There’s some substance to small, slow and soft being a favorable matchup for 90% of the NHL’s stars in games that matter.

It's a weird quote though. Outside of the Panthers, who would enjoy playing against Fox in the playoffs? His team has beat most comers, and when they don't win he's still scoring (8 points in 7 vs the Devils, when he scored we won, probably not fun for them; and 5 in 7 against TBL).
And even against the Panthers he went 4 in 6 while being banged up so you'd have to assume they enjoyed playing against a bunch of other D more...

His play for Team USA is a whole separate issue.
Having to defend his play in previous Stanley Cup tournaments, with any reasoning, is a bit of a non-starter because he was good in all of them.
Opponents are scoring 1.84 goals per 60 minutes against Fox in the playoffs.
Like, we can talk about this year, that's a different story. Going back to say he's struggled in the playoffs feels very revisionist.
I'm not doubting that it was said to Demers, but it is something that he (or they) really should have expanded on. If the stats (both Fox's and the teams) seem to show that more often the not the Rangers come out on top, then where is this enjoyment coming from and why?
If you were to say "I enjoy playing against Fox in the playoffs because the Rangers have the puck a lot when he's on the ice, which means that I can't get hit and that's always nice" then it makes some sense, but then so would the follow up question of "but you don't really enjoy all the defending and chances against do you?" to which you'd have to assume the answer would be 'no'.

Does that mean anything? It's hard to say.
The US might beat Canada, or least stay close on the scoreboard with Canada, but this tournament showed that they're still nowhere near outplaying Canada.
With that said, the fact that Fox is playing as much as he is for this team, and is +11 at 5v5 in 43 playoff games is pretty good.

This may be a foreign concept for people who put a lot of weight into advanced stats and stats in general - and I’m not even saying it to be demeaning, I’m just about to point out what I feel is a truth based on all of my experience and all of the guys I have played with - there isn’t a SINGLE NHLer who knows what their “xGF%” against Adam Fox or even how many points they’ve put up against him or how many he has scored against them. When they say they like playing against him, they are basically saying that compared to most other D men they encounter, he doesn’t present nearly as much of a physical challenge to them and that he feels soft and slow relative to the rest of the competition. Now it’s true enough that a good offense and having the puck going the other way is an effective way of keeping it out of your net. It can also be true that guys would much rather see 23 when they’re going into the corner to get a puck than virtually any other player in a grueling playoff campaign.

And I complete get why some NHLers would prefer to not get hit hard in the corner but then have to skate 200 feet and defend, cardio f***ing sucks.

It's true that Fox's style is easier to play against in the playoffs for a forward. You're not getting punished consistently. That's why he needs a big, mobile defense partner who can clear the crease, which is what Demers said in that interview. He shouldn't be leading the defensive side of the pair. It's really not that controversial

If Chris Drury really wants to impress ne this deadline, he’ll use the copious amounts of cap space to act as a retention team for other deals. So he can recoup some of the draft picks he’s thrown away the last 3 years

Yeah, I understand that. It's an entirely different perspective.
All I'm saying is, with all due respect, the results are such that I am entirely unmoved by what they think.
I'm not trying to belittle the aspect of physicality and a grueling tournament, but at the end of the day, nothing matters but goals, and having more of them than the opposition.
I can perhaps accomplish that over the long-term by making the opposition think twice, or wearing them down, or hurting them, but if you're afraid, hurt, and tired and still better than me, then I'm not effective.

When has Drury done anything that is smart. JT Miller was a start in the sense that Chytil injury was always a concern. Rangers need to be a heavier skilled team that can skate and defend. Drury needs a lot of help and he has a lot of work to improve the defense. Maybe Housley is an issue. They have not learned that relying on stellar goaltending does nothing but becomes a letdown in the playoffs. Need to score and defend in the playoffs to win and not to rely on special teams.

I’m sure the Fox comment has to do with the fact that players don’t feel as banged up in a series where they play against Fox as compared to someone more physical.
I don't like the Rantanen idea, but if it is a road Drury wants to explore it shouldn't be a Panarin for Rantanen trade, it should be Panarin for other assets and a bid for Rantanen come July 1.
More risk, but If he doesn't sign then you move on

Panarin 50% retained for Hall+ (++++++) would work cap-wise. I'd do disgusting things to drag Nikishin away from Carolina. Colorado wanted to compete, we don't need roster assets for this season. Would instantly make Carolina Cup favorites imo. (And give us a legit top pairing guy to pair with Fox)
