Shame to see Chinas mercenary team win. Atleast Japan can still win the group by winning vs Czech.

I wasn't surprised to see "China" win this game. The Czech's will be another tough match as they split their last two games at the 2021 worlds.

I wish China improved this much, but the reality is the actual Chinese players almost never see the ice. Instead, you hear names like Hannah, Jessica, Rachel, Rebekah, Kimberly, Camryn, Madison, Taylor, Leah, Anna, and Kassy on repeat. If it helps them grow the sport in China that would be great, otherwise it's a farce.

Sometimes, it takes a while for other countries to become competitive. In women's hockey, the USA and Canada have won medals all 6 times. The Finns have won three, the Swedes have won two and Switzerland 1 medal. Sweden won a silver. Obviously, those last 3 countries are all from Europe.

The Olympic movement could have just given the USA gold medals for basketball every time. But they actually play the games. The USA lost in Seoul in 1988 to the Soviet Union and in Athens in 2004 to Argentina and got robbed by crooked FIBA officials in Munich in 1972.

Spain won 2 silvers and a bronze in the last 4 Olympics to show that they are a basketball power. I remember one year when their starting five were 4 NBA players and the best player from their domestic league.

On the women's side, the Soviet Union won the first 2 gold medals in basketball and the Unified Team won one to make it 3 out of the first 5 for Russian based teams and 2 for the USA. Brazil, Australia, Yugoslavia, Bulgaria and France have won at least 2 medals each. Those are teams from 5 continents in women's basketball.
Well basketball is a bad example because sometimes Americans don't always come out with the best team. 2. Basketball is a world sport and much more balanced than women's ice hockey. So it's not a comparison at all. medals? At the women's Olympics, Canada and USA always play for gold. Eternal! The rest have to settle for bronze.

Basketball is easily less balanced than hockey. The women's Olympic tournament has nearly always been won by the US while the Soviet Union/Unified team has won it thrice (US boycotted the 1980 edition), with the US winning the past 7 times. Meanwhile, the men's tournament has been hosted since 1936 and the US has not won gold only 4 times which includes the boycotted 1980 games.

What do you mean? A country winning 15/18 gold medals over a nearly 100 year span is totally not lopsided :sarcasm:!! Any credibility they had is now lost.

People wanted softball cancelled for the same reason: "USA always wins!" Then Japan won the last 2 Olympic gold medal games. At least with women's hockey, no special surface is required. There's absolutely zero reason to cancel the sport.

Yes, the Olympic women's basketball tournament should also be abolished. ;)

Well, the last few decades have shown that this has not worked. the gap between NA and Europe continues to be huge. That will not change either. Therefore, the tournament is superfluous!

I would say the gap has gotten wider and will likely get wider with womens hockey being more recognized in North America. Some of these other teams have players that cannot even skate backwards :(

From what I'm seeing... the North Americans are miles ahead and that is true. But the sport is getting much better. Men's hockey is really a 5 team sport at best on best. This has never been like soccer.

However 3 to 8 seems very competitive now and Swedes are returning, Czechs are rising, Japan is getting very good while Finns can beat the big 2 sometimes with Russia and Swiss still holding their spots. I'm not sure if China sends all the imports to the regular womens worlds so can't say if they are improving or not (note: This is not some political shot at China, I just don't know enough about their program to have an opinion).

Japan vs Czech is going to be a barn burner. Loss means nothing in reality because they can beat us in regulation and avoid a North American beatdown. That will be one of the best games of the tourney IMO as a loss is almost like an elimination from the Olympics with all due respect to Swiss, Russia and Finns.

Yes that s the problem!

Canadian colors are red and white. Blue would be ok? I mean, to sell merch? You would be ok with going black with the flag for the event too then?
I don't care, my friend. They could wear Santa hats and it wouldn't matter to me.

Based on results, womens hockey shouldnt be Olympic sport. The gap is just to big. The problem isnt that Canada/USA always win. The problem is how they win. The sport is just not developed enough in many countries to be olympic.

Are you talking about the mens or womans teams...just asking?:naughty:
Both. :)

Every time there is an "event", people complain. In 2 weeks, we'll never see the jerseys, again.

At the end of the day, they are trying to do something original to sell merchandise.

Yesterday the quality of japanese players are actually pretty good, the only reason why china wins is because of the foreign players anyways.

Why are Canada and the US in the same group?

I have to say I agree with those wanting to remove the sport.

I watched Canada play Finland. Good Midget AAA level hockey team beating up on a house league team.

I watched China vs Japan. Unwatchable hockey. Just really boring. And whats up with the Canadian girl Hanna Miller...oh wait I mean Mi Li. I was under the impression that China doesn't allow dual citizenship...

MAYBE I'll watch the Canada/USA (semi?) Final. But I doubt it.

Nightly curling update...

John Morris is a S.O.B. but he's our S.O.B.

Canada had no business winning the match against the Czechs but they pulled it out - I'm not sure their final regulation shot should have counted and, based on their reaction, Team Canada wasn't sure either.

I can think of a half dozen players I would have chosen before Homan but you can't argue with winning.
Nightly curling update...

There is a reason why I did NOT(!!!!) want Homan...

I can think of a half dozen players I would have chosen before Homan...

2 easy shots for the win in the 8th and 9th end and Homan missed BOTH. Kaitlyn Lawes, who is already in the village, would NOT have missed either.

The defending champion, Canada, is out.

Likely Morris' last Olympics. He played well. Such a shame.

Prediction: 9-0 Italy loses in the semis.
