I had read here not too long ago that the top 5 this season would be game changers. Now, I read that none are.

Which is it? A star-ladden draft or a 2018 one?

I think you have to differentiate readiness with potential here.

They are not ready.
They have a good amount of potential.

Aside from the 2 young phenoms, will there be more ‘ready’ prospects in 2023?

Maybe it won't, doesn't change the fact that it's quite underwhelming this year.
Certainly seems that way but none of these players have hit their ceilings. We can’t get too caught up in the now.

Yep. Dvorsky is another phenom. Fantili is close to being a phenom.
Yager tried to get exceptional status at the same time as Bedard, nearly phenom.

That top 5 is special.

I've watched Bedard a lot, he's no 'phenom', not even close.

Bedard is no phenom? So who is a Phenom according to you?

McDavid, Crosby.. generational players. He hasn't stood out much this year, and its a watered down WHL right now he hasn't even been out west to play some of the better teams as its a very small sample size with covid this year.

Last year was watered down, not this year. Last year he destroyed the league at 15.
It’s also dangerous to play the comparison game here, the WHL is a lot stronger than the OHL and Q right now, it has 6-7 of the top 20 in 2023, and 2 of 3 Canadians in this year top 10.

I’m not sure what to say, the WJC team certainly recognize Bedard as a Phenom, as he’s the first 16 years old since…McDavid and Crosby.

And well, well certainly compare him to McDavid, the last one, who was probably a super-cycle player like Gretzky (I.e the best of a cycle of generational players), its a bit unfair. That being said, Bedard looks like a better scorer than McDavid by a lot at the same age. Ie. his stat like will be lower but he’ll have more goals. Ie. More Matthews.

Man, the W isn't good this year, I don't know what to tell you. The kid has a ton of talent, obviously, and worthy of the accolades. For me he isn't in the 'phenom' category not even close but that's just my opinion of the guy.

He’s not a supercycle phenom like McDavid, but he’s a phenom imo. First exceptional player in the W, agents have been after him since he was 10. I think you are too set on the assist-first phenoms we are used to get in Canada (vs. A goal scoring phenom). In that way he’s totally different than Gretzky, Lemieux, McDavid, and Crosby. It also means that he’s more dependent on having good playmakers with him than the others phenoms. My comparable for him is a precocious Sakic with a higher ceiling and a McDavid-ish X-factor (he’ll have incredible sequences like McDavid). Guy Lafleur might actually be the most relevant comparable.

That goal at the U18 last year after having been frustrated on the penalty shot was an example.

Bedard’s certainly a phenom. “Generational player” will be up for debate until we see his impact/production in the NHL but he is a phenom. Inferior players have been considered phenoms.

The more I watch Bedard the more I see a Brayden Point plus level player. Bedard lacks the size and elite skating ability of a McDavid. But who wouldn’t want another Point and his guaranteed 90 to 100 points a year?

Brayden Point with the finishing ability of Auston Matthews.

Dude is gonna be a generational player.
I dont think Point is in any way slighted by not being considered a generational talent as he continues to collect Stanley Cups.

I wonder what teams will be deliberately tanking next year? Obviously Arizona.

Hopefully us, but Ottawa looks like they want to be competitive, so don't see them tanking on purpose. Sanderson should help them.

Probably San Jose, Buffalo. My worry is Pittsburgh. Another f***ing generational talent shows up just as Crosby ages out.

Could see Boston in it, although not intentionally, but Marchand and Bergeron are aging.

Yeah, race for the bottom in 2023.

San Jose, Dallas, Columbus, Montreal, Chicago, Seattle, Arizona.

Bedard lacks the height right now but he's only 16 and has a Crosby type build. He's miles ahead of where Point was at the same age.
