Varlamov is my hopeful target. Sorokin is a Vezina calibre guy, I don't see Varlamov getting many games this year.

Jack had a sub .900 sv% in the series. He's a decent goalie but I don't think our Cup hopes are impacted if we replace him with another mediocre starter. Jack's mental state in this market is a very real distraction, I think.
Agreed. I like him, but he can't be your #1 guy and from all reports he wants big money

I can't believe how many people are saying no. The guy was an all-star this year, and totally matched Vasilevskiy in the playoffs.

Yet people would rather take another ride on the goalie carousel? Give me a break.
He played like an all-star, and then he played like an AHL goalie
Vasi didn't play like he's capable of
He wants big money and his injury prone. The goalie carousel is Dubas's doing

I'd be prepared to give him as much as Mrazek got last summer. That's generous IMO as he's mid-tier and probably requires more than some serviceable backup/co-starter. I understand that there has been some discussion about his confidence level and that he's a bit of a different cat. Well, he hasn't flaked out during his time here and he's managed to play a lot of games.

But Mrazek would have to go. It's not up to Campbell to bail out the organization for its poor signing by taking less money. This is going to be the largest contract in Campbell's career.

Also I hope no one is thinking Kallgren is a future option. His lateral movement and puck tracking isn't NHL level IMO. Woll, who still needs some work and to stay healthy, has a better shot as a long term NHLer IMO.

Gibson’s gone down with the rebuild in Anaheim and been wasted. Exploring that option would require any team making the trade to really do their homework on what his health is like, what his mental approach is to the game is, etc. A lot of great goalies on bad teams just wear away and you want to make sure you’re not getting just a reputation. But the ability is high end in theory.
Yeah I think it's an avenue to explore at the least

Determine if his drop off is due to lack of motivation, injuries, or just goaltending voodoo. If it's due to motivation, then I'd be down to pull the trigger on him. If we get elite Gibson we have the ability to win these 1-0 games that our goaltending hasn't given us before

I'm curious about what everyone's thoughts are on bringing Campbell back?

Personally I'm starting to think we need to swing for the fences goalies wise and grab a Gibson type of starter so unless Campbell is fine playing backup for low AAV I may not be interested in him returning.

Thoughts?
Thank you for adding the poll, I came in with the specific intention of asking you to so you saved me that.

Voted 3.

Trade Mraz and then see what bargain we can find. We can start the season with an in home job contest for back up if we can't get a good score and sort it out by the deadline. That might let us bank some cap to. (if you budget 1.5 for back up and only spend 800k what is that 700k worth by the deadline? It's like a couple mil isn't it?)

I wouldn't say no to a 1mil Gorgiev but that is probably low. Any local guys who might give us a discount as good as Georgy? That's who I take.

Failing that how about a 50% retained Price?
We're screwed in goal aren't we?
I feel like we are on shaky ground for sure. The drop from Campbell in our depth chart is pretty damn drastic. I don't care how much you like any of the Marlies. If Jack will take a hit that makes sense we are kind of obligated to keep him and be at the mercy of health. I like him and I could live with that but we need a serious backup so he has to be affordable or we have to take our chance with free agency.

I guess I like Kuemper best but what does he cost? Will he even be available. After him I see Holtby and garbage. I might 1 year Flower.

He was an all-star for a few months then really bad for a few month, injured then came back ok.

If he matched vasi in the playoffs we would have won. Game 7 if he matched vasi .968sv% we would have won that game probably in OT or even 1-0 as Tb had 25 sog and we had 31 but even if we ignore stats, goalies need to make saves when they are needed and jack let in a bunch that were not bad but not good either and lots that needed saves.

As for a carousel of goalies? Rather that until we acquire a proper starter than settle for mediocre. Goalie is the most important position. Good teams fail because of goaltending.
When their coach said he wasn't worried about scoring on us and about getting traffic in front of the net, he knew where Campbell is weakest. People thought he was talking about our D, but Imo it was about our goalie

I like the thought of giving up our 1st to obtain "The guy", not sure who that guy is but we need a 3-5 year plan.
MacKenzie Blackwood depending on his health...maybe.

Lou who is the goalie whisperer always had A GOALIE
Drafted Brodeur with a 1st
Gave up a 1st for Cory Schnieder who was excellent for 4-5 years
Gave up a 1st for Freddy
Signed Varlamov

Leafs need to follow suit.
I would tend to agree. Honestly we got like 5 or so good years out of Andy and it cost a late 1st and a 2nd or something like that. Would be fine going that route if Dubas could grab a bona-fide #1 starter that wasnt crazy expensive

No worries my friend. Was the poll not working for a while? As I created the thread with the poll included.

Ya im of two minds but I sort of feel like Campbell will not be the goalie who brings a cup to the leafs. Don't think he has it in him physically or mentally to make it through that many grueling rounds. Thats what I'm more interested in letting him go and grabbing a property starter, bringing him back as a backup or shipping Mzarek out of town and grabbing a quality tandem. Basically I dont want to rely on Jack as our number 1

Not as a starter or a #1 goalie, so No. Both him and Mrazek have to go! I have a feeling he signs in Edmonton in the off season. Let him walk.

Perhaps I didn't notice it last time.

I'm warming up to Kuemper and Holtby quite a bit. I'm starting to think Jack is too stressful for our market despite what a nice guy he is. I think we are all tired of the constant uncertainty in net. Mrazek is among Dubas's biggest blunders imo. It's hard not to like Jack though and to think he's got a lot of good games ahead in him.

Ideally he's a backup. Has basically no traits you look for in a #1. He's injury prone, inconsistent, and seems to have mental and confidence issues at times.

3 mil would be the absolute max I'd go.
My thoughts exactly. At best, he's a good tandem goalie when he's healthy and confident.

We've never had the best goalie in a series.
I don't know how realistic of an expectation that can be when facing the likes of Vasilevskiy, Price, Rask and Holtby (all Vezina winners)...which basically leaves Columbus.

the poll is useless without more context...

Is Mrazek gone? How many years for Campbell and what AAV?

1 year show me at 4 mil
2 years at 3 mil
3 years at 3.5
4 years at 4 mil
5 years at 4.5

Almost like that might be the missing ingredient or something...

Something to mention is that each of those individuals you mentioned were developed by those teams over a period of time. Rask never played a game in Toronto so he was really developed by Boston. Maybe Campbell is deserving of more of a chance than this "I think he played crappy in these games" type narrative?

Also, Frederik Andersen is now top five in the league for save percentage among starters after leaving Toronto under similar circumstances.

That said, if Campbell is actually asking for 7 million? LOL byyye!

I wonder if Muzzin for Varlamov might be a straight across salary for salary, position for position?

Top-voted option: "Yes, AAV < 4 million"

All of you who voted for this want to run it back with a goalie you don't think is worth even $4 million/yr.

Meaning if they can only afford a goalie under 4 mill and jack was available at that price he'd be the best option available.

If they can find over 4 mill to spend then there are better goalies available and i wouldn't want Jack back.

Obviously I hope the chosen direction is to invest more $ in goaltending but I'm not confident in Dubas doing that. He's continuously shown he doesn't believe in investing in the position. Rookie goalie coach + bargain bin goalies.
