Agreed. In the world championships I skipped to watch the group stage because of this.

Switzerland finished 4th despite being the LOSERS of the tournament. They lost 4 straight games in the group stage and never lead once. Then they trailed Russia in the quarterfinals until 10 minutes left. They came back to win in OT vs Russia. And then Switzerland lost the semfinals and the bronze game by a landslide. So they lost 20 of 22 periods of play, but still was able to finish 4th. That did not sit well with me at all.

I´d rather have the games mean anything and get a few butcherings than have 90% of all group stage games being meaningless and just a waiting game for the knockout round.
The more I think about it.. I'm now souring a little about the format as well. Mostly becasue Tier 3 seems to be a lot tigher than it was (which I think was the point of the format so it is a success).

Tier 1 is Canada US
Tier 2 is Finland
Tier 3, to me, looks like Swiss, Russia, Czechs, Japan

I could be wrong but I think if they had a 4 nations tournament and those 4 countries played a round robin style format.. I think it'd be very 4 very close games and no blowouts. Maybe I'm wrong though.

Also, the Swedish ladies and Chinese ladies probably are not that far behind at all.. one is rebuilding and one is growing nicely!

So 2 pools with Canada and US on top of them would probably be more fair at this point as the game has improved in quality a lot. Which, again, is probably due to the original format.. now time to move on from it IMO. So yes, I've changed my opinion since Page 2 of this thread after reading everyones opinions. I'm just guessing at pools...

US - Finland - Swiss - Czechs- Denmark
Canada - Russia - Japan - Sweden - China

Given Pool A has already had a massive blowout - not sure it's even working anymore. I'm guessing a few more lopsided scores.

This isn't quite true. Switzerland led against ROC in their first game, consequently winning the first period of play. Additionally, they had a tie period in the group stage games against the US and Canada and also one in the quarterfinal game against ROC as well as in the bronze medal game against Finland. In the quarterfinal they won two out of 4 periods. Therefore, Switzerland lost 15 of 22 periods.

Very good post. I agree. I would say though that based on Czech Republics performance vs Finland in the the World Championships, I dont see Finland as a clear cut step above Russia, Switzerland and Czech Republic. I thought CZ deserved to win vs Finland in the quarterfinals. Also, Sweden has lost like 3 games straight vs Japan with 1 goal difference, so its close between them as well. USA and Canada are the two teams that are causing blowouts and thats something I dont think you can solve with any formating of the tournaments.

Thanks for the corrections, my memory was not entirely correct. But the main point was that they lost 6 games out 7 (tied one in regulation which they won in OT) and finished 4th despite that. It still does not resonate well with me at all.

I don't know if this is a rerun or something, but it's a game between Denmark and China on a channel here.

Why don't this teams play with exactly the same uniforms, when they want to have them this similiar anyways?

For Finnish, it isn't really useful to win Canada or USA in group stage, unless they with both. Or then all three end up in equal points with Finland on top.

With two "equal" preliminary groups like in the old days, winning one of them would mean easier opponent in the semifinal while USA and Canada would play against each other.

Is Canada that good or is Finland that bad? This has truly been a slaughter. 11-1 and the score flatters the Fins.

TSN/RBC did a spot on Sarah Nurse. She's pretty and (hopefully) a role model for people of colour in Canada to play hockey. The more the better!

Rachel Homan and John Morris lack the chemistry of Morris and Lawes from 4 years ago and it's reflected in the results. GO CANADA GO !!!!

Edit :

Sweden played amazing - they did not make a mistake until the 6th end. Our "Mean Girl" needs to step up and make up for 2018.

Japan went from scoring 1 goal and being super happy about it in 2014 to beating Sweden in 4 of their last 5 meetings. Safe to say no country has improved as much as Japan over the last 8 years. I'd love to see them challenge for the bronze.

yeah but japan men is not even top 20 in the world

Canada is more impressive than ever, IMO. Better depth, improved top end forwards and, I think the most marked improvement is the blueliners. Extremely smart, mobile and skilled group.

With that being said, the problem with women hockey remains the same: it's a two team competition. Whenever you watch the US or Canada play some other team, it never really feels like a worthwhile gauge.

How exactly is the team going to react and compete against the Americans is the bigger question.
