Okay first two periods from Jiricek. Looks pretty good on the powerplay and has mostly done well making the simple plays. But he had a couple turnovers early where he didn’t move it quick enough and was on for 2 goals against in the second where I don’t think he was terrible but could’ve done a little better.
Drifted back too much on the first and then he didn’t have a good gap and the Swedish player was able to walk right in with speed and rip a shot past Jiricek and the Goalie.
Second one was at the end of a pp shift where a puck got flipped out and he was a little slow turning and getting back and the Swedish forward outraced him to the puck and scored on a breakaway. Jiricek looked pretty tired though and had just skated down and back right before this happened. So he might’ve just been too tired but if he’s at that point he should probably be getting off the ice.

My favourite part about him so far has been his movement and work on powerplay.
Still hasn’t faced a ton of pressure defensively or on the puck.

I didn't think the first one was great but not bad either. Could've been tighter but also still didn't give up a great look and that's an awful goal but by Vejelmka. I don't have an issue with the second because yeah he looked gassed and his teammate puts him in a bad position. Not a ton has gone on involving him

Ya I agree there. Wasn’t terrible on either. Has looked good on the pp but as you said not a whole lot has gone on. Kind of similar to the last game. I want to see him under some pressure with the puck and defensively.

Maybe some more offensive involvement too but he hasn’t gotten many opportunities to do that.

Czechia just got f***ed so hard. Should be a 4-3 game but Dahlin wiped out and took out the net so the goal doesn't count. Goals like that should count.

Separated a guy from the puck in the NZ on one shift and the next just missed a cross ice saucer pass from his blue line to a guy breaking into the zone at the other blue line. Definitely more involved in the 3rd

More involved in the 3rd. Still not a ton going on but he broke up a couple plays and made a couple passes.

All-around not a bad game. Gets a secondary assist on the pp.

I agree that he doesn’t necessarily need to be more physical, I’d like to see him play tighter D and end plays more whether that be with a good stick or using his body and running the guy out of space.
For sure, I assume he will learn some of that this year at Michigan and then really learn it in his rookie year up here, but most of the time elite skating defenseman dont use their body as often because they have the footwork to make other plays

As long as he isnt taking away from his transition game to do so

We also have to keep in mind that an 18 year old kid coming off knee-surgery who is not out of place at all among a whole lot of excellent professional hockey players in the WC is a clear plus in the scouting check-list.

Two games in, I agree David Jiricek has yet to set the world on fire. But he's certainly raised his stock with overall solid and competent play, along with the howitzer goal.

I've said before that Jiricek overtakes Kemell for the final top 5 slot in the consensus/McKenzie rankings, and I'm going to stick to it. I don't think he'll overtake Nemec at #4, but Nemec has been impressive in his own right and is a solid bet to overtake Cooley at #3.

I think when the smoke clears, the consensus will look like this:

1 Wright
2 Slafkovsky
3 Cooley/Nemec
4 Cooley/Nemec
5 Jiricek

Ya I’ve liked his showing so far too. I don’t think it will definitely have him overtake Kemell but I could see that happening. I’ll feel a bit safer with him if he plays like this over the next 6-8 games because even though he hasn’t been under that much pressure he has shown some nice composure in a couple situations and hasn’t looked out of place.

I still don’t love his skating and think there’s been a few situations where I’d like to see a little more escapability from him. I’ve yet to see him actually escape from the check of a forechecker and he’s had a few opportunities to do so and failed. Not a huge thing but it’s something really good defensemen do well.

Also want to see him get more involved offensively outside of the pp (1 on the pp as well). He only has 1 shot at 5v5 so far but he hasn’t gotten many opportunities to get involved offensively.

3 things I want to see him showcase over the next 6-8 games that I think could really help his stock:

1. Do well under pressure in the the dzone with and without the puck (hasn’t been put under much pressure yet but should see more as the competition improves)
2. More ozone involvement
3. Escapability

I agree with this. Whether it's injury related or not, I don't think that so far that Jiricek is doing enough to substantially move the needle and do what it takes to go second overall unless the devils are decided on taking a d-man.

I saw a flyers fan say that the team does not seem poised to take a defenseman, so I could see them take Kemell or Savoie and then Columbus jumps on Jiricek at 6 ,thus keeping their streak of like ten straight years of drafting only guys 6 feet or taller
