The idea that McDavid could have lost to Canada in the Final is too dumb to contemplate.
Dunno how old you are but in Canada, the Earth stood still for the Canada Cup (which evolved into the World Cup) back when it started and allowed best on best to finally happen. It's only when NHL Olympic participation started in '98 that it lost its magic.
It beats not having him in the tournament at all though.
The earth stood still for Crosbys Golden Goal too. There was plenty of magic in the Olympics. And the 98 Olympics had far more prestige and importance among everyone I knew than the 96 World Cup.
I mean, I literally said the World Cup lost it's magic once NHL participation started in the Olympics in '98. We're saying the exact same thing.
Oh whoops, I misread that one.
He would have been there.
Lindros played in the 1991 Canada Cup before he even played a game in the NHL.
I love international hockey, but BEST v BEST international hockey is a whole other spectacle. It's truly a privilege to watch it when it occurs, be it Olympics or World Cup. I'll take a properly organized World Cup tournament over a boring all star weekend any day. Gonna be some of the wildest hockey ever.I think I might be the only person that’s absolutely jacked having this tournament, the last one was extremely fun, and the Olympics are still going to happen two years later, best on best hockey is the best f***ing hockey.
Hopefully . Summer tournament best on best BaybeeGuess this means no more NHL players in Olympics?
Next World Cup's gunna be in FebruaryHopefully . Summer tournament best on best Baybee
The infrequency of Canada Cup/World Cup killed the prestige of the tournament. Now that people got a taste of the Olympics with little to no World Cups for large span of time, people see greater prestige in an Olympic Gold and see the World Cup of more a gimmick. I don't know if they can build it up to that level ever again.Dunno how old you are but in Canada, the Earth stood still for the Canada Cup (which evolved into the World Cup) back when it started and allowed best on best to finally happen. And the 2026 Olympics are in the CBA already.Hopefully . Summer tournament best on best Baybee
Highly doubt Russia will participate. It would be a PR nightmare if they allow Russia while all other sports ban them.As long as there's no gimmick and it's a true best on best with Russia participating I'll be interested.
The way they build the prestige is by committing to it long term. That is the single thing that has killed international hockey in general. Nobody can count on anything happening....ever. Come up with a international calendar and f***ing stick to it. If there is going to be a World Cup every 4 years alternating on the Olympics, eventually it will gain more prestige, not immediately but it will happen. But if you have the tournament once a decade or so when you get the urge...yeah nobody is going to give a f***.The infrequency of Canada Cup/World Cup killed the prestige of the tournament. If the rosters are good and there are no gimmick teams, I’ll watch it.
I watched the 2004 World Cup and there were some epic games, like the OT semifinal where Jagr was beasting against Canada and Lecavalier scored the winner, and Finland making the final of a best on best tournament only to lose a relatively close game.
Whether it’s the Olympics or the World Cup doesn’t matter to me. It’s the rosters that count. If it takes place in February when the players are in prime shape, all the better.
In football, no one cares about the Olympics because the World Cup is the signature event.
There’s nothing particularly special about the Olympics when it comes to team sports.
I heard Zubrus and Kasparaitis are still serviceableYou realize the "Baltic countries all stars" is basically just Latvia, right? lol
Technically NHL can come up with some unofficial name like “Slavic Stars” or “Vodka drinkers”. Not sure if the players are obligated to participate and will agree to play under such team nameHighly doubt Russia will participate. It would be a PR nightmare if they allow Russia while all other sports ban them.
