I'll say one thing; I much prefer small ice hockey to big ice hockey. The myth that big ice creates more speed needs to die. All it creates is more room for teams to endlessly cycle and not get any effective shots from the perimeter. Its BORING.

i likes to watch this tournament every time i happen to remember its going on like this year!!but to compare to olympics is pretty funny..

i think the real statement is 'euro hockey tour better than olympics!'

Absolutely not. This tournament is nothing but a gimmick to be honest. The pools are obviously stacked in both Canada and USA's favour, and weaker hockey nations that have been trying hard to improve are given the shaft for no good reason. The worst are the gimmick teams, teams U23 NA and Europe. They throw any scant legitimacy of tournament right out the window. I mean just try raising them as topic with any casual hockey fan, and you get a raised eyebrow at best.

the rigged joke of a tourney which heavily favours the na teams and has a couple of rag-tag frankenstein teams in it is better than olympics? jeez, what a travesty

How does it heavily favour the teams that can't select U23s?

That alone makes a huge difference.

In what capacity? I enjoy the Olympics better.

World Cup is not more of a "best on best" tournament outside of creating Team Europe. Team North America really watered down team USA.

I enjoy watching teams like Switzerland, with excellent team play, push the big teams to their limits and sometimes upset them.

Stakes are bigger for the Olympics. An Olympic Gold means a lot more than a World Cup in the grand scheme of things too. A lot more prestige.

So let's assume NHL players don't go to the Olympics in 2018. Do you think the gold medal game of that event will have higher ratings than the gold medal series in this World Cup? People watched 2010 because it featured NHL players, not because it was the Olympics.

[mod] Almost everyone was watching cause it was the Olympics. NHL players help make it more legit but if it wasn't the Olympics it would be no where near that popular. You'll see with this tournament.

No nhl player's will kill how popular the Olympics are

No. The gimmick teams are awful and you can't say it's best against best for that reason. Eichel should be on Team USA, and McDavid should be on Team Canada. Germany and Slovakia should be the 7th and 8th entrants.

If the NHL doesn't send players to the Olympics, the Olympics should replace the WJC in that year. It should be U21 CHL players plus NCAA players of all ages.

McDavid would be a 13th forward best case scenario for Canada. Babcock isn't relying on a teenager for this tournament. I don't think Eichel is a lock for USA, and even if he was, wouldn't be a difference maker anyway.

In the US yes. Canada. No

With that logic IIHF WHCs are also best on best, because in theory it is always possible that none of the not available players would be picked or they wouldn't be difference makers anyway.

This is a worthless exhibition tournament without any national pride, created just to make money. Olympics >> WHC =WHJC > domestic leagues >>>>>>> "world cup"

I guarantee you if a European team wins this thing, all of a sudden it will no longer be nothing in that nation.

That would change the perception for sure. But as one very famous hockey person in CZ said, WC follows interest of private financial entity, OG is global thing. Despite IOC behaviour you still have Coubertin, olympic villages....Its uncomparable. WC is for fanatics.

On the other hand, small ice hockey on this level is almost just for experts sometimes. All the teams look quite similar minus mistakes....

Sadly all this quality doesn't help the sport at all, if the tournament is played out in a secluded corner inside the ivory tower of one of the most self-important leagues on the planet.

The finals are at 0200 on thursday/saturday and at 0100 on monday. I'm sure many people will watch this outside NA (with the exception of maybe game 2 for hardcore fans) :shakehead

Let me know when Europe starts scheduling events specifically for North America. I'll be waiting...

Because Canada and USA are in a group with the 2 worst teams in the tournament and practically guaranteed a SF spot? While 2 of Russia, Sweden, Finland, NA are going out in the group.
