World Cup of Hockey to Return (Feb 2024)

My understanding from earlier reporting is that the NHL does not want the players to play in future Olympics games (for obvious reasons) and the best way to get out of that would be to negotiate with the NHLPA to bring the World Cup back and allow the players to play for their home countries during the summer months rather than take a 2 week break in the middle of the season every 4 years for the winter games.
Olympic participation is in the CBA.

I wish there was a way to make the World Cup something that is 1) unique in format relative to Olympics/NHL playoffs and 2) a championship that players genuinely want to win. That said, I have no idea how to actually do it, the closest thing I have to a good idea is something like North America/Europe best of seven, although I doubt players would care about it much.

Best on best tournies are always fun. But this is a sham compared to the Olympics. A whole generation of great Hockey moments being stolen cause of Bettman incompetence.

The NHL has a pretty good argument actually. They're expected to shut down for a few weeks at their cost, risking injury to their highly paid stars, and the IOC collects all of the money. Dunno, I see their point. NHL participation was exciting to everyone after decades of North American amateurs against Soviet Block pros for the first Olympics they played in, then someone started asking "Hey, wait a minute..."

Is anyone from Finland, Sweden, Russia, Slovakia, Switzerland etc, going to wake up to watch this?

Why would they, most Canadian won't watch either. During the Olympics entire offices, schools, business stop to watch Hockey. It's pure magic like anywhere else around the world if ones country is creating memorable moments.

The nhl tournaments have no prestige. International play and who is the World's best country at Hockey can only be decided at the Olympics. Everything else is useless.

The Ioc is mad corrupt. But equally as corrupt is the nhl if not more and especially those idiot Americans running it.

Dunno how old you are but in Canada, the Earth stood still for the Canada Cup (which evolved into the World Cup) back when it started and allowed best on best to finally happen. It's only when NHL Olympic participation started in '98 that it lost its magic.

Team North America was an insult to hockey.

No more joke teams.

Last best on best was 2014. Gross.

Come on, live a little. That team was so fun to watch. They beat Sweden and Finland, and badly outplayed Russia. It was sad they didn't advance.

February tournament? Good to know that the shutting down mid-seasom excuse was a bunch of malarkey.

It's not shutting down in a vacuum. It's shutting down for no benefit to the league. Presumably in a World Cup, the NHL would make most of the money while lending their stars to the tournament.

2024 World Cup of Hockey should be 10 top division international teams but no special make up teams, if the Russians and the Bylorussians are still disqualified from participating in the World Cup then the #11 and #12 teams in the IIHF men’s world rankings would participate in the tournament.

I guess that's where the ratings are but it feels goofy to me for the NHL to make a tournament like this in the middle of the season when they run the thing.

Happy to have more hockey, assuming they also go to the Olympics. I just wish it was sooner, we were robbed of seeing McDavid and Crosby together in 2022, hopefully Crosby is still playing at an elite level then.

If there are 8 teams what should they be? Can Fin Usa Swe and propably Cze are locks ofc, but there's still spot for 3 teams maybe Switzerland Germany and Slovakia. Personally i think best would be 10 team tournament with Latvia and Denmark joining in. Russia ofc isnt allowed to participate and rightfully so that evil orc country should be banished for atleast 5-10 years from international hockey.

He will for sure. 36 years old no biggie for Sid

I mean if you ban Russia the tournament is a joke.

2026 Olympics is in Europe and the NHL sort of has to go to prevent a player revolt. These guys want to play for their country in Milan vs toil in the regular season its not China and will be fine for TV.

Finally, an international tournament that will be watchable! 8 years is too long without a best-on-best event.

As long as the World Cup is going on, the NHL doesn't need the Olympics. Just keep this every four years and show those IIHF losers how a real tournament works.

For me, World Cup = Olympics

As long as it's best on best, I don't care what you call it.

As a Canadian I would consider the top 3 international hockey moments:

1. Henderson goal.
2. Gretzky to Lemieux
3. Crosby Golden Goal

International hockey outside of the Olympics has been great and meaningful.

I also enjoy a best of 3 final moreso than a single game decider.

Let this stupid tournament die already.

There is absolutely nothing "World Cup" about it, and I highly doubt any of the players view this as something prestigious to win.

Even the argument that the NHL keeps the money from it seems minimally worthwhile considering the winning players from the previous tournament got something like only 75K each.

Give it up, NHL. This thing is a complete farce.
