I'll take Ovechkin playing over you watching any day of the week.
@Gold Standard is a good guy and he knows his hockey but he's what's known in medical terms as a "grump". ;)

Just let Russia play, call them something else if you are worried that having a team called "Russia" somehow means support for Putin and his War. Ovechkin should get one more chance to represent Russia before his career ends.

It will be O.V.'s last kick at the can, so call it "Team O.V.". They can rally around their best player (ever).

Trying to shoe-horn a bunch of russian players into a non-russian team with other europeans would make it a gimmick tournament, just like 2016 was. IMO, best to keep anything in 2024 strictly to national teams, excluding russia. Should provide good entertainment regardless of russia's involvement.

There's never been more parity in international hockey than today so it would be nice to have all the top teams present.
It used to be a big 7 with Slovakia and czechs both strong. They both fell off the map and now it's a big 5. So I'd say less parity then 20 years ago

Czechs, Finns, Swedes and France said they would not allow KHL players to represent them this year. Slovakia has said they will allow the KHL players to represent them.

I dont think they can afford losing guys like Rybar, Kristof, Jaros and Liska so I dont blame them. Luckily we only have Pulkkinen, who never showed up on national team anyway.

Might be missing the point a bit by the federation.

I'm sure they will find a way to include them. Perhaps under another team name - like they do at the Olympics. Team United Nations?

People want to see O.V. and the other Russian stars.
If they will find a way to include them, the tournament will be boycotted by Finland, Czechia, Slovakia, Sweden. Latvia etc.

Have a nice tourney then - why not invite Belarus, China and North Korea and enjoy a "World Cup" with pariah states;))

Here are the "World Cup" round robin groups for those of you that really want to see russians participating:

Group A:
CAN NHL players who don't care what happens in Europe
Belarus
China

Group B:
USA NHL players who don't care what happens in Europe
Russia
North Korea

Really? I'm surprised.
If you're surprised, I feel sorry for you.

Btw since it's Sept 11 today - was it a surprise to you that the 9/11 attack had severe consequences?

putin's aggression vs Ukraine has already at least 10 times more people killed than the 9/11 attack

No need to be smarmy with your response.

******

I'd be surprised if players from Sweden, Finland and other nations objected to O.V. and other Russian players having their own team - assuming it was not named Russia.

There is one possibility to have a Russia team participating in a World Cup best-on-best:
Team Russia with players explicitly stating that they disapprove putin's attack on Ukraine.

Unfortunately, I have not seen or heard too many russian NHL players clearly saying that...

That's fair.

*******

The World Cup is a joint NHL / NHLPA venture and the NHLPA represents ALL NHL players so I doubt they will agree to a tournament unless the Russian players can play - even if it is under another name.

Yea no.. Theres not change Russia will be allowed to play in World Cup if it isnt allowed in IIHF events and countries like Finland Sweden Czech etc would option not to play againts them. Maybe not players but federations etc media pressure would be huge to boycott.

We'll see.

Does anyone really think the NHLPA would agree to a tournament where certain players were banned?

If the Russians are still banned do you really think that the Finnish, Swedish and Czech Ice Hockey Federations will sign off on that and agree to play in a NHL/NHLPA tournament if it includes the Russians? They won't. You might as well accept that simple fact right now.

If the NHL does attempt take a cue from the Russian Olympic Committee team and go with team Consisting of Russian Athletes Panel, I wouldn't be shocked if some federations singled out Ovechkin specifically as an issue given his blatant boosting of Putin. I would guess that Russia not involved is most likely, followed by a made up Russian team not called Russia, and Russia actually being in the tournament a distant third.

Check out Julia Davis report today in twitter @juliadavisnews. It's 7 minutes of classic Russian. don't worry, subtitles are provided.

There is no way Russians are playing. Look at what happened to Slovaks for saying they'll allow a few Slovaks from khl to play for national team. The blowback would be massive.

I can't think of any sports where Russia is competing as a team today under Russia or a fake paeudoname... Not in tennis, soccer, basketball, vball... Just the individuals. But if Czechs, Swedes and Finn's won't play their own players that are in khl... I don't see them lining up against them either.

I'll bet you a shiny loonie the Russian players play under another name.
