Latvia lost to Canada 2-1 in the last best on best quarterfinals, and was literally within an inch of taking a late lead. They also shut Canada out at the Worlds last year 2-0. There's no point having a World Cup if the world isn't playing. None of these players are amateurs, even if they're not all in the NHL.

I'd put it off until Russia can play - or until the NEW generation of Canadian talent comes of age - whichever comes first. ;)

Listen, you're making a whole lot of noise for a NT that hasn't won shit in 40 years. Let's just move on without them. They are not needed.

Just because you don't know their names doesn't make them amateurs. Just makes you ignorant.

You are right, because as we saw at the 2014 Olympics, Canada completely demolished Latvia with 2-1 in the quarterfinals. And that's when Latvia had their superstar AHL goaltender Kristers Gudlevskis and not the NHL sieve Elvis Merzlikins they have now.

Or that time Canada completely dominated Slovakia in the 2010 semifinals.



Yeah, **** that. No one wants to see Slovakia stuck in their own zone for an entire game.

Canada are just too good. Should just hand them the gold to be honest, so we don't have to waste our time watching.

Not sure if you realize but there's professional hockey players outside of NA. Whether they play in Germany, Switzerland, Sweden or Finland, those players are getting paid more than in AHL.

I hate the idea of a pool in Europe.. makes no sense. I understand a potential qualifying tournament in europe in the summer... that makes sense. Have it all in one spot... I dont care if that's Prague or Las Vegas but same conditions for everyone.

I actually think it should be in Vegas in February... not a bad flight for NHL players and the fans will fly there to see it. I'm sure a lot of people won't mind leaving Toronto in February to spend a week in vegas cheering on Connor and Sid!
 
I was listening to the NHL network on Sirius yesterday and they discussed the potential 2024 World Cup and what Daly has said regarding Russia. They basically had him saying that the NHL would not have Russia at the tournament if the IIHF still had Russia banned, but there was some thought toward a team that Russian NHLers could play for. Nothing confirmed by any stretch but the NHL is the NHL and can always make a bad situation worse.

They could allow willing Russian-born players to play for other national teams and waive the usual eligibility requirements for this tournament. Most would not take part, but at least they'd have the opportunity.

That would absolutely ruin the tournament. Which means that the NHL would probably give it strong consideration. There is mild precedent with things like Trottier playing for USA and Stastny playing for Canada in 1984, but that was a mistake, despite their citizenship, that would only be worse if you had random Russians popping up in other national teams. Let Russia play or ban Russia and consequently Russian players.

You know the NHL is going to float a 1001 trial balloons over the course of the next year to test viability of ignoring international bans and getting NHL Russian players in a WCoH. My guess is it will be a gimmicky team not called Team Russia, but something else. At which I point I'll boycott the tournament just like I did for the 2016 gimmicks. provided of course the current situation is still playing out in 2024. We shall see.
