WINDSOR
1 year would not be good to justify for the trade.

Understand the concern but Honestly 3 2nd round picks in return wouldn't produce a top notch 1st round NHL pick. Draft picks are only potential. Signing a 1st rnd NHL pick is talent we have not had here in a while. He wouldn't sign with Ottawa so feather in the cap for our team. Proven talent trumps chances of such. I understand your thoughts but you would have to trade more than 3 2nd round picks to get such a talent especially at trade deadline. Then they are only here a couple of months. If this season goes south you could still trade him for more than the picks than what would have been gained by not signing him.

I don't believe you can sign any of the 2017 U18 kids - they would be OA's this year and they cannot play in the "O" as an OA unless they have played at least 1 game before becoming an OA.

The 2017 U18 kids would be 2000 born so they would not be OAs yet. I believe you are correct though in terms of not signing OAs who have not played in the league (CHl) prior to their OA season.

A team can only protect 50 players including roster, and usually try to keep a few open spots for trade and acquisitions so the real number is more like 45-48.
Breakdown: 20 man roster is protected, all drafted players are protected the year they are drafted (15+/- less roster), 2nd year drafted players are protected (15+/- less roster), 1 or 2 conditions exist where 3rd year non-roster players rights are retained but for the most part they are not protected (unsigned - post Sept. 15 birth date)
u18 picks are usually not protected, but there are special cases.

So based on the info I have/could find here’s what we are looking at in terms of current/signed players, prospects and draft picks available. Definitely some bright spots but definitely some major concerns as well. Would signing a Brimmer replace a Purboo etc?

Lots of questions with the first one to likely be answered being the import situation. With Medina signed does Piiroinen return or does Windsor move on, keeping Incze and Medina then drafting two imports? I have a feeling outside of that there will be no moves until August, the rest of June will remain quiet barring any signings.

Appreciate all the work that went into compiling this list. Going though it makes it much easier to hone in on players you’d like to see sign here. Most are D-MEN..already committed in US. However signing the Russian kid might influence someone to show. Other than D-men..I like Cade Lemmer and Brimmer.

1 year would not be good to justify for the trade.
So we were better off to keep Dipietro if he's only a 1 and done? Geeze, I can only imagine the pissing and moaning on here if that happened. Who cares how many years this kid ends up playing in Windsor, its pretty standard in junior hockey that the better a player is, the less time you'll have him on your roster. I'd rather have a one and done player with 1st round nhl talent than a player who spends 4 years being a fourth line scrub in junior.

The DiPietro deal also secured the 2nd round picks to allow the Cuylle deal. The Russian is considered a North American skater so it is more likely he is here for 2 years. That’s basically 2-1st rounders for Dipietro & a few picks which is a great return.

Yes signing him before the draft was crucial as now he will drafted out of the OHL. Unless he makes his NHL club AHL won't be a option. Curious to know if a game must be played to actually complete the trade from Ottawa. Signed on paper and trade completion is 2 different things. Last year when Vilardi was sent back to Kingston on paper we never got back the conditional picks because he did not play a game.

Would want more from the deal.
However what is done is done.
Guess enjoy him for however short time he is here.

I believe AHL is still an option. If I'm not mistaken players are drafted based on the team/league they last played for, in this case Muskegon/USHL. The picks were conditional on him reporting to Windsor. Since he's signed I believe he's considered having reported.

The risk of him signing before the draft is losing both the picks and the player unless the conditions actually state playing a game.

I would hope the homework has been done and they have all the assurances he will be here otherwise it could be a costly mistake. Signing him now could be the assurance that Windsor and NHL teams were looking for, that he will be in NA instead of returning to Russia if he doesn't make the NHL out of camp. He's probably not pro ready just yet and the risk was likely him possibly going to Russia instead of the AHL.

We'll see how this plays out.

You’re correct. Him signing in Windsor doesn’t mean a thing. He could be in the A next year though it’s unlikely.

As per NHL agreement with the CHL. A player who "owes a contractual obligation" must be assigned to that team if he doesn't make the NHL teams roster. He has signed prior to being drafted so Windsor owns his rights exclusively outside of making a NHL roster. As far as "reporting to a team" OHL trade deals usually have the stipulation of playing to complete the trade. Just as Vilardi reported back to Kingston last season from LA however since he did not play in a game last season the conditional picks stayed with Kingston.

your link is correct, the only thing your missing is that they need to have played a game in the chl before the draft, which all those players you referenced did.

ive used this example in the past and will again. pat sieloff signed in windsor at 18 after the us ntdp season was done and before the draft, and he played in the ahl at 19 after a single season in the ohl

SPITS SIGN SIELOFF – Windsor Spitfires - May 28th

Sieloff was in the AHL after 1 year in the OHL
Patrick Sieloff at eliteprospects.com

Egor is eligible to play in the ahl next year just as sieloff was when he signed before he was drafted to calgary, despite signing before the draft. it has no barring on the chl/nhl agreement

Maybe it's my fatigue but I'm drawing a blank here - Egor came from USHL while Sieloff was USNDTP (Elite lists them as different leagues at the time). Would that make a difference?

they play in the exact same league, the USHL. there’s so special rules for usntdp.
he can make the ahl next year

I know they were in the same league this season, but it was listed as two different leagues when Sieloff played. That's why my confusion. Hopefully there's a stipulation in any deals with us and Ottawa that if he's straight to AHL, he's not considered "ours", if you will.

it’s listed as two different leagues because they play games outside of the ushl as well, but the chl agreement is only for the chl. that’s why anyone drafted outside of the chl is ahl eligible at 18.

if your signed before the draft it’s has no barring on the agreement because you’ve never been on a chl card or a registered Chl player.

the only other nationality that has a chl type of agreement is Sweden. Sweden players can come to the ahl at 18 if they are 1st round picks. if not they go back to sweden.

if your drafted from an american league outside of the chl your ahl at 18, doesn’t matter what league or team.

I read a article re: Sieloff where he broke his jaw 2013-2014 preseason game. played only 2 games that season. They could have sent him to Windsor for a overage season , see attachment but a overager can be sent to the AHL as per the agreement. So I am royally confused or has the agreement changed slightly since 2012? It clearly states played for OR is under a contractual obligation. It states in the article he was 20 at that point which clearly makes him eligible to be assigned to the AHL

As of 2016, the rule was still - if drafted out of the CHL, you're in the NHL or CHL until 20-years-old OR 3/4 seasons in CHL. I'm looking it up now and the Marner stuff caught my attention.

Egor would be considered a Windsor Spitfire right now, so he'll be drafted out of the CHL. In theory, that would mean he's not eligible for AHL until he's 20. Given his birthday is in January, I'd imagine this means he's not eligible for AHL until 2021-22.

Again, I could be wrong but trying to piece together the puzzles...

sorry, im confused a bit as to your confusion. your always chl eligible until your 20. mcdavid could have played an overage year last year in erie. he could have played in the ahl as well. he was eligible for three leagues

Marner has no baring on anything, he was carded with the knights at 16. Egor has yet to be carded in the chl

as mentioned, Egor committed to the team for next year, but he hasn’t played a game yet and has yet to be carded as a member of the team, he can’t be carded until sept.

nhl has him registered as from the USHL because that’s the last team that registered a card for him. he will be drafted out of the ushl for that reason. if the draft was in sept then it be a different story, but it’s not

we still own the picks until egor plays a game in the chl

I doubt it was in deal.
