Genuinely hate the CHL route. I know we’ve had a few guys develop into NHL’ers from that system, but there’s something about it I just don’t like.

Article about James.

"He's playing with confidence," UND coach Brad Berry said. "We all know he has NHL elite speed, right? At the end of the day, as a freshman coming in here, sometimes, it's a little overwhelming just getting acclimated to the game, knowing how much time you have when you have the puck on your tape. Sometimes, the game overwhelms a young guy a little bit, because it's so tight-checking in our league.

"But now he knows when to chip a puck. He knows when to hang onto a puck. Man, he's a threat off the rush going around defenders. Now he's starting to play with confidence."

I think it has been a pretty ho-hum season for him. You always hope they adjust quickly, but it is never a guarantee. I watched both of the CC games last week and thought he was chasing things a bit offensively, but had a good understanding of what he should be doing in the neutral and defensive zones Skating won't be an issue for him, but I do think he needs to get much stronger to be effective playing the way he does.

NoDak is down this year for sure, especially up front. That said, I personally would certainly give Cooper Moore a contract. He has come a long way for sure and his mobility really stands out. I don't think we will see a ton of offense, but his length and mobility still make him interesting. If Gaber is ready to leave, I would also offer him a contract.

The above story is from January 2022 so the numbers may have changed. Can't believe those bums at UND only have 23 roster players in the NHL.

The CHL sucks balls. OHL has been strait garbage for a while now and has been living off of its reputation from the 80s and 90s. Canadians as a culture are getting super, super soft and it is showing in their hockey. The Q is a total joke at this point and needs to seriously consider contraction. I wouldn't draft a kid from the OHL outside of the top two rounds. All of the good ones are off of the board early. Defense is those leagues is so f***ing bad.

As bad as the CHL is, Sweden and Finland are even worse. I hate European junior hockey more than I hate the CHL. The big ice and round rinks breed super soft players that cannot be trusted. You aren't skilled until you actually make skilled plays on small ice with an actual defensemen trying to knock your block off. Lacrosse on ice is extremely boring. And don't get me started on Hakan. What an overrated dork. He is living off of past accomplishments more than the OHL and can't do shit outside of the top of the first round. The Swedish circle jerks around here are painful to read. Thanks Ogee for nothing.

Don't get me started on the NCAA. Talk about coaching talent out of talentless fools. NCAA hockey is nothing more than a conveyer belt to the Coast for some snowflakes that don't want to grow up. I don't know why we encourage these kids to put off the real world like we do. What a disservice. Instead of "chasing the dream" they should be down at the Chrysler plant as soon as they walk out of high school. If they work real hard and pick up some extra shifts, they too could have an IROC in the driveway in a couple of years.

Slovenian and Slovakian junior hockey! Now that is where the real talent is. If it ain't "Sl" it is shit.

I'm trying to decide which is more humorous; that post meant as satire or an actual take:DD

Rabid, don't get me started on those malnourished midgets with giant foreheads running around the MHL. I don't know how you can abandon your duty to mother Russia while your comrades are dying face down in the shit in the Donbas. Makes racking up 12 points a weekend against Tolpar seem pretty insignificant to me. Selfish, selfish, selfish....

And if we are being honest, that Children of the Corn league out in Iowa isn't much better than the MHL. It really started going to shit after my Thunder Bay Flyers folded up the tents.

Are you suggesting we should start growing our hockey players on trees like SEC country grows football players?

Bro, if you want the REALLY good stuff I’ve got some bootleg footage of North Korean Death-To-The-West Junior Senior Hockey. I think they’ve got a chance at putting a few guys into the 1st this year.

NHL elite speed? WTF? He's got average speed for a guy you think of as good NHL prospect.
Watching that 3 on 3 tournament last summer - both James and Mazur just couldn't keep up with the other skaters.
James has shooter's hands though, I think.

Dylan James was not a good pick the moment it happened. You had Noah Warren who has extreme untapped potential with his size at a position of need and we passed on him for a guy we had a dozen of in our prospect pool. I get you Don’t only draft for need but that was a massive massive mistake and I said it the moment it happened

That's rather dissapointing to hear. I hope next time Yzerman will find a way to accomodate your opinion appropriately, otherwise we should start questioning his leadership and management capacities

I hope he stops drafting overages and try to evaluate better . It's not about Edvinsson, Raymond, Seider and Kasper it's about later picks where you need to get lucky. Other wise we never get Z or D

What defenseman was under .5 ppg in the CHL in their +1 season and became a top 4 guy? Can’t think of one. Kinda weird to still be pushing that.

There are plenty of cases where I wanted Detroit to draft someone else in round 2 and then that guy ended up being nothing either

John, John, John. No one around here thinks for a second that you have actually watched Dylan James play a minute of proper, competitive hockey. Your disdain for college hockey is well documented and we know you don't watch prospects and are too cheap to pay for the privilege. Now you are trying to tell me you are watching NCHC hockey? Why people feel compelled to comment on prospects that they don't actually watch, I will never understand. There are a ton of threads on this board to contribute to yet many cannot seem to resist the siren call of the prospects threads.

His skating is very sound technically. He has solid, athletic posture, good hip and ankle flexibility and range of motion and good strider recovery. I have zero issues with how he moves edge-to-edge and would never describe his feet as heavy or his top gear as slow or below average. Nothing about his skating gives me cause for concern at this stage and I expect that it will only get better as he gets stronger (a clear need). He may not make it as a prospect, but skating won't be the reason.

Thanks for playing.

Another instance of ball hockey extraordinaire moonlighting as an illegitimate skating coach. There’s not an opinion on skating that I trust less than MBH.

Especially when video is provided showing strong skating ability from James that he’s trying to refute.

I mean, Mazur and James are definitely no Adam Ernes when it comes to skating. It's a shame that they'll both just have to get carried by their linemates. :sarcasm:

F***ing seriously. What makes his "skating will be an issue for him" comment about James even funnier is all those years where most of his pet prospects were actually bad skaters and he used to push back and say they were good skaters. Svechnikov is probably the most recent, but there were others.

I couldn't scout a prospect's ability to skate if my life depended on it, but I trust my own eyes more than his. There's nothing wrong with liking weak skating players, but there's no need to push lies that poor skaters are actually good and good skaters are actually poor.

Oh, so edgy.

3 on 3 summer hockey is where I determined that Elmer Soderblom was the real deal and Albin Grewe was not an NHLer.

Soderblom was finding ways to play with the waterbugs. Grewe couldn't keep up.
At the time, people said, "you can't judge Grewe on a tournament like this."

But I could. Easily. Grewe couldn't keep up with the play.

Nobody's asking you to keep up with Connor McDavid. They're asking you to keep up with prospects - many of whom are longshots to ever make the NHL. If you can't make that work, well that's a bad sign.
