Once she realized the puck was in the net, she took her arm back down and signalled a goal with it. Why did she do that if her intention was to penalize Finland?
Perhaps on instinct alone. Again, unless they release an official explanation, we're all speculating. There's an explanation that fits the rule book (goalie interference, whether in the crease or out and preventing Rigsby from getting back in), or there's an explanation that fits what happened (tripping on Rigsby, while she had the puck in her glove, which led to a penalty on Rigsby and the play blown dead).

This should have been a defining moment for women’s hockey.

Instead, it just proves that the sport is still a 2 team hegemony.

Seemingly for eternity.

US/Canada always wins. I fear this was Finland’s 1 shot ala Sweden 2006

Ref raised her arm for penalty to Finland imo and suddenly, like previously someone said, signals a goal. She should have waived it as a no goal right away. And why she gave a penalty to US goalie is still a mystery to me;maybe a consolation prize which is just wrong and stupid

It would've been so good for women's hockey had Finland won this. Usually that kind of situations are good goals 2/3 of the time, but USA was quite deserving to win as well. They stayed in the game too and Finland couldn't score from some of the chances they had earlier. Tight games can go any way.

The talk would be a hell of a lot better for the sport had Finland be allowed their victory. Instead the women's game will now be associated with fraud and/or incompetence in the eyes of anyone who watched today's final.
Except, you know, it was probably the right call to deny the goal.

The whole thing comes off as a complete amateur production by the IIHF. Not to be taken seriously. An absolute travesty for the women's game.

US Goalie lunged to make contact. This would never be overturned in the NHL. It doesn't matter if the goalie has a foot in the crease. Goalie interference is when the goalie is in the crease while being touched. If not, this will open up all kinds of funny goalie behavior in the ongoing NHL playoffs. Keep yput feet on the crease and you can do anything...
It's a disgrace, it's a murder of justice, it's a cabinet call and the refs bank account should be monitored. It made total mockery of womens' hockey. Never has there been such a travesty in team sports finals in the world stage, except the Soviet basketball shenanigans way back.

Personally I'm on the verge of losing it totally. I've never had this big heartbreak in my life, not even on miscarriage.

The NHL is irrelevant here. This is not the NHL.

Reactions: Backyard Hockey
First of all. This team Finland is one of the greatest teams i ever seen, and that includes mens teams. The heart, drive and passion this team has is amazing. Congrats and thank you girls, you left everything out there tonight! Great group of rolemodels. They did deserve more than this, Team Finland 2019 is best womens hockey team in the world right now.

Second. This is second time when refs steals a world championship away from Finland. Minsk 2014 was the first when team Finland was ripped off by refs. And those crooked referees were rewarded with lucrative KHL contracts.

Impeach Rene Fasel.

I think the ringette penalty by Tapani was almost as memorable. Let's hope Teräväinen tries some kind of a flashy floorball move if he's ever in a similar situation. Would make about as much sense.

Is the video review done by the on ice refs in IIHF or is it done by a separate video review crew. Because if it’s former that’s a whole new level of incompetence.

After seeing video, no US player touches the puck after ref raises arm, Finland scores and ref points at the goal.

Thing is that the goalie kind of instigates contact with player while both are reaching for puck, and as the Finnish player hit the goalie outside of the crease then it should in my eyes be a good goal

I guess players know, but the wording of the rule is slightly ambiguous: "If an attacking skater makes contact with a goaltender in the goal crease during game action..." Could be interpreted two ways - one where the contact is made in the crease (both players in the crease), the other where contact is made with a goaltender who is in the crease. It is physically possible for a goaltender in the crease to be contacted by a player not in the crease (depending again on how "in the crease" is defined).

This from the IIHF appendix elaborating on goaltender interference:
"The goaltender is in the goal crease:
An attacking skater makes incidental contact with the goaltender at the time a goal is scored => The goal will not count, and the referee will assess the appropriate penalty to the attacking skater."
Doesn't specify that the contact has to occur in the crease.

Outside of today and Sweden at the 2006 olympics, that is as close as we have ever come to true parity in women’s hockey.

Alas, it feels like the gap instead of shrinking just widened.

It is as if these 2 teams truly will never lose gold.

Indeed. I don't see Finland being this strong in the upcoming years and be this capable of upsetting CAN or USA when its not Finland's home tournament. It was Finland's all time women's roster in this tournament and few of the older players are quitting now I'm sure. Plus the coaching staff succeeded very well, which won't always be the case.

If IIHF feels sorry about the situation at all and thinks the situation could've been handled better or more professionally with less confusion, they should reward Finland by getting another home tournament few years earlier than usual. I think it would be another 3 team tournament possibly if it happens inside the next 5 years. Else it will probably be just CAN & USA battling for the gold for a while now.

It's as if the IIHF got together and decided to come up with a way to destroy interest in the women's game for the next decade or so.

It was a close call and if anyone anywhere who made the final call had any clue, they would've let that goal be allowed for the sake of women's hockey. This championship/gold meant almost zero to USA.
