Interesting contract. Why didn’t the Rangers frontload it? He might be harder to move because he is owed $5.1 million next year and $5 million in 2024-25. Also he has a 15 team no trade so he could list all the rebuilding teams.

Age 29
4 years remaining at $3.6M AAV
49 GP, 9G, 14A, 23P this season
Good third liner, penalty killing, leadership, locker room guy, Cup experience, intangibles etc etc.

Rangers desperately need the cap space in the offseason and getting rid of him might be the only way.
Retain 600K and the Oilers would do Puljujarvi. NYR can walk from Puljujarvi at the end of the year. Oilers get a 3 line upgrade

Teams would be interested, but imagine those with little cap room will be able to make it work or aren’t incentivized to give up a lot. 4 year term might throw some teams off too.

In a vacuum the Canucks that lack quality third liners should be all over this but we’ve got more cap issues than NYR.

I'd do that. 2023 2nd + Puljujarvi for Goodrow (30% retained)

Not saying he's capable of filling Goodrow's shoes, but Puljujarvi has pretty decent D metrics and you'd get to see if a change of scenery can do him any good from deadline thru playoffs. Craps the bed, easy walk away and there's that cap space for next season.

For me the value is adding Goodrow experience and leadership. We need that in the room. I'd put that 2023 2nd on the table for it.
I am late to the party . I just offer Puljujarvi for Goodrow 600 K retained. Less cap retained for the NYR who need the space and the Oilers upgrade their bottom 6 at the same cap.

The high salaries in years 3 and 4 make the contract very good for a buyout in those years. The assumption is Drury did that intentionally in case a buyout became necessary. If Goodrow were to be bought out this summer, the Rangers would save 3,841,666 against the cap (full cap hit plus a 200k credit).

We aren't looking to make this deal at the deadline. We'd rather have Goodrow than Puljujarvi for the playoffs. If we end up moving Goodrow, it will be in the offseason.
Pretty sure NYR can trade Blais as a cap dump and fit Meier at 50% that way, plus whatever they'd give the Sharks in Lafreniere. I doubt Kakko will be moved since he's showing signs of life and no shot they trade Chytil since he's their best young player on the forward side at the moment
It's not about fitting Meier this year, but rather long term. We can't afford to re-sign him at 8+ mil. And we certainly aren't trading Laf for a rental.

I hope im wrong about Chytil but I won’t be wrong on Kravtsov. Talk in a month
Respectfully you're already wrong on Chytil
Krav -- they still have to stop effin around and let it work, like Chytil grew.
This is some level of trial and error, but we can get there faster by being smarter about it.
Kreider - Tro - Krav
the KTK or T2K line

a month is fine

Bern, you know I'm a fan of the Rangers young forwards, but I've got to tell you I just don't see it with Kravtsov. He's only a couple of months younger than Chytil and he just hasn't shown anything other than a rare combination of physical and emotional fragility. I don't see a place for him in the lineup next year, sad to say.
Not only is there a place, my friend, but if they listen to me and do it my way, this guy could turn into Ratelle lite.

Hard to see instant results I admit, b'c

why do the Rangers want to get rid of the toughness they loaded up on?
Reaves, now Goodrow...
Blais perpetually injured.
Is Will Cuylle expected to fulfill that role?

A 3rd plus a genuinely good 3rd liner is free?

Engvall is basically no different than Mikheyev.
Well, considering this is for the offseason, and Engvall is a UFA, yeah... it's basically for free. If the trade happen now, Engvall is a pending UFA who we won't be signing if the goal was to free up 3 million'ish. So, yeah, again, free...

Would love to have him back in TB but I think nyr would have to get him down under 3.

I would love to send Namestnikov out for him, with a + on our side. But there would need to be retention for the +.
You're messing with us, right?

Goodrow (30% retention) for Pulju + 2024 2nd + 2025 3rd

Rangers can walk from Puljujarvi in the off season or offer a lower $$ vs the RFA qualifying offer. Nobody is giving him 3m next season.
If we're retaining 30%, and then bringing in an ELC contract, or somebody else, that seems like a real waste for a 2024th, and 2025th pick. 30% seems like way too much.

Trading him is only an option in the offseason if we need the cap space. If we don't need the cap space, we're happy to keep him.
Nothing that really warrants trading him.
We may not have a choice.

Where?

I think we can both agree that Kravtsov on the 4th line is a waste of time. That leaves three lines worth of spots. I know you've advocated for VK at C before, but the team is stacked three deep on centers with Zibanejad, Chytil, and Trocheck. The LW is locked down with Panarin, Kreider, and Lafreniere. The RW has Kakko and two question marks (Goodrow if he's still here? Probably at least an extended audition for Othmann?). So yeah, hypothetically, there IS a spot there. But if you have the Kid line together and put Othmann with Panarin and Zib, then you are looking for another guy for that Kreider/Trocheck "greasy" line. Whether that guy ends up being someone like Vesey or Blais or a similar minimum salary guy, the style of that line doesn't fit Kravtsov at all.

So it really comes down to who do you want on the line with Panarin and Zibanejad? The 23 year old, offense-first guy who has 10 career points (17 per 82 game pace)? Or the 20 year old, shoot first, top prospect?

And all of that is before even thinking about whether or not Kravtsov wants to BE back with the Rangers next year. He's been trying to get out of the org for literal years. This was really a "show me" year, and he's shown...six points.

I think this is a bad thread.

Goodrow is a very good 3rd liner and extremely reliable. For someone with his skillset to be playing at a near 40 point pace is pretty invaluable.

He is a vital part of the team. Its not his fault GG puts him in unpopular situations but he works his ass off.

Should not be traded.

Great. What is your plan to re-sign Chytil, Miller, and Lafreniere with Goodrow on the books. Make laughable offers to the kids? Trade Lindgren? Trade Panarin and Trouba even though their contracts won’t allow it?

Yes, the Rangers are better with Goodrow. Doesn’t mean he won’t be gone this summer.

We have, as of now, $16m to sign Miller, Chytil, Lafreniere, Gauthier and Kravtsov.

That seems very achievable. Dont see the issue here.

Show me, but still not properly used.
Letting him go cheap would be unforgivably BAD asset mgmt, which can, and hopefully will be avoided.

In the short term, as I say, we are married to bread. He won't stay his whole 3 seasons after this b'c he is not getting an offer from us, for any $$$, due to cap, so he will waive before, but not now.

Also short term, Goodrow needs to be stapled to bread. Can't have a scenario where he gets bullied, Kreider or Zib step in, and break a hand. If that IS what we have to do in the POs, GG should start with that now.

So:
Goodrow - Zib - Panarin

We do
Kreider - Tro - Krav

then kid line

leaves Vesey brod Gauthier

I see a deal for LaF w/Sens, will post something later during the wk
I believe we can move enuf salary to possibly extend both Chytil + KAM, dep on what they want, but I think they work w/us on 3-5 yr deals since bread and trouba will be gone, and the team has a young core w/upside

Goodrow may have to go dep on that deal
Lindgren will have to go for picks and they need to admit to that reality and do it now to max the return, let Robertson get 3rd pair mins.

I don't want Robertson to turn into another Reunanen, a guy that was underutilized, and eventually we got nothing. If better ahead of him fine give those guys a few games off here and there, and up Reunanen value and deal. Same w/Robbie,

Thanks for Krav at pivot acknowledgment.
When bread goes, with Goodrow following or relocated in lineup, we can explore
Kreid - Krav - Zib
this keeps CK comfy on left, and on def/faceoffs utilizes zib as a righty. Again, on offense, no prob guys floating w/what works.

agree and going w/that for discussion purposes, not addressing if how we can add to that 16m,

KAM 5 yrs say the larger # of 6.2 per
Chytil 4 yrs say 4.75 per
= a hair under 11
Gauth will take min this time and be promised more when trouba/bread are gone
so we are less than 12 from 16
= 4m + to do Krav + LaF

Recheck your math…

Ok, I’ll do it for you

Panarin - 11.642
Zibanejad - 8.5
Kreider - 6.5
Trocheck - 5.625
Goodrow - 3.642
Kakko - 2.1
Vesey - 0.8

Lafreniere - ?
Chytil - ?
Gauthier - ?
Kravtsov - ?

Othmann/Forward #12 - 0.894 (estimate)
Cuylle/Forward #13 - 0.828 (estimate)

Fox - 9.5
Trouba - 8
Lindgren - 3
Schneider - 0.925
Harpur - 0.788

Miller - ?

Jones/D #6 - 0.9 (estimate)

Shesterkin - 5.667
Halak/Goalie #2 - 1.1 (estimate)

Cap - 83.5M
Spent - 70.411M
Remaining for those 5 players - 13.089M

It’s going to be a tough squeeze with the years Chytil and Miller are having. Goodrow needs to go.

So your basing on players on minimal contracts.

14 players signed with $16m in cap space next season.

Miller and Chytil say take about $8m of that.

Lafreniere, Gauthier and Kravtsov takes about $4m at.

That leaves about $3m for 3 minimal contract players and Run with 22 players again.

Goodrow is not getting traded.

Just a guess but I think they had a plan to buy him out after this season if they needed the cap space. They knew the flat cap was going to be in effect for at least until 2023-24 so they backloaded the contract in a way to save the most money when it was needed.

Well you said there was 16M for 5 unsigned players. Now you’re agreeing it’s 16M for 8 unsigned players. Thanks for acknowledging without acknowledging.

Your projected contracts for all of Chytil, Miller, and Lafreniere are extremely optimistic. Even if those deals get signed, the Rangers will be strapped and maxed on making deadline moves. It’s pretty clear the front office believes in keeping space for deadline acquisitions.

Trading Goodrow is the least painful way to sign the kids to the right deals and keep space for acquiring a player better than Goodrow.

Do I know how it will unfold? No. But to say the Rangers won’t consider trading Goodrow with the current situation is just blind.

Yeah, I was sorta hinting at that in my post indirectly. I know this might be controversial but what about a move off of Panarin? His impacts offensively and defensively have declined a bit and I'm sure if the Rangers can get off of that contract, they would. Issue is the worrying about future relations with future UFA's interested in NY but when has that stopped guys before from signing with NYR asap on July 1st, lol.
