Value of: Sam Bennett

Bennett's value would probably be pretty meager, considering how key a role he plays on a team gearing up for its title defense in a few months.

You could certainly find contenders willing to add him in exchange for good futures - a first rounder and a decent prospect, maybe. Yet do futures move the needle for the Panthers? They would ideally want to replace him with a comparable veteran playing a similar role, with similar size, snarl, grit and production in him. Contenders won't be offering that.

And neither will Florida.

If a contender has a player it can't sign under its payroll/budget, it keeps him for the playoff run and then looks to replace him in free agency. Teams in Florida's position don't prioritize asset management. If anything, they trade for more players they know they won't keep beyond June.

No way Florida trades him. They will do everything they can to get him re-signed.

If he does make it to free agency, there will be a long list of teams in on him. He lives in Toronto in the off-season so you would have to think the leafs would be the first team calling. He is a solid player.

I kind of get where you are coming from.

When I heard the Cap announcement, I thought of Bennett immediately. If he hits the open market, especially after another playoff run, I can absolutely see him being the guy who signs the "Holik deal" of this era. Not to say I expect Bennett to fall off or underdeliver his deal, but I can see him being the first universally-considered "very good, maybe all-star, but not superstar" guy to get what looks to us as superstar money.

That said, I just don't see it coming to that. Bennett will re-sign with Florida around Reinhart's # and will leave $ on the table. Sorry, I know you said not to do this.

If dealt, Bennett will return more than any other rental. Certainly a 1st, certainly a very good piece on top of it, and probably a decent amount more.

The teams willing to trade for Bennett as a rental won’t be able to offer what the Panthers need(I.e. a roster player). It would need to be a three team trade where the Panthers can fill another need, perhaps D.

Bennett to Team X
Dobson to FLA
Return for Bennett + to NYI

Just as an example. I think NYI would prefer roster players over picks for Dobson.

NYI isn't trading Dobson for anything less than an EP40 caliber player so that's moot

I'd pay to see him on the leafs just to see him sucker punch marchand or kucherov in the face

most time a player has made a dirty move for us its been on a fringe player rather than a star/key player.

Bennett big time dirty play to Marchand sealed the deal for that series. Marchand missed games, bennett played well

I'd offer up Nemec+ for an extended Bennett
Yeah no ones going to beat that offer.

I'd like him on the leafs but asset wise it won't work

While he’s not off-limits in a sense, he’s more valuable to keep for the playoff push than whatever a theoretical trade return would be. Even if they can’t resign him, moving him for a couple picks would likely not be worth it

This guy is my top target for the Canucks and we will have a ton of Cap space to fit him either as a UFA or trade target. We could start with Boeser and our 1st with an extension in place, add from there.

There’s probably only one other guy I can think of in the league who exists in the category of “will do absolutely anything to win“. Anything. Particularly anything dirty. And that’s Brad Marchand. Safe to say that actual contenders would probably back up as much of their down the road futures as they could to land that sort of snarly, competitive player, but since Florida is one of those teams, why would they bother to deal such a rare commodity?
