nor does he play more than a handful of games
He has better numbers over the past three seasons than John Gibson does, who’s a guy that some around here have been clamouring to trade premium assets for

I think having more strengths at other key positions may be a factor to help them in future Game 7's, or avoid Game 7's to begin with. A goalie who can seal the deal earlier in the series or who can give you rock solid, blue chip stability in net frees up the forwards to hunt for offense more aggressively. We saw that advantage with Cujo and Belfour who held the fort every time Toronto eliminated Ottawa with their world class forward group and budget goalie. Or when Felix Potvin pitched 3x 1-0 shutouts vs Chicago in 1994.

Big fan of both Belfour and Joseph; that's a HOFer and another who's not overly far off from that mark. A couple of big money deals for the time though and I'm not sure what the Leafs can hope to accomplish in that area now under the current cap and landscape?

I'd put money on them heading into the season banking on Mrazek to "bounce back" all while signing a veteran backup. There isn't enough cap space to do much more.

Oh well if he has better numbers....doesn't matter what he accomplished this year, which was to look terrible and promptly get injured. As he has in previous years

Gibson is probably the bet If he is available
If not then varlamov
If not then I would probably try to go husso and comrie as a combo if you can get rid of mrazek straight up

If you can’t get rid of mrazek try to trade hi for drieger.

I don’t know if they see black wood as the solution?

Doubt the Blues let Husso walk but he should be your #1 choice. Binnington is the guy they would prefer to move. He's been great these playoffs. Question is how much would the Blues be willing to retain and what would it take to satisfy them ??

Blackwood might be a buy low candidate who might get you the best bang for the buck.

I can't stand all these people who keep saying go get Gibson

Gibson has been an average to below average for like 4 years

Gibson’s gone down with the rebuild in Anaheim and been wasted. Exploring that option would require any team making the trade to really do their homework on what his health is like, what his mental approach is to the game is, etc. A lot of great goalies on bad teams just wear away and you want to make sure you’re not getting just a reputation. But the ability is high end in theory.

He’s had one other year where injuries set him back, which was the Covid year because of a thumb injury completely unrelated and neither are really anything to be worried about long term with an offseason full of rest recovery and reconditioning.
I’m not suggesting mrazek is a better goalie than Gibson just that Gibson hasn’t exactly been very good for a while, in fact so much so a stiff like mrazek has better numbers over a significant stretch while dealing with some debilitating career altering injuries according to some

Agreed 100%. Just imagine if we had even half of Tavares money to hunt down a better option in net
And then they’d be looking for a ppg 2way C to fill the giant gaper in the line up him leaving would make.

I voted yes, @ less than $5 million. I htink it is going to take $4.5 AAV to get him for 3 or 4 years.

I don't mind that price, but Petr has to be gone and we go with a cheaper #2... that is a little scary.

Also, I don't see one FA goalie option that I feel is as good as Campbell. I don't see many trade options. Fleury is not coming here.

With the current UFA class we have seen and any potential trade targets like Gibson, do you let Jack walk or resign him?
I like the thought of giving up our 1st to obtain "The guy", not sure who that guy is but we need a 3-5 year plan.
MacKenzie Blackwood depending on his health...maybe.

Lou who is the goalie whisperer always had A GOALIE
Drafted Brodeur with a 1st
Gave up a 1st for Cory Schnieder who was excellent for 4-5 years
Gave up a 1st for Freddy
Signed Varlamov

Leafs need to follow suit.

Say what you want but Lou's move to bring Freddie here was MASSIVE and a huge key to stabilizing our franchise and establishing us as a year-in year-out playoff team.

First thing Lou does is always build from the net out.

Leafs are built from the other team's net and in.

No money now and noone in the pipeline

I can't believe how many people are saying no. The guy was an all-star this year, and totally matched Vasilevskiy in the playoffs.

Yet people would rather take another ride on the goalie carousel? Give me a break.

Varlamov is my hopeful target. Sorokin is a Vezina calibre guy, I don't see Varlamov getting many games this year.

Jack had a sub .900 sv% in the series. He's a decent goalie but I don't think our Cup hopes are impacted if we replace him with another mediocre starter. Jack's mental state in this market is a very real distraction, I think.
