I remember in the middle of the 2005-2006 season, Pierre McGuire was asked who he would build around. The choices were 3 super rookies - Alex Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby, and Dion Phaneuf.

"No disrespect to the other guys but this has to be Dion Phaneuf."

Wonder if he regrets that take?

He'd probably do it again with a big smile and biographical details of Phaneuf's family to the 10th generation.

I thought Alex Galchenyuk would be good for Pittsburgh. Not Phil Kessel good, but a decent top 6 wing.

Pickering, Ontario
I proposed around late May 2015

Phil Kessel for Alex Barkov + Aaron Ekblad + 2015 1st rounder from panthers

I was like 15/16 at the time but sheesh that was some f***ing terrible valuation by me haha

This goes way back but I thought Sam Gagner would score 80 points. More recently I didn’t think Quinn Hughes offense would translate as well as it has.

I thought Boston would miss the playoffs this year.

I thought Eichel and Cassidy would be a poor mix and Vegas would miss the playoffs or be out in the 1st.

I thought Gudbranson would shore up our top 4 D.

I thought Loui Eriksson would be good for at least his first 3 years with the team.

I talked myself into thinking OEL might be a decent acquisition (though I have been funnily prescient in my prediction that Garland was more of a tweener type than a guy worth targeting).

There are some reactionaries on the Canucks board who were calling for us to trade Petey and Hughes when each of them struggled in the last 3 years, but I don't expect to see them in this thread.

Waaaaay over there
I initially urged fellow Canucks fans to have patience with Benning.
I liked Virtanen's tool kit and thought he would eventually develop into a speedy scoring winger who was tough to play against.

I was planning an entire series of Scott Pilgrim themed GDTs based around Beau Bennett becoming the top 6 winger that the pens needed after all the failures. Had to scrap it when he got injured. Then he never really stopped getting injured. It was pretty much a gamble whether the GDTs would make sense by the end of the year even if he didn't get injured.
