I never said he is bad on offense, did I? All those points are nice and dandy, but this is the only argument in Hronek's favour in this discussion. Let's agree upon following, Hronek is a fine offensive defenseman, but he is not good in transition which is not the same for me. And yes I can understand why compared to Smith or Kindls of this world Hronek is actually a fine PMD, the question is, does it make him good not relative to those skilled gentlemen, but on absolute terms. I also disagree on Leddy, who due to his skating ability alone was a way better PMD than Hronek. I also think he had a higher panic treshold because he knew he could rely on his skating. On the current team (not including Seider, because doh...) I also think that Lindström is way better than Hronek at zone exits (QoC caveat) and Walman is better at both zone entries and exits.
Our fundamental disagreement, then, is certainly Hronek's transition game. I disagree that he is not good in transition. The other significant disagreement is on Leddy, at least relative to Hronek. Leddy's transition game was worse, and overall he was a downright trainwreck. And I say that as someone who was fine with the trade originally, thinking he was going to provide that top-4 level transition game. He did not. But I don't think Leddy wanted to be in Detroit to begin with, which undermined his upside here and also helped guarantee his trade to the Blues.

I agree...Leddy's body language and the way he gave interviews really was a polar opposite feeling to how Staal made lemonade out of lemons. I was very disappointed in how poorly Leddy turned out for us. Granted we got a solid return for him, but I was hoping that he could really cement the top 4, for us, going forward and be able to play top pair minutes with Seider starting next year.

Hronek's transition game, aside from his always going too deep in the offensive zone, is the best part of his game.

Well since we have a dedicated thread, maybe we should move the discussion there. As for transdition game, what part of it is a strength of his? Zone exits? Nope, he cannot execute precise under pressure usually trying to get rid of puck and mostly passing to a pressured forward who turns it over or creating turnover by himself. Skating away with the puck? Nope, his skating is not good enough to get away from foreckers. Skate through neutral zone? Zone entries? Also no, from perspecitve that is one of the reasons why he wasn't able to stick as PP QB, as he couldn't gain offensive zone and buy time for everybody to set up. So he can pass when he is not pressured? Great, but that's like less than what 30% of the plays? I think you can sum it up, as Hronek is not good at making quick decisions with the puck, which in my eyes not a good transition player.

Good juxtaposition to point out there, Leddy vs Staal. I still remember hearing that first Leddy interview (and then all the subsequent ones) and thinking, "boy I hope that's just his baseline demeanor, because otherwise he is super disappointed in this trade and does not want to be in Detroit." Now that his tenure has played out, I'd wager a hefty amout it was the latter. Staal meanwhile.... it's no wonder Detroit is interested in keeping him around. His play is only ok, but when a guy is all in like he appears to be, that rubs off on the team and has residual value to the rest of the organization.

On the bright side, to counter some of the doom and gloom of the gdt...Cross Hanas had himself another night. 2 assists and the OT winner. Up to 8th in WHL scoring and still leads his team. Zito also scored tonight, now at 41 pts in 48 games. If we can actually start hitting on some of these mid and late round picks things will start looking a whole lot better.

It sounds like you guys are rooting for it… enough

Everyones king Wallstedt, doesn’t even start for Lulea any more
To the contrary, I'm not rooting for it. I have been checking in eagerly for the past month hoping that he would flip the switch back to being good. It's just that more often than not, my internal reaction has been a direct reflection of the gif I posted. I've also noticed lately that in their gnashing of teeth during gdt's, some posters are calling for Cossa being brought in when Ned lets in his usual 5....so I thought a reality check was needed. If Cossa doesnt pan out, it would be a gigantic blow to the future of this franchise, because not only did they pass on a potentially superior goaltender, they traded up to do it. I'm hoping that he gets his shit together for the playoffs and can put this rough stretch in the rearview.

The Wings probably didn’t need to trade up for it either. With the teams at 15 to 23, the only one that needed a goalie in that range was Edmonton.

Just try not to worry so much about what an 18-19 year old goalie is doing on a game-by-game basis. It was always a pipedream that he'd be on some 2-3 year timeline to the NHL. And even if he dominated WHL, you just don't know. Look at Carter Hart's struggles.

As for Wallstedt.. his most recent development is being sent to the junior team and posting a .800 in a 5-0 loss.

Bednar continued his strong play this weekend with two games of 1 goal allowed in each, 48/50 saves total. Last 9 games: 94.2%, 1.78 GAA and a 9-1 record. Prior to that he was about a 90.4% for the season, now up to 91.3%.

Also I don't think there will be any room in GR with Cossa likely there, and Toledo may not be the best place for him either. What's interesting with Bednar is he was drafted out of Europe so I assume we have two more years of his rights even though he ended up playing in the Q. One option is he stays in the Q for an overage year.

Just realized Cossa is only 3 months younger than Bednar and with Bednar's recent improvement his save-% has passed Cossa's.

I've been watching Leddy in St. Louis, and he's back to being the Nick Leddy that people loved on NYI, or pretty close. Totally different level of effort there than in Detroit.

Why am I not surprised. I really wish he would have been more professional in his effort level. But that's water under the bridge, now.

Do goalies ever make good head coaches?
Weird.
Funny, because they probably have the best view of the ice - better than any other player.
They're all about playing a shell because it's all about cock blocking the other players, not about scoring. They're like the ugly friend that hangs out with hot chicks.
