I am thinking since this is a NHL event, there will be some kind of Russian team. The NHL is not banning Russian players from playing in their league, so why would they ban Russian players from playing in their World Cup event?

Because they're banned from international competitions already, the NHL is hosting dialogue with the IIHF for this tournament which is who banned the Russians, and the Swedish and Finnish hockey federations would pull out of any competition involving Russia as it currently stands (due to their countries being threatened by the Russian government for joining NATO)

You know the NHL is going to float a 1001 trial balloons over the course of the next year to test viability of ignoring international bans and getting NHL Russian players in a WCoH. My guess is it will be a gimmicky team not called Team Russia, but something else. At which I point I'll boycott the tournament just like I did for the 2016 gimmicks. provided of course the current situation is still playing out in 2024. We shall see.
I won't watch that either if this happens.

Can the NHL be this stupid? sadly, they probably can be.

because maybe the Finnish and Swedish Ice Hockey Federations will say if the Russians are in - you can count us out. Which is an understandable and reasonable position for them to take since they are subject to daily nuclear sabre rattling from the country in question.

yes, they can be. most definitely.

Yes I expect it to be floated out increasingly. Of the three options - Russia plays, Russia is banned, Russians play on a proxy team - the proxy team is easily the worst to me.

I don't think the Czechs, Finn's or Swedes would go ... I'd be disapointed if we did.

With this news i wouldn't doubt the other countries back out if Russia is included.

There is finally a possibility of best on best international hockey for the first time in 10 years and people complain it's not the Olympics

If the SCFs were cancelled and all of the best players went to the WHCs next season all of you would be watching and posting about it. Nothing makes this different. Other than the fact that your grandma probably won't catch a highlight on the evening news.

Ideal world... WC2024, Olympics 2026, WC2028, Olympics 2030 etc. for tournaments going forward. Then the WHCs I suppose can become kind of like what the Nations League is for football.

Russia can stay banned for all I care. They aren't the only team in town. They'll eventually become unbanned I surmise, this war won't last forever nor the fallout from it.

Gimmick teams though would absolutely ruin this tournament, but I really doubt they will try that again after how badly it landed last time.

Because individual players don’t represent Russia when playing in the NHL. They represent themselves and their NHL teams. In an international tournament they explicitly represent Russia.

Now maybe we could see Russian players in a team Europe type scenario with players from other non-participating European countries. But as long as Russia is banned from international sports and the IIHF there will not be a team Russia at the WCOH (or a proxy team like OAR or ROC)

I'm surprised. The NHL actually made the smart decision and is holding the tournament in February and not in August. Timing is very important. Especially to the US market.

sure, nobody is complaining yet! But watch out...when a couple of players go on LTIR in the lead up to this thing, we'll see how quickly that changes to who was the idiot who decided on a in season tournament - September would have been better. I can't wait for that thread to be started up.

Because there shouldn't be a "Russia" team in any international sports. Having a "Russia" team would send a terrible message to the rest of the world. A PR disaster.

That's fair but, because there are so few teams that could win Gold, it hurts the tournament - yes, I know there are bigger issues than hockey at play.

The owners and general managers probably don’t like the timing but it is definitely better for the tournament’s popularity

In football, no one cares about the Olympics because the World Cup is the signature event.

There’s nothing particularly special about the Olympics when it comes to team sports.

Yeah, Olympics is special, also for team events. I haven't watched it much recently, but football at the Olympics has had some absolutely great moments through the years, and great players participating. Ronaldinho, Messi, Ronaldo, Xavi, Puyol, Eto'o, et al played in the Olympics. Cameroon winning in Australia had some great games, and upsets. Nigeria vs Argentina (96) was a great game. It's a totally different formula (U23) than the World Cup so it's not really a viable comparison.

Olympics is a different animal. Never mind some lazy people in a sofa with potato chips, but actually most everyone who actually competes in the events talks glowingly about it. I listened to an interview with William Karlsson (Vegas player) not long ago (in Swedish) and he said it outright that a World Cup isn't the same for him, and even brought up the economic angle from the "they're doing the tournament once in a while to make some money" perspective.

The original concept of this tournament, Canada Cup, was a way to monetize the elusive "best on best" during the cold war.

I'd love to see the NHL go the Olympics every 4 years. Then, occasionally, do a summer "Ryder Cup" style, North America vs Europe tournament.

As far as Russian participation and people saying they won't watch a tournament without them in it, people need to wrap their head around the fact that Putin's Russia is basically this generation's equivalent of Nazi Germany. They will be an international pariah until Putin is removed from power and his soldiers leave Ukraine. Are people really making the argument that while they may be bombing schools, hospitals, and apartment buildings leaving Russia out of tournament just screws up the seeding so let them play so Canada can have a legit rival?

Somehow, the hockey world must muddle on without them. And as far as Russian players not being complicite in the regime's war crimes, it doesn't help when players like Ovechkin and Malkin stand firmly with Putin through it all. Maybe let Panarin play and field a team of anti-Putin Russians? I think Kaprizov might also qualify if that's the case.

Ok rant over.

The NHL will find a way to include Russian NHL players.
