I don't think he had a chance on goals 1 or 3 as he couldn't see anything. I Missed goal 2. Number 4 was a little ugly maybe.

I only was able to catch about 5 mins of the game live, but watching the highlights. Those were some not so great goals.

1st goal: defense should’ve had the guy, nice shot.

2nd goal: looks like he was following the guy going around the net and gets caught with the pass. Bad read.

3rd goal: 6’8, no need to drop on that one

4th goal: Wacky goal, Cossa never makes an effort to cover it, but the defenseman should’ve had that pass coming from around out in front of the net.

Not too worried about this game, i’m excited too see how he does tomorrow.

I'm of the opinion that if your goalie made 30+ saves, the loss isn't on them.
Edmonton is without Guenther for the Memorial Cup, IIRC. That's a big blow. 13g 8a in 16 games, through the WHL finals.

The 3rd goal is one of his technical glitches that he needs to get better at. Staying big in goal and being aggressive. Still got plenty of years to work on that, though.

I really think people need to temper expectations with cossas timeline imo. I think he’s for sure 2 maybe even 3 years out from getting games with the big club barring unexpected injuries.
I've been saying this from the jump. His technical issues are going to keep him from being NHL ready for at least another 3 years. You just don't flip a switch with the kind of ingrained habits that he has. He could come up a year earlier...but that's a big stretch. We need to be thinking in terms of like Thatcher Demko, who is currently 26 and took over the net, for Vancouver, just the season before, when he was 24/25 I don't think it will take Cossa that long, IMO...but Demko was in a similar position to Cossa as one of the best goalies picked in his draft (picked just ahead of Nedejlkovic).

Such a weird game for Cossa, he actually made quite a few nice saves. The 1st goal was an unscreened wrist shot from top of the circle, not soft but very savable. 2nd goal was more on the defense. 3rd goal was a screen that he has to be able to see over/around. 4th goal was an ugly one to give up in a 3-3 game. Overall a pretty solid game from him.

Yeah it's extremely rare for goalie to make much impact before they're like 24-25. Even Vasielievsky, who is on track to being one of the all-time greats, didn't really become an NHL #1 until he was 23-ish.

That was the first game of his I got to watch. First off, it was weird trying to watch and evaluate a young goalie prospect. I have not done that much at all.

While he is the goalie prototype that I prefer (loved Ben Bishop), he looks to have some very serious flaws. My biggest complaint is he uses his athleticism TOO MUCH and is sliding all over the place, being too aggressive and just leaving the net wide open for a rebound or unexpected pass. Reminds me of Mrazek in that regard, which is why I was never a fan of his. Being in the net is a big factor in stopping the puck.

But, like I said, I have no feel for evaluating goalie prospects and don't know what they typically look like at this age. It sure looks like he needs to do a lot of progressing.

Even the best NHL goalies have their offnights. I would like to see how he responds in the next game though as one thing really good goalies do especially in the playoffs is forget that one night and redeem themselves in the next.

The current NHL playoffs are in fact remarkable for their 80's and early 90's like high scores with the Colorado Avalanche, Tampa Bay Lightning and Edmonton Oilers in particular routinely giving up or scoring up to 7 goals on each other on any given night during their respective playoff series.

Yeah that was nice to see. It looked like his own Dman blocked his pad and somehow kicked it in at the same time on the second goal. He kept his cool and shut the door after the third one.

I'm not a goalieologist, but not a great goal for Cossa to let in. Seems like a technique issue? He was in position, but his pad wasn't flush. Either way, he didn't really move, so it was like a confidently incorrect type moment.

Looking at the replay, it appears that Cossa is suffering from “junior defensitis”

That's part of it, and possibly part of why he held the edge on his left skate just a hair too long. He had his right pad flush and his skate on the post so he could push off if need be. His left skate he was keeping the edge down (which prevents the pad from being flush) for as long as he could (too long), because as soon as he drops the knee to make the pad flush he loses the ability to push off from that side until he regains his edge. He didn't commit to the puck carrier quick enough. I'm making the assumption that he consciously chose to hold that edge to maintain mobility rather than believing he's just slow. You don't get to his level being a slow goalie. So a bad decision rather than bad mechanics.
