WJC 20/21 should be cancelled

  • Xenforo Cloud will be upgrading us to version 2.3.5 on March 3rd at 12 AM GMT. This version has increased stability and fixes several bugs. We expect downtime for the duration of the update. The admin team will continue to work on existing issues, templates and upgrade all necessary available addons to minimize impact of this new version. Click Here for Updates
I am by no means an expert on the finances of the WJC’s, but what little I know is that each country pays for their players & staff to attend.

In return, revenue from the Tournament is divided up (I do not know the ratios) and each participating country is given a share to support their Hockey Development programs.

Yes, there is an entertainment factor here, but underneath it all, this is a very important fund raiser for Hockey internationally.

I think we all want the same thing, a good opportunity for these young athletes to perform on the world stage, while doing so as safely as possible.

I salute the efforts of all involved who are trying to make this happen. Again, not simply for our entertainment, but moreso to help fund the future.

All that said, f*** 2020

This World Juniors is going to be VERY expensive with very little money coming in. The countries should have come here on their own / on their own nickel.

Why would very little money be coming in? They make bank off TV rights.

Only canadians care about this tournament so they can win on covid walk over and brag about it forever.

Lets be honest here. Canada would play wjc even if the world ended tomorrow.

Obviously whatever country you’re from you care enough to comment
Ive seen 2 very bitter comments from 2 different posters and a quick look says theyre both swedes. Lol.

In fairness i do think it should be cancelled. Its not a great idea to be flying kids around the world to congregate in a huge group in ine spot right now. I would feel sorry for the kids losing the opportunity too though.

There should be no testing of the players. They are all healthy 18-20 year old 1% athletes. There’s no reason to think they are at any risk. I’d rather not further ruin this tournament for a few health bureaucrats to be satisfied that they ruined what would’ve ended up being the most satisfying hockey experience of many of these kids careers. Undoubtedly more will get added to the list without good reason.

1% athletes.

I've heard it all folks, I've heard it all.

You cant just reduce the WJC (and the exhibition games) to a purely economic event though, especially this year. The NHL has great interest in saving the tournament to scout the 2021 draft prospects (its hard enough to get decent viewings of these guys as it is this year) and develop the players they have already drafted. Especially Canadian and US players have had very limited competitive ice team this year, sometimes even none whatsoever. Unless a large portion of the players get infected the tournament is going to happen.

This is pretty accurate. If Canada doesn't win it this year it would be a massive upset. They have had the benefit of a massively long camp to play together and due to that camp they should have their entire roster. Many other countries are playing shorthanded. US is missing 6 players alone...and yes that matters. Its dumb to play this tournament right now. Plain dumb. Do I want this tournament to happen - absolutely but what we have now is watered down tournament in the middle of a pandemic. Pass.

When are you going to quit your whining? This tournament is important to others too, it's gotten big here in Finland, winning WJC's is a bigger accomplishment than winning a Skoda Cup. I get that you are upset about the COVID related cuts, but you can always win being undermanned on paper, wasn't long ago Team Finland consisting only Liiga players and a few from KHL won senior gold medal beating fully NHL stacked teams that Russia, Canada, Sweden had.

Well said. I was in the arena when Kapanen scored the OT winner and people were crying in happiness. I was hugged by strangers. It was amazing.

I remember watching that on TV at home screaming my lungs out when he scored that goal, biggest goal in Finnish hockey for me, that game will forever in history be one of the classics, the drama was INSANE.

I will quit my whining when Canada stops getting advantages as usual

According to the below link, only the host country and IIHF receive a share of the revenue. Does the IIHF then disburse a portion to each federation? I don't know. But they do use that money to fund lower level tournaments.
But, yeah, this tournament is carrying on not because of the NHL, or the fans; it's all about the almighty dollar.

When the tournament is held in Canada, 50 percent of the profits go to Hockey Canada and 35 percent to the CHL. The remaining 15 percent is split between the local organizing committee, the provincial amateur hockey association where the event is held and the International Ice Hockey Federation.
2021 World Juniors in Alberta could raise $38 million in tickets sales, and not a penny goes to the players
