I can't choose an option in the poll because for me term matters. It's the term that causes contracts to become anchors most of the time, not the AAV. I might consider a higher AAV for a short-term contract, but if he wants 4-5 years at 5M+ I don't see how they can do that. And I think he might get that because so many teams need help there. What would make it more palatable for those other teams, compared to Toronto, is many of them probably don't have a 3.8M backup they're stuck with. If we didn't have that problem I'd have much less trouble committing to Campbell. The Leafs simply can't afford to have TWO bad goaltending contracts.

He had the same save % as the perennial best goalie in the world, we didn't win because we didn't score, one goal in game 7? Seriously? And you want to run the goalie out of town?

This loss is not on Jack Campbell, he is a great goalie who can step it up, and we can afford him (most likely) if we were to upgrade the position it would cost us 5+ million easy and we don't have that extra space.

Regardless of your feelings on him, i said from DAY ONE that Mrazek deal was BRUTAL and it is and was, 3.8 for that joke? You screwed yourself getting Campbell for cheap based on that contract alone, if we do resign him he's obviously the #1 over Mrazek so he knows this, he can't take less, that would be insane.

4 million or under 4 and Mrazek goes with a pick to afford him, but if Campbell walks we are not going to be happy next season running with Mrazek, or seeing the prices of goalies this year, just watch.

This "he was as good as Vasi" is the dumbest argument. Everyone is agreeing Vasi had a bad series by his standards, and yet we want to make Jack a hero for equalling that performance?

So what? This is a loser mindset. Do we only measure our performance against our opponent or do we measure it against ourselves/the league?

Jack's numbers were terrible. If he was even a middle of the pack round 1 goalie we win the series easily.

He was under .900 for the series.
He has been under .900 since December.
He is 0-5 and under .900 in 5 chances to eliminate teams.
He was 22nd in sv% among first round goalies.
For the 2nd year in a row he lets in a bad goal to lose an OT we dominated in game 6, and follows it by allowing a bad goal to open game 7.

I said it all season last season and he proved me right.

If this team has serious cup aspirations, Campbell cannot be your starting goalie.

You replace both of them, and no that doesn't mean hand Kallgren the backup job,, if you want a rookie backup go with Woll he played less but he played much better.

but I want them to find a way to trade for/ sign a legitimate #1, like a Gibson, or Kempeur, Fluerry, Lehner, Varlamov, possibly Blackwood though he is the least interesting due to health. but he is talented and is only 25.

and then bring in a veteran Backup like a Greiss or a Korpisalo, or a Jones, I know Jones hasn't been great recently but he's been on awful teams particularly the flyers, Desmith, Maybe Murray if he gets bought out. Braden Holtby

I think you need to redo everything in net, EVERYTHING

including the Marlies tandem there are teams that are 3 goalies deep that we can trust

we aren't

get rid of Kallgren, MAYBE keep Woll as the #3 and redo the Leafs Tandem

something like

#1 Gibson
#2Greiss
#3Woll

might be alright
or

#1Varlamov
#2Holtby
#3 Woll

might be alright

but what we got right now doesn't cut it and will not cut it.

lots of alternatives

Logical good alternatives.

I’d rather move on, but FA market is really weak. So unless there is a trade they probably have to bring him back.

Honestly, only if he's cheap.

I don't want to pay him like a starter. It needs to be under 3M for me.

He's mentally fragile, which is tough for a goalie. Jack Campbell in 2 seasons with the Leafs is 0-5 in elimination games. He completely choked both OT's against Montreal, allowing 2 goals on 3 shoots in OT. Leafs outshoot Montreal like 15-3 in 2 OT's and lost both. Then, in Game 7 that first Montreal goal was a bad goal. He choked again.

Even his rebound on Point's OT winner (horrible rebound), the 5 on 3 goal (why are you standing up?) and the shorthanded goal on TB where the player spun, his legs are caught open again. It's like sometimes he forgets how to play goalie when he's under pressure. He also gives out a ton of BAD rebounds that the Leafs have to cleanup. If the defence isn't airtight, he kicks out a rebound to the slot and we get told 'what could Campbell do on that?!', meanwhile Vasi is making saves on his ass and swallowing every rebound.

I'd rather have just an above average, or average goalie that makes the easy saves than Campbell. He was the worst goalie in the league since December.

I remember someone before the Tampa series posted the Leafs record when they get .900 goaltending, it was impressive. So Campbell went to the playoffs and gave the worst goaltending performance of all the starting goaltenders, under .900 save % of course

If he wants any more than backup money, I want us to just find a solid reliable goalie. It's dumb paying him and Mrazek over 6M combined. Find us a legit starter for that price.

Out of 14 career playoff games with the Leafs, Jack Campbell let in the first goal in 10 of them: Game 2, 4, 5, 6 and 7 of the Tampa series and Game 1, 2, 5, 6, 7 vs Montreal.

Out of those 10 games, he has 3 wins.

I don't know if you want to attribute that to playing Vasilevskiy and Price in back to back years or if the Leafs tend to start out sluggish more often than not, or if Soup is more likely to be the goalie who blinks first or gets burned on some bad counter punch.

I'd bring him back for less than 4. He's a bit inconsistent and injury prone, but he's gone head to head with Carey Price and Vasilevskiy, and he hasn't been outplayed by either one.

The last thing you need is an inconsistent goalie with a contending team. I don't think he's the right fit for us - but would be a starter on a non-playoff team.

No team has won the stanley cup without stellar goaltending. It's unfortunate though because there really aren't better options in free agency. John Gibson would be a great trade candidate - but his cap is just way too high

... what? Mrazek is a dumpster fire no matter what happens with Campbell, that's a nonsensical reason to commit to keeping one of them.
Campbell is the member of that tandem I'd prefer to see retained. That said, there are a number of considerations involved. Campbell is a pending UFA (that apparently turned down the team's initial contract offer), while Mrazek is signed to a contract with a 10 team veto and has previously cleared waivers. I'm a tad nervous about Dubas bringing in one goalie, let alone two. The possibility might even exist for the team to go back to the well again with the same tandem. It's easy to speculate but tougher to accurately determine how this will all turn out.

Lovely man. Incredible backup goalie. Unrivaled teammate.

Agree and hope he gets very well paid - elsewhere.

But if he's here again as the starter it's a sign the management is scared and taking the easy choice because they know the hard choice is making a move in net when the player is well-loved.

Raptors management didn't blink when they shipped derozan out even though he was well-loved. Good player but he's not the best player on a championship team.

Very similar situation here.

Keep Campbell, give him $10M, and carry on with him and only our 4 highly paid forwards. I mean that's what these greedy 4 should have expected by eating up all of our cap so our Leafs could not surround them with any other decent talent.

And shame on MLSE etc. for NOT canning the debacle that is Shanahan and Company !!!

Yep, even Taveras for what he has stopped bringing I see as greedy. He should have toddled off to San Hose !!!
Burke and Nonis weren't the answer, Shanahan and company apparently weren't the answer either who the Fxxk is?

Campbell is a very high-end back-up or a lower-end starter, and we probably got more than our money's worth out of him.

I said this in another thread but no, we can't afford what he'll be offered elsewhere. And he owes it to himself to get the most money possible at his age, he's never had a big payout before I don't think, and I'd be surprised if the chance came to him again.

And, call me crazy but I wouldn't be against starting next season with Mrazek, if only to hopefully improve his trade value for a later move. It's a gamble but we've seen that the team can survive bad goaltending, at least during the regular season.

Of course if it goes wrong and he's just as bad again, then we're really up shit creek. If it becomes clear the Leafs are desperate and have to make a goaltending change mid-season, we'll get absolutely robbed in trying to jettison Mrazek and/or acquire someone new.

Exactly.

Love him as a 1B at under 2m.
He's fine as a 1B at under 3.5m
Hate him as a starter at over 4m.

Someone's paying him well over 4m, and he deserves the money and I hope he gets it, so I really hope he's gone. For our sake and also his.

The guy has proven time and time again he's not a legit #1 in the NHL. If you can get him at 3M x 3/4 fine but any more than that and i'd take my chances.
