What I'll never understand...

Fans from all over the world keep telling us they don't care about the World Juniors but get mad when we celebrate our players / success.

I thought you didn't care?

Canada doesn't have a full allotment of players. Nobody does.

Are you talking about Lafreniere? The 4 players Canada cut weren't going to make final roster anyways. USA is missing 5+ players that would have been on final roster. Huge difference.

I thought you were walking away from this World Juniors?

He said that this would be the best Canadian team ever to have been entered in the World Junior Championships. You can parse that however you want. And to those who mock his title as the greatest Canadian hockey expert, then why is he paid by your premier sports network to be just that!
With all due respect, Craig Button is not the foremost expert on Canadian Hockey. Yes, he is connected to many programs and spends a hell of a lot of time watching Prospects.

However, I find Bob Mackenzie to be more balanced in his approach. Craig Button seems to be creating a persona for media as someone who will state absolutes & do so with a loud voice (I really noticed his volume go up over the playoffs & into the Draft this year).

As someone from another country I can see why you might have this opinion, based on his network role(s).

I find that Craig is knowledgeable about providing information on lesser known players, but I’m always wary when he gives such opinionated assessments. I find Chris Johnston much more balanced among the newer generation, now that Bob has stepped back into semi-retirement.

We should wait till everyone is out of self isolation and tested covid free for the 5th time, enters the bubble and joins their teams .. then cancel it. :sarcasm:

Welcome to Canadian fans life....every single other year. Whining isn't flattering. The teams are the teams, players miss out on the tournament for different reasons quite literally every year.

Can you provide a link? He predicted a Canadian gold and an undefeated record but I haven't seen that.

face it it’s a watered down tournament this year. Stinks.

I must say, being from Canada you rarely get to be a boogeyman on the world stage. It is funny/enjoyable that Canada is, and has long been, the boogeyman residing in the heads of various hockey fans around the world. I'm still waiting for the threads expressing shock and outrage that the referees all come from Canada this year.

Yea we get to be Yankees fans once a year

Watered down? You’ve got to be joking. Imagine the talent that would be in the NHL this year had it not been for the current situation. I can think of minimum of 5 Canadians and multiple players from the other nations. This will be one of the most talent rich tournaments of all time

Good point...the 2005 WJC had the most talent ever because with the NHL lockout a whole bunch of 18 and 19 year olds who would have been in the nhl played in the junior tournament instead. This year that factor is offset by players being cut because of Covid19, but there are still going to be a lot of great players in this tournament.

I thought you didn't care?

They are just stating the obvious. The closest to an exception to that rule is Finland. Finland is Europe's Canada, and they didn't have to import Canadian fans just to give the arenas a half-full look back in the 2016 WJC. Hockey is their national sport. But it is more of a similarity than a parallel. They don't come close to challenging Canada's national zeal for the WJC.

Here is the transcript of where I think you're getting that. Duthie references dream team types of scenarios, from what I assume would be a reference to the 3 prior times the NHL wasn't ongoing because of lockouts. This time it's because of covid. I guess that's where you're getting that from. Button doesn't say anything about it being one of the best ever.

Duthie: "Now Canada has iced 3 so called dreams over the year at the world juniors. They have 2 golds and a 4th place finish. That 2005 team that outscored opponents 41 to 7 is regarded as the greatest world junior team ever. Now, no Alexi Lafreniere but this is pretty close to a dream team scenario for Canada this year. Who ranks as Canada's chief rival for a 2nd straight gold Craig?"

Button "I think it's a repeat of last years gold medal game with Russia. Russia has an outstanding goaltender, defense is strong, and they can score up front, but make no mistake about it Canada's depth of talent is enormous. I think they go undefeated and win the gold"
