Why is the PK so bad?

Last year before he got injured Forbort was playing the best hockey of his career and
was very good on the PK. Z and Carlo have been horrific on the PK. Neither are taking literally the ice away and rotations were brutal last night. Identical goals with no one at
or near the post.

To me it looks like Hampus Lindholm is the worst of the D on the PK.

But none of them have looked good. Can't clear the zone or the crease.

Don't have Ullmark & good Swayman to save them.

It's interesting to compare last year's stats to this year's...

Our 'worst' PK'ers last year (by GA/60) were Lindholm, Coyle, Beecher and surprise Forbort. But, their numbers would be on the 'best' list this year, as they were all around 7.3 - 7.7.

The one guy who jumps off the page from last year is Heinen. He had almost 100 minutes on the PK and a GA/60 of 2.53 which led the team.

Another guy who maybe you wouldn't associate with PK'ing but has good numbers last year and this year (in limited minutes) is Lohrei. Peeke and Wotherspoon also had good numbers.

Swayman's SV is ,896 so that's not helping either.

I have a hard time believing a team's PK falls apart because it no longer has Danton Heinen on it but maybe DeBrusk's speed is a bigger issue. Speed from the forwards in general I think.

I know , I keep making the same assessment but it's true and even more important on PK .

I'd say Step 1 is figure out the personnel. Get guys off the PK who are struggling. At the very least, that means less Beecher and Hampus. Promote the guys who are doing well (Elias, Marchand, Zacha, maybe this is how Wotherspoon becomes a regular). Give Lohrei a shot at some PK time. Maybe that even helps improve his defensive play at ES.

Step 2 make the easy fixes, like clearing the puck when you have the chance. I've never seen so many failed clears. I wish more teams would lob pucks. You can't keep in a puck that's 20 feet over your head.

Step 3 is a tough one but your goalie has got to be your best penalty killer. Swayman is 73rd out 74 goalies in PK expected saves. That's horrendous. So, while it's kinda shitty to just say play better, he needs to play better.

Step 3b: The whole unit needs to play better. They choose not to engage guys in front so they can block shots and passes... ok, then block some freaking shots and seam passes. Carlo got beat twice on a goal last night, once in front and once behind. Get your sticks in passing lanes, get your bodies in shooting lanes... The habits suck right now. Play better!

Last step is the most important, to me. Their neutral zone D has been bad, so they're not stopping entries. Their stick and body position has been poor once in the zone, so opposing PPs have an opportunity to set up.

Sticks in lanes - and active sticks - is gigantic... that was a hallmark of the Julien/Cassidy defenses, and has fallen way off. So back door plays are open in a way they haven't been in past years. On the first "Unobstructed Views" cast, Bergy et al watched Lindholm get beat on a pass to the bumper that went just past his stick. Bergy's reaction: "he's got to stop that". (And that's not to mention Lindholm getting beat on an earlier PP goal that was a quickly developing 2-on-1 that he completely misplayed).

Lots of bad habits are the reason the PK is so bad.
