You pay for both. By your logic, Brock Boeser would have gotten a bigger contract than McDavid.
Offcourse you pay for both , but if one player scores 20g 80 ass and the other 60g 40ass and otherwise is fairly equal. The goalscorer will get more money, if it is likely they continue on that same path.

All that plus all around play, value to the team.
That’s why Matthews earns the most, Marner 2nd and Nylander 3rd.

Historically, secondary assists are the only point type with an argument for a difference in value.

and of course at times the second assist is the main driver of the goal.
Matthews had one the other night.
Yes, sometimes it is. Sometimes, the most important play doesn't even get a point at all. Points are imperfect in general.
But at least the secondary assist stuff comes from somewhere. Diminishing primary assists isn't supported by anything.
