I hope he stops drafting overages and try to evaluate better . It's not about Edvinsson, Raymond, Seider and Kasper it's about later picks where you need to get lucky. Other wise we never get Z or D

Lombardi and Mazur are definitely looking like shit, youre right

No they are not, Buchelnikov also looking promising. If you waiting for extra year and pick who ever progressing well, you will get prospect with higher floor, but not with higher sealing.

Yeah I was being sarcastic. Some of what looks like Yzermans best late round picks are overagers... why would you want him to stop drafting them?

Oh, so edgy.

3 on 3 summer hockey is where I determined that Elmer Soderblom was the real deal and Albin Grewe was not an NHLer.

Soderblom was finding ways to play with the waterbugs. Grewe couldn't keep up.
At the time, people said, "you can't judge Grewe on a tournament like this."

But I could. Easily. Grewe couldn't keep up with the play.

Nobody's asking you to keep up with Connor McDavid. They're asking you to keep up with prospects - many of whom are longshots to ever make the NHL. If you can't make that work, well that's a bad sign.

"My track record is impeccable in prospect analysis because I only acknowledge the ones I was right about."

Congrats on being right about how an agitator drafted in the middle rounds didn't have the skill to become an NHLer. It really is remarkable that you were able to figure that one....you and the majority of people should be proud.

Now please talk about how you are wrong about Dylan James' skating being poor.

I'm more amused by Simon "gangly and awkward" Edvinsson.

To have a chance to get guys like 40 &13 in late rounds , recognize someone before everyone else. I like gambling. Like Cossa vs. Wallstandt ., We only know in about 5 years who is better between 2

Hey guys, the coach of one or our prospects who sees him everyday and is a former NHL player said something good about him. He said he was really good at something that is really important in today's NHL.

That's usually cool.

A few questions with ~1/4 of the season left:

Is Berggren still a prospect?

Is Soderbloom still a prospect?

Who is more likely to get a contract, Antti Tuomisto or Robert Mastrosimone?

What second round NCAA pick is more likely to play in the system (GR or DET) in the 2024-2025 season: Dylan James or Shai Buium?

Who plays in DET first: Marco Kasper, Simon Edvinsson, or William Wallinder?

Who has the best chance to play in the NHL: Dimitri Buchnelnikov, Kirill Tyutyayav, Amadeus Lombardi?

Does the Alexandre Doucet signing signal the end for Pasquale Zito in the organization?

Thought these would be fun to hypothesize and look back on.

1. No, he has graduated to full time NHLer
2. Yes, he needs to stay full time on the 3rd line, thats when I feel he has graduated
3. Neither will get signed by us
4. Buium
5. Edvinsson, then Kasper, then Wallinder
6. Lombardi, then Buch, then Tyutyayev
7. No, he is gonna be an AHL. Dont see NHL potential. Zito who knows

Is Berggren still a prospect? YES

Is Soderbloom still a prospect? YES

Who is more likely to get a contract, Antti Tuomisto or Robert Mastrosimone? MASTRO, but neither

What second round NCAA pick is more likely to play in the system (GR or DET) in the 2024-2025 season: Dylan James or Shai Buium? JAMES, but more because I don't believe that Buium will improve his mobility enough to crack into the mix ahead of Seider, Walman, Edvinsson, Wallinder, Johansson

Who plays in DET first: Marco Kasper, Simon Edvinsson, or William Wallinder? EDVINSSON (this year) otherwise tie between Edvinsson and Kasper (next year)

Who has the best chance to play in the NHL: Dimitri Buchnelnikov, Kirill Tyutyayav, Amadeus Lombardi? LOMBARDI

Does the Alexandre Doucet signing signal the end for Pasquale Zito in the organization? NO, Zito has an element that few of our prospects bring and will be given a long runway to develop.

1: no, I use Calder elligibility for this personally and Berggren is at around double the games played cutoff now
2: by that same reasoning yes but barely, he's almost at the cutoff so this could change this year since all he needs is 5 more games
3: Mastrosimone, I think the Wings offer him a contract but as a Senior it will ultimately be up to him whether he signs it or goes elsewhere, Tuomisto I would be midly surprised if he got offered a contract at this point
4: the 2024-25 season? Buium, i'd say James if it was 2025-26 but he'll be a Junior in 2024-25 and unless he takes a huge jump next year i'd be surprised if he wasn't still in College
5: Edvinsson
6: Lombardi, Buchelnikov could easily end up being a KHL lifer if he ends up just being a fringe guy and Tyutyayev I still don't think ends up in the NHL at all at this point
7: I don't think it has any impact one way or another on that

1. Bergie - No, he's an NHLer.
2. Soda - Yes, but close, obviously.
3. Tuomisto, they'll sign him to see if he can replace Lindstrom. We saw the pics of Kronwall over there working with him a month ago.
4. Neither. James won't be far along enough to have any reason to leave college early. Buium probably never makes it.
5. Ed, this season.
6. Lombardi unless Toots blows the door off camp next fall.
7. Only as a correlation, not a causation.

Tuomisto is getting signed, especially with hronek traded. They likely like somewhat of what they see in him. Sort of cherry picked but he leads all defenseman 22 or under in points in liiga. I still think his skating isn’t good enough tho.

And buium is progressing nicely, no idea why people are apparently down on him.

Is Berggren still a prospect?
No.

Is Soderbloom still a prospect?
As of Mar 7, 2023, yes.

Who is more likely to get a contract, Antti Tuomisto or Robert Mastrosimone?
Neither. Tuomisto because he's not offered one (unless he's vastly improved his skating), Mastro because he doesn't want one.

What second round NCAA pick is more likely to play in the system (GR or DET) in the 2024-2025 season: Dylan James or Shai Buium?
Buium. James. James is the better prospect, but I expect him to remain in college for his junior year. Buium could appear in GR that season.

EDIT: James could sign after his junior year and sneak into some AHL games at the end of the season. Changing my answer.

Who plays in DET first: Marco Kasper, Simon Edvinsson, or William Wallinder?
Edvinsson.

Who has the best chance to play in the NHL: Dimitri Buchnelnikov, Kirill Tyutyayav, Amadeus Lombardi?
Lombardi.

Does the Alexandre Doucet signing signal the end for Pasquale Zito in the organization?
I'm guessing Zito doesn't get a contract by June. Not sure one guy has anything to do with the other though.

thanks for the responses, some things seem to have general consensus, Edvinsson further along than Kasper or Wallinder and Soderbloom/Berggren, and some things seem to be still uncertain or question marks, james v buium and Tuomisto/Mastro. Will be interesting to see how some of these play out.

Really interested in the Lombardi/Buch/Tyuts timelines. Currently Kirill the Thrill is at 1.5 ppg in the ECHL. He is #3 in ppg among all ECHL skaters with at least 30 GP.

Wouldn’t say that Edvinsson is further along than any of them, but he’s in a more convenient position. Really I think all 3 could play in the NHL today. It might not be best for development, but they would assimilate okay.

1. Berg is graduated.
2. Soda is half graduated, I fully expect him to be on the team next year.
3. Mastro is most likely to get a contract... probably from another team. Our winger depth in the NHL and in the pool is quite deep.
4. I'll say James just because Buium's skating is still really far from where it needs to be.
5. Spicy take: Kasper might have the easier time staying in the lineup. But Ed will in all probably be up next year so the answer is him.
6. Lombardi because he already has a contract.
7. It means nothing. Doucet is a free asset.

---
My question in return is:

Seeing that we only are really losing Berg from our pipeline to graduation, how do we feel about the state of the prospect pool?

Fine, because Berggren "graduating" doesn't really mean anything other than you personally don't list him in the prospect pool. But either way he's a 22 year old who is in his rookie season.

The prospect pool discussion is hollow because of arbitrary qualifications that are placed on it. Like Raymond isn't considered a prospect at ages 20, but Soderblom is, despite being older than Raymond. And Johansson is a prospect, but Seider isn't, even though Johansson is older. Just because a player is good, doesn't mean that they are less prospect, just that they are a better prospect. To me, considering someone is graduated means you consider most of their development curve completed.

Like I could say that the Sabres prospect pool is weak because it is led by only Matt Savoie. Pretending that they don't also have Owen Power, Jack Quinn, JJ Peterka, Dylan Cozens, Mattias Samuelsson, Peyton Krebs and Rasmus Dahlin at 22 and under. What do they really have to be concerned about? So is their prospect pool bad, or are they stacked to the brim in really young, high end NHL talent. Or can prospect pool and NHL roster have some overlap?

Isn't 100 NHL games a good metric? I think that is what is typically used. There may also be an age cutoff but I am not sure. 22 seems like a reasonable age since players are +4 years from their draft class.

Organizational depth (aka players in the AHL/Europe/etc) is different than players who are full time roster players. Because player development is non-linear, we tend not to care about age of players who have yet to make the NHL until it starts to indicate their development has plateaued and they are less likely to reach the NHL. Even the guys who wash out of our pool tend to be exceedingly good hockey players when compared against the rest of the world, but that doesn't indicate they were never more than prospects for the NHL team that drafted them.

To use your example, I would say that Buffalo's pipeline might be weakened but that their organizational depth is as strong as ever given all of the good young players they have. When talking about their to-be career NHL players, we are not pretending they do not have Dahlin, Power, Quinn, etc, we are acknowledging that those young players are bonafide NHLers and it no longer makes sense to talk about them as if they are to-be NHLers because they have proven as such. In our case, Soderblom is more of a prospect than Raymond because Raymond has proven he is an NHLer, while Soderblom has a bit more work to do yet. Soderblom is a guy who is on the knife's edge at this point in time between prospect and young NHLer, but it's clear that for this year management does not feel like he has fully elevated his game to where it needs to be.

In sum, I found your points interesting but not an answer to my question. I'm asking the board how they feel about the pool of players who have yet to "earn their keep" in the NHL not about all of the young depth we have on the big squad.

1. Not a prospect simply because I don't ever see him being sent down at this point.
2. Yes
3.Tuomisto. He is already playing professionally, would fill a greater need if he worked out thus they have an incentive to give him a longer runway. I would not, however, bet on either getting a contract. Thought I read Mastrosimone wanted to test free agency.
4. James simply because of position and playing style. I find it hilarious that everyone has suddenly slapped a sell-by date on Buium. This board is crazy fickle at times.
5. Edvinsson for sure. He is already over here and should get a look this season.
6. Lombardi. Tyutyayev is playing in the ECHL at 22. I am surprised you mentioned him.
7. Doucet wasn't signed to replace Zito any more than he was signed to replace Mastrosimone, Phillips, Stange or any other forward prospect.

I'm saying, man. Boomer looks good in both zones and consistently makes smart plays. I wouldn't say his skating is superb, but it's not lacking by any means. It's good enough that coupled with his on ice awareness, he can cover ground to make plays.

I was not thrilled when we picked him, but I'm far from discouraged when I see him play.

Speaking of prospects you barely get updates from:
  • Mastrosimone is a point per game player in the NCAA
  • Moore being half a point per game player in the NCAA as a defender
  • Gylander having a 2.35 GAA and a save percentage of .918%
  • Bednar is not even playing anymore, last game was from October 2022. Demoted to a third string goalie. Bit of a bust
  • Aucoin doing nothing in the NCAA, 2 points in 22 games
  • Draper with 1 point in 23 NCAA games (nepotism pick)
  • Bradley with 19 points in 30 NCAA games (it is almost criminal that there is no hype for him. A 7th round pick by the way)

Tough to get a read on Mastrosimone with Arizona State's independent schedule (same goes for Coyotes' prospect Josh Doan and Bemidji State transfer Lukas Sillinger).

Any word on how much interest is out there?

Can't help wondering why he left BU and where he would have fit with the Terriers (who finished first in Hockey East).
